You remind me of sculptors that say that they don’t set out to make a certain thing, they just find what’s hidden in the wood and release it. Beautiful.
When you said there are no mistakes, just smaller bowls I laughed out loud and startled the dog 😂 Thank you again and again for taking us along and talking through your creative process as the art takes shape. Have a wonderful week!
There are no mistakes in papercrafting either, just opportunities for embellishment! 😊. Thank you Mike, and Wayne, for a beautiful piece. The grain on that platter is something to behold. I paused the video so that I could just keep on looking at it. I hope more apple wood enters your workshop at some time in the future.
A silk purse from a sows ear comes to mind, I love the foot on this piece, it’s like a built in stand. Absolutely beautiful figure on this piece. Well done Mike.
Glorious one Mike. One of the things I've learned from your videos is that you need to embrace the cracks, because they will not go away the deeper you cut.
What a lovely addition to a growing display of your artistry. The two apple wood pieces would bring grace any table. Yes, call this one "Rustic Elegance". Beautiful! ☺️
Hello, Mike. I have recently found your video's. Absolutely love all that you do. Nothing better then to watch you make your creations. I never get bored. I could sit all day and watch you. My partner found you first, I told him he needed to subscribe, which he did. Then I thought I had better also. So here we are. Thank you so much. Wood can be made into such wonderful items, and the smell of wood is wonderful. Xx
You’re so easy going w/ the wood, but also perfectly logical and wise in your choices. I love it. I’m finding for the first time to not only see grain as beautiful but also to see it as an indication of how it came to be and what means moving forward. Thanks again!
Great looking piece Mike, was glad you turned it the opposite orientation to the previous piece, you've ended up with a fine pair 🤭 of apple bowls that is😁 Kind regards From Will 👍😊
@@MikeHolton thank you for replying I am new to all this and learning so much from you when you are working with wood love all the descriptions that you give
What dreamy wood and a spectacular example of two pieces from the same log showing how the heart and the sap wood dictate the appearance. Always a difficult choice “which way up?” Heart v Sap - Cracks and shakes - Worm and punky You have such an expert and natural approach offering us pleasing and sympathetic forms showing the wood off in all its beauty. Thanks again
Was having trouble falling back to sleep this early morning and started watching you go to work describing your uncertainty and such, feeling your way slowly and methodically thru the process. After about 80% of the video my eyes got heavy so I paused it. I didn’t expect this but I stared dreaming I was a wood turner and I had this excited feeling as I told my mom (now passed) how this stump piece of crab apple that I found was going to have so many heart wood colorations and marbling, comparing yours to it with its one main branch. But my material had over 20 branches radiating out of a center trunk. Quite a fun dream! When I awoke I continued watching your video for a bit more. . .paused it. . .and then just finished it up. What a marvelous way to start a day! You are an amazingly talented craftsman and an equally outstanding film maker, very entertaining, informative, humble, and your shtick of “ shave, and a haircut two bits” when you clean up the dust brought a big smile. Looking forward to seeing others.
Thanks so much Jamie, that is a very strange dream, I have yet to have a turning dream lol. I had a subscriber mention that the shave and a hair cut... really made her smile so I can't bring myself to stop lol. Anyway, thanks again for watching, all the best, Mike 😀
I find it quite interesting listening to your thought processes as you walk us through your creation. The platter looks like the perfect display piece for tea biscuits and petit Fours. Apple and tea, please! As always, unique and lovely 😍 Cheers Mr. Mike
The apple twins. They are both unique. Both loveable in their own distinct ways and I would struggle to choose between them. The first one amazed me with its distinct dual colour grains so this stole the thunder of the second one. So if you had turned them in the opposite order I think this one would be the winner. But as with kids there is no room for favouritism. Most of all though I so enjoy your thought processes and the stories that you tell us through your journeys deep into the woods... Thanks Mike as ever for just an incredible year of wood turning... I think moving house was the tonic you really needed.
Thanks my friend, this new place is giving me so much freedom to relax and just enjoy turning, gone are the times when I spent most of my waking hours wondering where to put stuff lol 😀
Nature gives us so many beautiful and incredible things. Thank you for sharing you talent for being able to listen to the 🪵 to show us what it wanted to become!
It does have a lovely grain Mike, an apple wood floor would be gorgeous. This platter is gorgeous too, the shape of it's foot stand adds to its charm, the natural colour and just the right amount of sheen, nice one! 😀
I was having a not so great day, got home tired and feeling blah and then realised its Tuesday, and your video is up and suddenly the day is not so bad lol Awesome piece Mike. I do like the foot on this one, lovely shape and a beautiful piece of wood. Thanks Mike 😊
“The cracks are still there of course…of course they are.” 😅 Nice job Mike! “Elegant and rustic.” And yes, multiple uses, as you said. Beautiful! Joe CA
Like the idea for the foot to raise the platter from the table. The grain in the apple is spectacular. I have many smaller bowls that began life as larger bowls!!
You remind me of sculptors that say that they don’t set out to make a certain thing, they just find what’s hidden in the wood and release it. Beautiful.
Aw thanks 🙏
Yes!

And he does it again, beautiful 😊. It’s great to see two pieces from the same log, both unique but still share something, great stuff as always.
Thanks so much Jason 😀
Glorious one Mike. One of the things I've learned from your videos is that you need to embrace the cracks, because they will not go away the deeper you cut.
Haha indeed, a bit like my old face lol 😀
What a lovely addition to a growing display of your artistry. The two apple wood pieces would bring grace any table. Yes, call this one "Rustic Elegance". Beautiful! ☺️
Great idea for the name Cynthia, thanks 😁

Thanks Patricia, as a fellow tree hugger I think we can be friends 😀
Glad we didn’t have to wait too long for the other half to get turned. That heartwood pattern is beautiful!
It really is Louis, I could not stand the thought of it just sitting under my lathe for a few months 😀

Awesome! Thank you, wood is an amazing material 😀
It was rough going cutting into that end grain, but the end result was worth it. Well Done!
Thanks Jeramiah, my hands felt it the day after lol 😀
Great looking piece Mike, was glad you turned it the opposite orientation to the previous piece, you've ended up with a fine pair 🤭 of apple bowls that is😁

Thanks so much will, I just love the character of this wood 😀
Great work Mike, I'm always surprised how you manage to do something different in every video!
Thank you very much, I try never to repeat myself if possible 😁
Oh, it's turned out so beautifully!
Thanks Lisa 😀
Very nice! Loved how that turned out
Turned out ... I saw how you did that! 😂
Haha 😀
Thanks Peter 😀
Apple wood is such a beautiful wood I never knew how hard apple wood was until I started watching your videos ❤❤❤
Thanks Joyce, it is very hard, a lot of fruit woods are, olive is probably the hardest 😀

Mike, you've done it again. The two pieces from that apple log are Great. Beautiful finish, congratulations Mike
Thank you very much Dave 😀
Apple is truly a beautiful wood. The cracks drive me crazy but as you showed us, just keep working at it. Thanks
Thanks Ken, cracks are pretty usual with apple unfortunately 😀
I find it quite interesting listening to your thought processes as you walk us through your creation. The platter looks like the perfect display piece for tea biscuits and petit Fours. Apple and tea, please! As always, unique and lovely 😍 Cheers Mr. Mike
Thanks my friend, your idea for it's use are cool! 😀
Another masterpiece, Mike, and your enjoyment is contagious, my friend!!
Haha thanks David 😀
I did not know Apple was so hard. That turned down beautifully.
Thanks, it is pretty hard! 😀
What I find fascinating is the metamorphosis from a simple piece of wood to an amazing work of art. What talent you posses sir.
Thank you very much! 😀
Again, I love apple. So much great color and movement in the grain. Love this bowl.
Thanks so much Douw, really enjoyed this one 😀

That flared base gives it extra character and the grain pattern is beautiful. Glad that flying bark didn't cause any trouble, too.
Thanks Barbara, me too lol 😆
Tricky end grain can be fun and aggravating. Great job as always!
It sure is, the start of this was really quite hard! 😀
