One of our tours during the 2023 National Teacher Institute brought teachers to Fort McHenry where they had the cool opportunity of changing the flag atop the historic fort. In July, 2024, we'll be heading to New Orleans, so be on the look out for registration!
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

I got to help do this on a Fourth of July. We sent the big one back up. Visitors from EVERY country that were there pitched in to make sure Old Glory did not touch the ground.

Grew up ten minutes from there and in the 90's when I got out of the service, I was a volunteer at Fort McHenry. Got to help bring down the Garrison Flag on a couple of occasions. Neat experience. The actual Garrison Flag is way to big to fold up, so it's neatly placed in a flag bag.

The original flag made famous by Key has a Civil War connection. Col. Lewis Armistead of VA (best known for gaining the stone wall at Gettysburg only to be mortally wounded) is the connection. His father/grandfather (?) commanded Fort McHenry at the time of the British bombardment. When the flag still flew above the fort the next day, Armistead took it down and saved it for posterity. It remained in the Armistead family’s possession until the early 20th century when they presented it to the Smithsonian.

One of my favorite things I've seen at Fort McHenry was seeing the NPS Rangers help a WWII veteran fly his personal flag over the fort.

The flag here has 15 stripes and 15 stars thanks to Vermont and then my state of Kentucky joining the union. Congress then decided to stay at 13 stripes when future states joined the union.
