Words for the Beginning | Your Good Sermon | Isaiah 58:12b | Rev. Amy Beth Coleman
#sermon #isaiah #advent
We preachers talk a lot about doing and serving - in the church and in the world. Part of our United Methodist Church membership vows include a question about service: "As a member of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness?” That is a lot to DO!
A frustration I hear among church folk is a not knowing how to serve; either they are not fully aware of the many options, or not familiar with their own gifts for ministry. I get that. Sometimes I wonder if more people might be willing serve if they knew more about the variety of ways they can be in ministry. Every single person is gifted with a set of skills, or talents. Those skills or talents may be unused, unformed, or unnoticed, because we aren’t always great at identifying these gifts or skills for ourselves. Worse, we may think that what we have to offer isn’t much or won’t matter. But everyone has experiences and a story unique to them. God uses all of it - our gifts and our story - to share God’s love and grace.
This Sunday we will talk about serving in the way that only YOU can serve. As Dr. Seuss said, "Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” There is a need, a spot to fill, a place for each of YOU, and only YOU can serve there.
This Sunday, with John the Baptizer, we learn about those spaces and places, and the good that is uniquely ours to do. You won’t want to miss hanging out with wild and woolly John the Baptizer on this third Sunday of Advent. Come and worship, you brood of vipers!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Amy Beth

#sermon #message #christmas There is a story that made the rounds on the internet a few years ago about Margaret Mead, an American anthropologist, speaker, and author. Margaret Mead was supposedly asked by a student what she thought was the earliest sign of a civilized society. There are many variations of the anecdote, but the general details are similar: To the student’s surprise, Mead replie...

#message #sermon Calvary Worship This Sunday is Christ The King Sunday, or as it is also known, Reign of Christ Sunday-pretty exciting, right? In fact, I find it interesting that we begin and end the Christian year with a focus on Jesus as King. It is a historic day in the Christian liturgical calendar that teaches us about the nature of the Kingdom of God, the purpose for the Incarnation - God...

#faith #colossians #gospelmessage #sermon We all have roots in some form or fashion: family roots, cultural roots, denominational roots, church roots, etc. Yet, as Christians, the most important root that we claim is that we are rooted in Jesus Christ. When we look at and examine ourselves as followers of Jesus, we should see the reflection of Christ and the promise that what holds us together ...

Open table? What about Paul’s admonition that whoever receives unworthily brings guilt upon him or herself? 1 Cor 11:27?
ConStaggered connection and then nothing. This is the third Sunday in a row that the virtual congragation has been cut off from their Calvary family. Andrea Baumann
Unable to see or hear anything?
How do I go about it when I walk up to the communion table though? I just started going to Methodist church and don’t wanna look stupid in front of service.
Hello @Kandiklover, thanks for the question. While every church might have a slightly different layout Methodist churches tend to help by providing a brief instruction beforehand. There is generally a line you stand in before standing before the altar. When it becomes your turn the server will offer the bread, which does not require a response beyond taking the element and then a second server offers the juice where you will dip the bread in the cup and then consume the elements. Most Methodist churches are happy to answer questions and are happy to assist first timers. Our communion services are often recorded. If you follow this video link you can see an example of how people at our church walk up to the communion table. ua-cam.com/users/liveN1WlWuP3SN0?si=9SLSh3WrmUv6mqD8&t=2928 . Hope this helps!
Hello all, we apologize for the issues with the livestream. Part of the service can be viewed here : ua-cam.com/users/live6wy_imvB3g0 or via facebook.com/CalvaryUMC22202/videos/494205086625618

I don’t see video, either

Thanks! We are excited for all the special music this Lent!
I thought that a house divided is a duplex. Just kidding.
Are Methodists memorialists?
Most Methodist, UMC included are not memorialists. The UMC holds it as a sacrament, and while the understanding of the elements is not as strict as say the transubstantiation view of the Catholic Church, we believe that Christ is truly present in the sacramental elements. In the communion liturgy we state: "Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ." The transformation of the elements is seen as a Holy Mystery and while it is a remembrance of the Last Supper, United Methodists are not "memorialists" as we do not see the elements as mere symbols.
Beautiful sermon! Thank you Pastor Jan!
Hope it inspires your spiritual life in 2024!

Yes Lord, You are the Potter!
Free grace is the only true gospel. OSAS is true. Jesus is Lord God Almighty clothed in unsinful humanity and He is the author of eternal life to all who trust Him alone for salvation. Jesus only offers eternal life. Jesus paid for all the sins of all the world at the cross (past, present, and future). That payment is put to your account when you have believed on Christ alone for salvation. *This means that saving repentance is realizing that you are a sinner deserving of God's just punishment in Hell and turn (repent) from whatever you trusted in before, if indeed you trusted in anything; to trusting in the person and finished work of Christ alone for salvation.*
Thank you for the uplifting reminder, God is good!
All the time!
