"Lord, teach us to pray,” asks the disciples. And so Jesus teaches them the words we have come to know as the Lord’s Prayer, the oldest standard prayer in the Christian faith. The words are and have been prayed by a bazillion followers of Jesus. Beginning this week, our Calvary children will be learning the Lord’s Prayer, and the adults will explore a different part of the prayer each week. Once a person learns the Lord’s Prayer, the words rarely leaves their memory. I have witnessed people with some form of dementia pray these words when they can remember nothing else. The words of the Lord’s Prayer are a touch point for people in the Christian faith. And yet, not many people stop to think about the words Jesus taught: their historical and current context, and what they tell us who God is. While many of us pray these words without much thought, the Lord’s Prayer is actually a dangerous and subversive prayer! You won’t want to miss the next several weeks, as we explore the words of the Lord’s Prayer together. See you on Sunday!
