  • Today I'm taking the train from Wroclaw to Poznan. It's a nice train ride of only about 1 hour and 45 minutes. I've rented an apartment for 1 night close to the Old Town center. Close to the train station I caught a tram to the center of town. There were some very new and modern buildings here. The trams themselves also looked very new. I got off near the Old Town center and discovered an open air market. From there I walked to the main square, admired some architecture and talked with a young guy. I also stopped at a coffee shop. Next it's time to check in and explore the center of Poznan.

I lived in Poznan for 1,5 year and also loved it. But I definitely have to say that Poznan's suburbs I liked more than some Poznan's streets that are inside. There are highly attractive places for living, not just cleaned but modernized. Green, good-looking outskirts is the thing that I was surprised of as I moved off Russia.

I am sure that in your country there are places that need renovation and are neglected. Poland has made extraordinary progress in building infrastructure over the last 30 years. There is still much to do. Despite its imperfections, Poland is a cleaner country than the USA.

Poland, of course, has its shortcomings, but they are systematically eliminated as far as possible. Not only port cities in Poland are clean and well-kept. Most Polish cities, large, small and villages are clean. I remember Poland as gray and very neglected. These were the times when Moscow had influence on Poland. There are many delays due to archaeological work. What we have in Poland is that when some people start digging somewhere they find some old walls, things or debris or bombs from WW2. This always prolongs the construction work.

a bit of history about the city of Poznan
Poznań was one of the capital and religious centers of the Piast state (Polish Dynasty) in the 10th and 11th centuries, in the past it served as the seat of Polish rulers, and was also one of the most developed fortresses in Poland at that time. Poznań was also the capital of Poland in the years 1290-1296. It is one of the oldest chartered cities in Poland - it was granted city rights in 1253. The city had the right to actively participate in the act of electing the king. In the Poznań cathedral there is a symbolic tomb of the first rulers of Poland - Mieszko I and Bolesław I the Brave. On the island of Ostrów Tumski, there is the seat of the curia of the Archdiocese of Poznań - the oldest in Poland, and the second oldest university in Poland. The capital of Greater Poland was one of the royal cities of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. The meeting place of the election assemblies of the Poznań Voivodship from the 16th century to the first half of the 18th century. Shows of the nobility of the Poznań Voivodship of the First Republic took place near Poznań. In 2008, the complex of the oldest districts of the city was declared a monument of history.

@@TravelAddictGuy station is right. Just "Poznań Główny" means two different (or even 3) buildings :) You get to Poznań Główny, but to entrance named Dworzec Zachodni (google will translate like: West Station - the smallest in that area). Take a look on map, Poznań Główny is just really big station :) Some years ago there was also "Dworzec Letni" ("Summer Station"), which was in fact entrance to one platform ca 200 meters from main building ;) Nowadays main building of that station is connected with shopping mall and bus station. It is pretty huge, main entrance is from "Most Dworcowy" (street).
