Jay: "I'd burn down the world for that little guy." Me: "This is gonna be awkward.." Meep: "ALL HAIL MEEP!!!" Jay: "ALL HAIL MEEP!!!" Me: "Oh right. It's Jay. Yeah, this tracks."
It's not in this edited reaction, but they do kind of address Jay's concern about UNIT acting like the Doctor got a new face - based on the reaction to 14 and thinking he's 10, UNIT seems to be trained to not talk to the Doctor about his future selves, which is a cool world-building detail
The Jay/Adam dynamic in it's simplest form: "What colour of starburst do you like the best? I like the pink ones 😊" "I don't like starbursts" "OK, cool"
I think the best compliment I can possibly give this special is that it feels nostalgic without feeling manipulatively nostalgic. David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Russel T Davis, Murray Gold, we're just back in it. And it doesn't feel like it's trying to "sell you back your childhood" like so many other franchises these days do. It feels real, it feels genuine, there's so much love put into it, it's a perfect blend of camp and silliness while still treating itself with its own sense of kinetic movement and urgency. It's just a good old fashioned fun time that we haven't seen out of Doctor Who in a long time.
I’m a transwoman who’s loved Doctor Who since I was a child in the 90s. Tom Baker was my first Doctor, watching vhs recordings at my grandparents house. This episode made me bawl my eyes out multiple times. Rose is such a wonderful character. The doctor and Donna were my favourite combo of new who, and this brought back all those feelings. It was incredible.
i didn't like the trans stuff thrown in the episode like some political gag, even though she did a great job in the episode. Nice actress, bad political mess.
@@FizzyWM No it's not, but the way they worded it wasn't the best. Basically, saying a male presenting Doctor can't understand the metacrisis thing properly, and because they were women they could "let it go" it's fine for the overall story mind you but the wording and phrasing was, again not the best. And now I'm seeing people pointing out the fact - how does an alien from another planet entirely know about pronouns on Earth (when Rose pointed out the Doctor using a he for the Meep) and the Meep said the obvious one that it chooses the definite article aka The Meep (which works obviously). It's nitpicky garbage but it is there and it is why so many people complain about things being "woke" these days that it's being forced down their throat. :|

I like the quantity of call-backs in this special: not only there are references to Donna's first adventure, The Runaway Bride (among them Nerys, Donna missing every alien invasion, and her saying she's "descending" the same way the Racnoss queen did), but the whole Meep storyline is taken from an old comic book adventure starring the fourth doctor. The fact that they pulled a reference so far back that the only people who will get it first probably have kids and a mortgage, astonishes me.

I desperately need you all to know that this was adapted from a comic from a Who comic in the 70s. And they ended up cutting out a scene where we see a flashback of the Meep's home planet. On the home planet, you see plenty of Meeps dancing around and singing wonderful songs and playing cute games...the topic of these? Murdering as many people as possible and causing loads of graphic destruction. I'm so sad they didn't have time for it because the scene is hilarious lmao

27:23 So you know, at least from what I've seen, Tenant's 14th Doctor is NOT going to being around until next year. Although, there is also a solo adventure with the 14th Doctor in the comics (The Liberation of the Daleks) which has already been released. The 14th Doctor is ONLY on-screen in these three specials. The last of which is being released on 12/9/2023. It is unknown right now if he will regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor at the end on the special on 12/9, but he probably will. The 2023 Christmas Special (The Church on Ruby Road) is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day and is slated to be Gatwa's first full outing as The Doctor. The 15th Doctor's first season is 8 episodes and is set to be released sometime in 2024. They started shooting his second season about a month ago. That will also be 8 episodes and is set to be released in 2025.
After watching years of you reacting to American programmes (and LOVING it) as a Brit it was awesome to see you react to a quintessentially British Show - my claim to fame-ish Tom Baker lived near our local supermarket and you could hear his laugh echo through the aisles, and the coat and scarf...his. Love this reaction and looking forward to your reaction to the future episodes. ❤
Meep was practically designed to sucker Jay and Adam with that soft fur and big kitty eyes. Moment Meep started talking, I told my kids "I dont trust it!"
Beep the Meep is sorta-kinda a recurring villain of the Doctor already, we were first introduced to The Most High, in a comic run in Doctor Who Weekly (the original title of Doctor Who Magazine) against the Fourth Doctor, and has appeared in the format a few times since. That first comic run was adapted by Big Finish (with Tom Baker) and adapted again in this very special 60th anniversary special. The Meep also appeared in a DWM special CD audio release, which came with an issue of Doctor Who Magazine (that time facing the Sixth Doctor). Meep Meep!
I already thought this episode was great, but it really does keep getting better with each re-watch. So many easter eggs, or just subtle details that you missed. Looking forward to the next two episodes!
In an interview with RTD, he said that the first special would have the feel of a classic style episode, almost self contained. We had a goofy alien and the spisode gave space for Doctor & Donna to reunite ready for the craziness of the next two episodes. Fantastic upgrades for TARDIS and Sonic Screwdriver. A great success ! As much as I wanted a three parter that was packed with cameos, I am very happy with Russell's instinct on Part 1.
Had so much fun watching you Guys react to this. I’ve been a Doctor Who fan since I was about 5 years old (I’m 57 now) and I was almost at the point of giving up on the show during Jodie Whitaker’s tenure (totally not her fault - I thought she was great, but really let down by the majority of the stories she was given), but this special has given me a reason to watch again - and enjoy it! Your reaction was easy, honest and a joy to watch! I’m duly subscribed, Gentlemen!
That was simply a delight! Very glad you're doing this. Seeing all your joy and hype, being a fan of the franchise, is just fun! I feel like we've all become so analytic about the media we love, similar in reactions, and this year we've had a few movies and now this, that remind us that it can simply be FUN. It was great to have watched the episode, already knowing about the Meep's true intentions, but having had all the same reactions about the adorable-ness. Only to see you go through the same xD
Unless I’m wrong, there’s supposed to be 3 specials with 14, and the 4th thing coming, the Christmas special later this month is Ncuti Gatwa’s first solo episode as 15.
I loved this so much, both the episode and your reaction. You’re totally right that modern Who has been missing so much, for the last few years. I’ve been a Whovian since childhood and seen adventures with every Doctor. But, there’s just so much special magic and camp that RTD brings to the show. There are so many people who work behind the scenes, who he’s also brought back too.👏😀🥲
I first started watching/loving Doctor Who about 10 years ago and I hadn’t watched it in a long time, but after finally seeing Good Omens I really fell back in love with rewatching episodes with David Tennant’s Doctor. This whole episode felt like a giant hug in so many ways and I can’t wait for the next two parts ❤❤ (I’ve also definitely been feverishly searching the house for my sonic screwdrivers lol)
I'm posting a second time....forgive me....but I just had to tell you guys how wonderful it was to see your amazing positive and fun reaction to this episode. I loved The Star Beast, and it was a shock when I started to view all these incredibly negative reviews elsewhere on the internet. Thing is, several of them weren't just negative, they were really hateful and vicious, not offering thoughtful critism, but just mean-spirited and (I have to say it) bigoted comments about "woke" this and "woke" that, and a flat out attack of Yasmin Finney. It was very sad to see the kind of hateful posts I saw from Doctor Who fans. If you don't like this episode, no problem, but that kind of bigoted hate? In Doctor Who fans? I was just so happy to find this review. Thankyou again!
A little over the top but, honestly, the queer community deserves some cheesiness every now and then. My only real critique is that I still don't fully understand the episode title. Was the Meep the Star Beast? That might be more on me than them. Edit: Thanks for the background!
Yes, the Meep is the Star Beast. the title is actually from the Meep's first appearance in Doctor Who Magazine in the 80s, a story called 'Doctor Who and the Star Beast', which this special partially adapts
That episode felt like a legit episode of Doctor Who! Sure, I liked Jodie and her Doctor, but..... it was too serious. It had too many serious topics and wasn´t just as fun as the old Doctor Who episodes...... but THIS.... Holy shit. You could tell that they had fun doing this episode.
I mean, Jodie's run had the same comedic/serious ratio as every other Doctor. Like, they've all had some whacky stuff. I can get some criticisms of Jodie's era, even if I don't agree with them, but she had pretty much the same story tone balance as every other NuWho Doctor. Plus, 13 was debatably the most generally upbeat Doctor, tied with 11.
@@ewanholme1687That's true. I didn't like Jodie's run at all but she was definitely very positive and optimistic, many times to the show's detriment even.
So cool that you two are doing Dr Who... This episode was awesome, the best of Tennant's excitable fun mixed with a bigger budget without losing the classic camp-ness of Dr Who
I think this right here is purest reaction to the *feel* of Doctor Who being back in every aspect. If anyone asks how the new RTD era is, I shall direct them here.
Absolutely love Doctor Who but never expected you to react to it, figured it was something you'd save to watch and enjoy in your own time, so it was an absolute joy to watch this, thank you so much guys, what a treat! I love watching you guys have fun with a reaction, and this was so lovely I watched it twice, cant wait for future DW reactions!
Jason means Healer or Physician. So Donna named her son Doctor. Then her daughter took the name Rose 🌹. Maybe TARDIS had something to do with that. RTD’s attention to detail is amazing.
I swear to Dog, I never read the comic book. But, I immediately saw through the Meep. Anything that cute and cuddly does not survive in space in the Whoniverse, unless they are the baddest bad-ass on the block.
As soon as the soldiers said (about Rose’s friend) “leave him, it is the Meep we seek”, I went to high alert - that didn’t line up with them being “monsters” like the Meep had told Rose, not in my book. Still, that twist was magnificent! The voice acting for the Meep was perfection. Love Miriam Margolyes, she’s brilliant.
So nice to see a positive reaction to this one! I have absolutely no problem with people disliking this episode and saying so but the majority of criticism I've seen towards it has been so clearly agenda-driven and so deeply cruel, it's put me off searching for any reactions at all. It doesn't even seem to be fans or regular viewers reacting anyway; just opportunists looking to get clicks from jumping on the latest fury-generating bandwagon. If I never have to read the word "woke" again it'll be too soon 🙄

@@darth_kal-eland then poor 12 had to deal with all the trauma from 11s time spent on Trensalor.
I believe they also had to cut down on the amount of VFX shots sadly
Okay I need to find this comic somewhere
Fraggles ❓
I absolutely yelled THANK
YOU JAY because I've been saying UNIT headquarters looks like avengers tower 😂
4:50 Being traumatised by Doctor Who as a child is a British rite of passage
“effortless kinetic fun” is such a spot-on description of that rtd energy i’ve been missing
I love when a reaction is done by people who KNOW the show. Your genuine reactions were exactly right. RTD you get an enthusiastic chef’s kiss for this episode. Off to watch it for a 3rd time…bye!
Learning that you guys are Whovians has made my day
Jay talking about feeling the need to be ready to fight off babysnatchers was the most relatable damn statement ever. My mind goes to babysnatchers, wolves, and other random threats 😂
Seeing you this happy makes me as happy as when watching the episode! :o) Thank you so much!
youre so right about this episide being effortlessly fun, i was grinning the whole time i was watching this special!
I'm just SO happy. My Doctors back and it feels like home.💙🤍💙🤍
The sheer joy of this reaction is everything. Can’t wait for the next episode!
Obviously intentional "accident" was obviously intentional.
And some of us think the TARDIS was "playing along" by adding all the sparks and flames.
Given how she was portrayed when she had a body, I am in that same exact camp as well.
SO glad to see Doctor Who on the channel!!! Please keep reacting past the specials into Ncuti’s run as 15!! ❤️❤️❤️
Meep Meep!
"I don't think I've been this happy in a long time" My feelings about the special exactly.
I am so so happy that you guys have reacted to this!!
I have VERY much missed not only Tennant and Tate, but RTD's writing as well. What a fantastic episode.
Donna has FIERCE mum energy.
“Binary… Binary… Binary.” Got me good 😭
I already thought this episode was great, but it really does keep getting better with each re-watch. So many easter eggs, or just subtle details that you missed. Looking forward to the next two episodes!
👿"Get Meeped!" 😆😆😆
DOCTOR WHO REACTS?!?!?!!! First jeopardy, now Doctor Who?!?!?!? See, this is why y’all will always be my favorites, MY HEARTS!!!!!
11:47 “You should be running”
Jay, her legs don’t work 🫢
I am so happy you finally posted this on the tubes!
WE'VE GOT THE MEEPS -Interdimensional Arbys-
Yay! So happy to have you guys reacting to this! 🎉💙💙🎉
I didn't realize how much I missed Murray Gold's music until this episode.
Adam summed it up well, it was just a fun time. :)
This is where the Allons-y begins!
I'm so happy you did this! Ahhh it's so exciting. Love your faces when the Meep revealed it's true colours. :D
My favorite boys reacting to my favorite show. Yippee!
I didn't think you'd do Doctor Who, might have to join the patreon to get the full reaction.
Solarpsychedelia is an awesome band name.
I thought the exact same thing! 😎✌🏻
Jay looks like he has a new dark patron 🤣❤️
This gives me such joy.
Russel has returned.
Glad to see you guys are covering the specials too. Hope you stick around for Nctui's era!
There are so many people who work behind the scenes, who he’s also brought back too.👏😀🥲
Those cybermen (capaldi era) were call backs to the OG cybermen from the 60s..
I LOVED this episode so much and you guys had the perfect reactions too! Can't wait to watch next week with you!
Arby's. We have The Meep.
Thirteen is my favorite Doctor guys.
Glad you guys are doing these on your main channel!
I first started watching/loving Doctor Who about 10 years ago and I hadn’t watched it in a long time, but after finally seeing Good Omens I really fell back in love with rewatching episodes with David Tennant’s Doctor. This whole episode felt like a giant hug in so many ways and I can’t wait for the next two parts ❤❤
(I’ve also definitely been feverishly searching the house for my sonic screwdrivers lol)
I would sell my soul for a Dr Who/Loki crossover.
If I remember right, that was part of the title of the comic where the Meep made its first appearance
@@SirAdamusGames Ah, ok- thanks for explaining. Never read the comics so that helps.
@@xavierkoide1644 Ah, thank you
@@AlexanderWandering It's named as such because it has the powers of the Psychedelic Sun that it uses to control people.
This episode was awesome, the best of Tennant's excitable fun mixed with a bigger budget without losing the classic camp-ness of Dr Who
This episode has Para-Demons/Mothmen, dark side Baby Yoda, War-chairs, Mordor in London…and 3 Doctors for T-time.
You have no idea my excitement level for this!! So happy you guys are doing this!!
THANK YOU. Jodie was great. She was LET DOWN.
Jason means Healer or Physician. So Donna named her son Doctor. Then her daughter took the name Rose 🌹. Maybe TARDIS had something to do with that. RTD’s attention to detail is amazing.
I've been waiting for this day for a long time!!! You guys are reacting to Doctor Who!!! Wooo Wooo Woo! Wooo Wooo
See: The Pting
So nice to see a positive reaction to this one! I have absolutely no problem with people disliking this episode and saying so but the majority of criticism I've seen towards it has been so clearly agenda-driven and so deeply cruel, it's put me off searching for any reactions at all. It doesn't even seem to be fans or regular viewers reacting anyway; just opportunists looking to get clicks from jumping on the latest fury-generating bandwagon. If I never have to read the word "woke" again it'll be too soon 🙄
I got the turn left reference
Love seeing Adam so happy, I felt the same exact way. Grinning like an idiot the entire time.
I loved this so much 💙 can’t wait for your reactions to the other episodes! 😁
... the beep of all the meeps t-shirts !!
