She thinks mock meats are good for the sake of making a vegan diet easier, especially with transitioning, but she doesn't ever say they are healthy. If you eat lots of healthy fats that's not really Barnard's diet. He always says no more than an oz of nuts/day (or half an avocado) or you WILL gain weight. There's no reason to believe that eating more healthy, whole fats is bad in any way and most people can't stick to such a low amount of fat. Which is why she made this video to begin with.

    One major reason to avoid higher fat diet is overall health and longevity. It is true that people can maintain healthy weight on high fat diet, but the biggest reason why Barnard advocates ultra-low fat diet is to mitigate risk of CAD or potentially even reverse it. Lipid profiles dramatically improve when people who are struggling with metabolic disorders get their total fat under 10-15%.

      Sorry, but veganism IS an extreme diet. Vegetarianism has been around at least a few hundred years, but NOT veganism. The term wasn't even invented until 1944. Only in people in rich societies with lots of food can even afford to attempt veganism. Poorer people have to eat whatever food is available or starve. Most people quit being vegan in a couple of months, and the ones who keep it up most often get seriously ill. The "you're not doing it right" excuse is BS.

Health organisations do recognise veganism can be done healthfully and do offer health benefits over omnivorous diets.
      Veganism may not be possible for everyone (for now), but most people in the west at least can healthfully go vegan.

      Being vegan is EASY if you embrace it well. Eat all the colours of the rainbow, healthy starches, legumes, nuts and seeds plenty of leafy green veg and a variety of fruit. Sorry enough UNBIASED SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE AND RESEARCH has been done, is still being done to prove this.
      For some people they have malabsorption of a variety of macronutrients and micronutrients due to symbiosis and leaky gut which can be caused by a list of things that then lead to other issues such as thyroid problems, muscle aches blah blah blah blah. But hey this can happen on any diet if you dont eat properly. Plenty of vegans eat too much processed crap!!!!! Not having proper sleep hygiene will lead to malabsorption so do some pharmaceutical drugs. So does lack of exercise too I'm afraid. So people need to SERIOUSLY look at their lifestyles and think about why they are the way they are. Blaming veganism for being a crappy diet is just false because it forms the psychological narrative to continue with the status quo to "justify" and "pacify " existing habits, rituals and the self centred aspects of our personalities.

      Was going to follow her but won’t now. I’m a physician, I’ve met Dr. Barnard and understand what he’s saying which she misrepresented quite a bit. It’s really hard to understand evidence based medical literature and how to juggle all the different info out there and determine which studies are good studies and which are not. We learn that as physicians and then we go on to specialize in what we choose to, in Bernard’s case that’s nutrition. People are on here talking about being an M.D. doesn’t make you an expert in nutrition and how little we learn in med school about nutrition. But dedicating your life and career to nutrition and doing the actual research (not just relying on other people’s research) is about as knowledgeable as you can get. Peer reviewed journals know how to differentiate good research from the bad. I find this video very disturbing. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion but it’s ludicrous for her to call what he says ludicrous and instead people should listen to her who has done NO front line research on nutrition and has not treated even one patient with diabetes/HTN/thyroid disease etc. and its effects on the human body in addition to actually treating patients for 40 years. It’s very arrogant but so typical of so many people in the my-lack-of-experience-is-equal-to-your-decades-of-experience world we now live in

It’s not just Barnard that is against keto, it’s a variety of doctors, but yes most I’ve heard are plant based doctors. They fat in the muscle issue has also been discussed by other doctors too, I believe they all associate the cause as being a by product of the standard American diet, too much fat of any kind, but they may single out meat on the occasion because in unhealthy American diets it can be the greatest source of fat, but not the only source.

      most of the studies are short term too. lasting only a few days or weeks.
      we dont need to be pro-low carb to see the bias in all this.
      to be fair enough, there are some studies that are pretty good, but theyre not actually low carb. they only look at what happens if you reduce carb intake. there was a recent well done study done by dr. ludwig and his buddies. the "low carb" group was not low carb. it was 20% carb. and they found some interesting stuff. ludwig however, is known for being a low carber. he probably did the study to prove his bias.

Your body doesn't count calories, its signaled by Leptin (a hormone) that recognizes fullness. You'll get plenty of nutrients on a whole foods (oil free) plant based diet than you would the Standard American Diet. There's a reason they call it SAD. Many Americans are nutrient deficient and calorically overloaded.

    I think what is mostly to thank Barnard on is his message on intramyocellural fat's importance on insulin resistance and diabetes. I'm not an expert but from what I understand it's somewhat the same thing as viscular fat which is also highly associated with metabolic syndrome. But you have a point that he can be seen as overplaying the importance of animal products behind it since foods like processed carbs (and alcohol) are highly associated with building visceral fat and even persons in the healthy range of weight can have insulin resistance if their intake of such calories is unusually high. I think saturated fat (high in many animal products) is also associated with building greater amount of visceral fat than healthy diet but I'm not sure if the causation on it is proven as well as with refined carbs and alcohol. Yes weight loss works on preventing insulin medication because the most harmful fat is also the fat that the body first burns away.
    But pff, like you, I'm not an expert either but just trying to make some kind of a picture on everything what is being said in the crossfire of all the experts and non-experts. Let's try stay healthy. Peace.

    High fat diets do not improve insulin sensitivity from what I can see. They improve the symptoms because you are eating low carb but they actually decrease insulin sensitivity. So you are confusing improving symptoms and improving insulin resistance aren't you?

    • @lilcrabbybabby
      @lilcrabbybabby 5 років тому

      Insulin resistance causes those symptoms though? So one could use them interchangeably?

    • @nicholasallen5030
      @nicholasallen5030 5 років тому +21

      @@lilcrabbybabby No the disease is insulin resistance which means insulin does not work to get glucose into the muscles as it should. If you have low blood glucose because you eat low carb diet and don't include foods that spike blood sugar then even though you have insulin resistance you won't have the symptoms (as soon as you eat carbs again you will though). Neal Bernard is claiming that insulin resistance is improved by a whole food plant based diet not just the symptoms. That is you can eat carbs and have no carb metabolism issues (so the disease is cured instead of managed). He takes into account other cofounding variables like weight loss which also improve insulin resistance (as UV did correctly point out in the video). So I think this is where Unnatural Vegan appears to be oversimplifying and misrepresenting the case (as Neal Bernard claims the disease is reversed after factoring out weight loss). And from what I've read about this high fat diets make the disease worse (i.e they decrease insulin sensitivity once you have factored out variables like weight loss). Which means that Neal Bernard is right AFAICS. However, I'm no expert on this issue. Neal Bernard is and has published studies and I expect he probably has a better understanding of the science than UV does...

      Correct. Just because someone lowers their blood sugar with a sugar-restricted diet does not mean their insulin sensitivity has increased.

      @Laszlo Vegh What you said does not conflict with anything I've said so no idea why you have to be so rude. Fasting is a good way to get rid of intra-myo-cellular-lipids in the muscles and it is true that if you do that you will improve your insulin resistance and probably be able to eat a much higher fat diet as a result without developing insulin resistance. Perhaps it is also possible to eat heavy fatty animal products and fast to avoid the negative health consequences. But my comment was not about fasting and most people do not practice that all the time. My comment was related to dietary choices and the fact the Neil Bernard shows that you can eat a whole food plant based diet to reverse insulin resistance without fasting.

    Great outro! ;P
    But on a serious note, what I miss in discussions of fats in diet, particularly when low-fat supporters discuss it, is the fact that we need to consume a decent amount of fat with each meal to ensure sufficient uptake of fat-soluble vitamins from our food. This is particularly important for children. Moreover, a diet overloaded with raw fiber, can, depending on your source of fiber, expose you to high levels of phytochemicals, such as phytic acid, polyphenols, tannins, oxalate and even cyanogenic glycosides. All of these strongly bind dietary minerals and micronutrients, inhibiting their uptake by the intestine. Moreover, cyanogenic glycosides are toxic, they drain your body's B12 reserves, and can lead to B12 deficiency and chronic histotoxic hypoxia, if consumed regularly over extended time.
    Having said that, some of these risky phytochemicals also occur in significant amounts in nuts, grains and legumes. However, their content can be reduced to uncritical levels by soaking, cooking, germination or fermenting. So, people, *Always soak your nuts !!!* (and grains and legumes and and and), and avoid raw fiber and cook it, if you can.

    High carb is only filling if you eat high fiber foods like broccoli, cabbage, lentils, etc. I made a soup yesterday with a can of beans and a bunch of vegetables with some egg whites. It was only 600 calories and I felt like my stomach was going to explode. I didn’t get hungry again for 9 hours. My total calorie intake is only about 1800 now and I’m burning about 2400. I used to eat 2800 until I cut out dairy and sweets. Cheese, ice cream, milk, cookies, pasta, sandwiches. All fattening foods that make you hungry 2 hours after you eat them.

But when you eat oil all the time it does affect the arteries yes it does yes it does. Even olive oil .You have to remember that oil is a processed food just like table sugar.
