I purchased one from my local Ace Hardware, well I've lost track of how long ago. Still runs great, I replace the air filter, fuel filter and spark plug every other season or so. I also bought the Shindawa/Echo speed feed head and really love it. It makes replacing the trimmer line like a two minute job. My Stihl dealer recommended that you wear hearing protection as well as eye protection when using it. Apparently, there are some sounds in the ultrasonic range that can damage your hearing with prolonged use. I think eye protection while running a trimmer is a given. The guard fell off mine at the end of last season and it appears to put it back on, you must pull the head. I just tried that, and since I don't have an impact driver, I'm going to have to take it to the repair shop. Its also needed the idle adjusted for some time.
My new Stihl is a FS-56 RC-EZ. It’s the easy start feature and was on sale, today, for $199.99? Mi put a half a tank on it this morning before I topped it off with Moto Mix. It is a lot lighter than my Husqvarna 28L which I have had for ten years. I just finished up trimming the yard, where I could not get with my lawn mower. It is my second Stihl trimmer. My first one was an FS-76 thaI bought in 1993. I used it for close to twenty years before I traded it off on a chainsaw. Never had a lick of problems with the FS-76. I use good fuel in all of my equipment. 45:1 Stihl Ultra withPNE gas plus stabilizer.

@@BrianPhillipsRC it was a good trimmer. The only thing, other than line, was a primer bulb. Don’t even think I replaced the spark plug. After 20 years, I removed the solid straight shaft and cleaned and lubricated it. I did, periodically, lubricate the head with grease. Didn’t use the Stihl tube of grease, just put the grease gun up against the hole and squirted grease into it, while spinning the cutter hub. I did it until I could not get it to accept any more grease, screwed the plug back in and it was good for another year. The grease in my grease gun is better than anything Stihl puts in a tube. I now have synthetic grease in my grease gun. Then, I was using Chevron with Moly EP2 grease, the same thing I used on my 25,000# tractor. The black stuff. Can’t find it anymore. That moly grease was slick.
I've been doing yard for 10 years personal lawn business and stopped by my local hardware store for a mower belt and got this weedeater and didn't expect much but I've been needing a new one I used to have a sthil fs 85 and the fs 56 rc don't feel much different the first thing i did after 10 minutes was switch out the crap trimmer line to sthil 105 it fit perfectly and is awsome to use it's actually more comfortable but not is powerful as my old one but it works I hope it will hold up
I switched out the line, and seems to be working better too.
I always wear safety glasses, when I do yard work because I don’t want anything hitting me in the eyes. So your all good and ready to go you are all set to do yard work. And I love that Stihl weed whacker, it’s just like mine. Still is the best brand and always will be.
Yep, I do the same with safety glasses...although I kinda stopped with one of my most dangerous tools, the chainsaw! I can't keep them from fogging up and found I was not able to see crap with them on...but I need to get a netting face shield so I don't get something shot in my eyes.
have this same trimmer. have an acre with spots that I cant mow and tons of trees. use the shoulder strap. I hate trimming, but this makes it easier. Stihl is excellent.
I need to give it a try...but I HATE trimming so much, that I've used this trimmer like 2 times a year - LOL - STILL WOULD BUY IT AGAIN IN A SECOND!!! Love it. Plenty of power, and EASY TO START!!! The angle is a bit strange, but it's manageable. I think the handle could be positioned better, but beyond that, GREAT TOOL!

Nice! I need to upgrade my blower too. I'm using a "green machine" - it's a $50 gas blower - LOL, $50, AKA it's FREE ;) What a POS, BUT it works. Some day soon, since I gotta keep the runway clear, I'll get a proper blower...

I have my own landscaping business and my weed whacker, is just like yours. I have one curved shaft and one straight shaft FS40C and FS56RC and I take very good care of them and make them well maintained.

I know what you mean about fighting a trimmer to get it going. My new FS-56 RC-E is a snap to start. Prime it a few times, put the choke on, and pull the starter, slowly. Off it goes. I let it warm up on high speed half throttle for a little bit before I blip it to idle.

I also have the FS56RC. I use an 80 tooth brush cutter on it for honeysuckle ... it's awesome !
We just ordered another three pack of chains yesterday! If I were not such a novice, I'd be able to use them longer, but I get into the dirt way too often, when trying to cut off stumps flush with the ground.
As the for the brush cutter, is that a fixture from Stihl?

You want the auto cut c-26-2 head it's the most important part on your Stihl trimmer! It's auto-feed feature or whatever they call it totally changes the game. If you need to re-string your trimmer it's done voila, instead of cutting two strings and winding them up separate. I use the 2022 fs-56-rc 9hrs a day for a living it's a bit heavier than the Fs-48 curve shaft I retired but eats everything in it's way even baby trees if you use heavy string. Thank you for the video and review.

Hope you enjoy it! I like it, but there is one detail that I noticed over time with it, and that's the angle of the cutter. If you find it to be a great fit, totally disregard my comment. I used to run a trimmer with a bend on the end, and this did make the unit a lot heavier and longer, but it helped with my ability to reach work in front of me, whereas this one seems to be a bit off on the angle of the cutter...it's not a HUGE issue, and furthermore, I really just wanted an ENGINE that will start EVERY TIME...and I have that. I've never struggles to start this, other than I still to this day have no clue what the heck all the buttons and knobs mean - LOL - it just starts! My previous one was a fight, EVER TIME, even after it had been running, it would be difficult to restart, at time...
Good luck, I think you'll love it, but DO CHECK the angle if you can, before you buy it. You might be taller or shorter, and this might not be a big enough issue to cause you, or anyone to pass on this trimmer, but wanted to throw it out, in case it helps.

@@BrianPhillipsRC straight shafts just need to hold your right arm up higher . Bent shafts we don’t really have to do that as much. Also, if you move the handle on the shaft down more that will help.

For sure. I thought about a DR trimmer, but when I saw how expensive, I just bought a used John Deere zero turn for about the same!!!!!
Keep an eye out for return items at lowes and home depot in the garden center. Majority of the time people spend more than they want and just take it back. Good discounts and you can talk to an associate for a few more bucks off

It does get in the way. Starts perfectly, every time, and I do it as infrequently as humanly possible...just mowed tonight, and was thinking how I really NEED to trim bad
And I’d prefer the straight shaft, over the curved shaft. But other than that I love Stihl no matter if it’s a curved shaft, or a straight shaft, I have both weed whackers, curved shaft, and a straight shaft. FS56RC, like yours and a FS40C.

Kidding aside....seriously- I strongly agree with the wife - you need to do some more landscaping on that hill and eliminate that weed eating up on that hill...You young now-but it only gets worse the older you get...Ask me how I know. Haha. Now-Stihl makes some outstanding equipment. I Have the Stihl HS 45 hedge trimmer as well as the MS 210C chain saw. Love em both. Enjoyed the video! Thanks for sharing. 👊😉

On an unrelated note - I just used it (two days ago???) after sitting for the WHOLE, LONG, TERRIBLE WINTER...it started in three pulls - THIS is why I bought a Stihl! Worked great, and I may only have to trim two or three times a season, but I don't want to have to kill myself to get her running. My old one was HORRIBLE for all the 12-13 years we had it. It was a "free" almost new trimmer, and I should have thrown it in the street and run it over (twice) just to avoid someone else being cursed by it!!! It was bad.

Yeah, Love this weed wacker, but I HATE weed wacking...only had to do it maybe 4-5 times since I got it, and that's about 5 times too many - LOL
You can move the protective orange skirt around so that the side of the skirt runs nearer to the house and not the cutting wire bud Skill are the best

I just bought a new stihl fs56rce and I'm hoping that I made the right choice. I was looking at an echo 225 srm but the store was sold old.
Well, I've only used mine two or three times now, and it's started very easily each time. My only issue is the angle of the head...but I wanted a straight shaft for more power to the head.
How do i replace the cutting line
I've have the same trimmer is awesome bad to the bone trimmer the power is amazing I love mine so much that I wish that I could buy a FS 94R a little bit more power then a Craftsman weed eater then 25cc my Stihl fs56 RC string trimmer is 27cc I love the mess out of it I took down weeds and brush with my Stihl fs56 RC string trimmer I wanna try a blade on it

Brian, fantastic video and thanks for demonstrating on how to use. I was wondering if you had a video of how you mixed the gas and the oil for it. You did mention 1 : 50 Just wished to see you do it. i know that its not complicated. Do you use non ethernal gas? I just purchased the same one you have and I am not experienced in using it yet. The line keeps disappearing even though I'll bump it on the ground a few times and even then the line wouldn't come out. Sorry to be long winded, but overall thanks and I'll subscribe to your channel.
I very recently decided the easiest way to do it is to use a small scale ;) I am a scale technician by trade, but you don't have to be one to do it...SUPER EASY
1) Use an empty container...lay it on the scale, and zero out (or TARE if there's no Zero function)
2) Pour in some premium gas (without Ethanol) and take note of the reading...mostly full, but not ALL the way to near over-flowing, as you'll need room for the oil too, and some air space for mixing it up.
3) Take the weight you see (I suggest in GRAMS, so you can just divide it by 50), then put it in the calculator and DIVIDE this by 50...the result is how much you need to add.
4) Zero (or TARE) the scale.
5) Add the calculated amount from step 3 of oil into the gas.
6) Cap it and shake it.
You'll NEVER go back to mixing with measuring cups once you do this...SOOOOOO EASY!!! Never make a mistake again!

The easiest way to mix by volume is to use the Stihl hp ultra 2.6 oz small oil bottle (or equivalent brand 2.6oz) and add it to 1 U.S.gallon of 91 octane gasoline, or higher if you can find it, and absolutely run only non-ethanol fuel. When I bought my FS56RC, the Stihl dealer increased the factory warranty when I purchased a 6-pack of the 2.6 oz oil bottles. Since I needed oil anyway, and the extra 2 years was a great deal, I went for it. After I used up the 6-pack, I just refill the 2.6 oz bottles with oil from a gallon oil jug to save money. Since I run chain saws as well and use a 1 gallon gas can most of the time for an easy refill, adding the 2.6 oz to a gallon makes it quick and simple out in the field or woods, since the 1 gallon is easier for me to pack around with my other falling and bucking gear. If you want to run another brand of 2-stroke oil, and you do not want to buy any oil in the 2.6 oz bottles as they are a more expensive way to purchase oil, you could probably stop at a chainsaw repair shop and get a few free empty 2.6 oz bottles from them to reuse. My local saw shop throws them out all the time, so they are easy to get around my neck of the woods. I run the heck out of my wacker on an acre of tall, thick, super stout weeds and brush every spring for wildfire control, and have never had any issues with it. The only maintenance items I have had in the last 4 years have been an annual removal and cleaning of the intake air filter, dead easy, and just yesterday the removal and unclogging of the spark arrestor screen after I loaned my machine to my neighbor, and he ran the motor at 1/2 speed (after I told him not to) which clogged the screen with unburned oil and slowed the rpm's way down. If you run it flat out most of the time like you are supposed to, the screen will very seldom get clogged. I ran it for four years without it happening, it is just something you need to know about with these motors. Run 'em hard and run 'em hot, and the oil in the mix will burn off during combustion after it lubes the cylinder like it is supposed to. Hope this helps you out. Oh, and do not forget to shake the gas can to keep the oil in suspension before you refill each time. 😉
Only thing is…for these trimmers, they have an elastic (spring assisted) starter rope. After awhile, if u continue to grip it and rip it, it’ll wear the starter out prematurely. The normal 56r’s (if the make them, idk) (not the 56rc) they have a normal starter like the 70r so u dont have to worry abt tht with those.

I don't see why not, but to be honest, all day, everyday, I'd probably go more powerful, and Stihl has a lot of great offerings in that arena.

Hi Brian. I have the same trimmer and I don’t like it. The spark plug bulge rubs against your elbow constantly. You have to put it one side or the other which effects the best angle. The rubber bit turns constantly and is annoying . I purchased it to replace my Echo that I’ve had for 15 years and regret It. I’m not a Stihl hater. I have a Mini Boss chainsaw and I love it. Edit . Maybe they put the bent shaft power head on the straight shaft model. It would work fine on the bent shaft.
I noticed the end is a bit large, but I've found that I kinda rest it on my hip, which seems "wrong", but works for me. I'm about 6'1" tall...you?

What's up with the plastic between grips? It spins! turning the trimmer on its head! It's right where you would normally hold the trimmer if you take off on a walk up a driveway. I'm going to cut mine off if I cant find a good reason for it's being there. The left hand grip will need adjusted per individual sliding it down on the shaft allows you more control of the head allowing you to swing the trimmer harder, also I personally spin my left hand grip to the right some. That allows me to place my elbow on the right side of the spark plug boot, and puts the rite angle on the trimmer head when using I hope that helps your experience with the trimmer also I switched from the eye glasses to full face shield now I can let her eat and no more dog shit to the face or fogging. Face shield might help with the chain saw making glasses fog.
I have the Stihl FS94R, it is .5lbs lighter than your trimmer. and I have got it to go almost 2 hours on a tank of gas.

If u dont mind getting little grass on u take the shield off lot easier to cut grass

I like to use braided trimmer line heavy duty trimmer line because if you use any other like 80 thousands trimmer line is to thin for me to use heavy duty trimmer line is the best

Lol i weedeat in just shorts . No shirt , no shoes or socks , no eye protection , no glives , but naybe ear protrction just cause my ears are sensitive. Been doing it for many many years and love when it kicks rocks or whatever it is back on my shins lol.

Yes, and it's been great! Can't say I like doing it anymore than before - LOL - but it has started in just a few pulls and ran till the tank is empty every time...and keep in mind, I have to fill the tank 2-3 times for just a quick trim around here ;)

You hate your grass don't you? :) why not load those areas up with wood chips? I just got my hands on the same trimmer. It was used and didn't run right. It didn't even run. But now it works awesome. World of difference compared to my battery one.

Instead of cutting that "grippy thing" off, why not remove the handle, slide the grippy thing ahead of it and put the handle back on? Then it'll be out of your way but you'll still have it if you ever figure out what it's for and want to use it.

Not a bad idea. We've been toying with ideas for its use....problem is, our kids LOVE to "sled" on it. They use boxes in the grass, and sleds in the snow.

If your other weed whacker, that you had for 12 years doesn’t want to work for you Anymore just take it all apart and throw it away in the garage.
It was terrible, all 12 years we ran it...but I'm a cheapskate, and I couldn't bring myself to get rid of a free tool... Would have been better to buy this one 3 times, then deal with the frustration ;)

Dude...You need to read the start instructions before you try to demonstrate the starting method...the way you choked the unit was not compliant with the manual... and took TOO much effort.

My Uncle gave me a string trimmer once that was hard starting. Several years later he had his in the shop and wanted to borrow mine. When he brought it back he asked me "Where did you get this POS?" I said, "You gave it to me." He then said, "Why couldn't you have been smart like I was and give it to somebody else?"
I have that Stihl FS56 RC-E myself. When he said he felt like he was pulling it too hard on startup, he may have been. If his is the RC-E it's equipped with their Easy start crank where it doesn't even really grab hold till about 2/3rds the way through the pull and when it does grab, it's using the first 2/3rds windup to sort of assist in the last 3rd of the crank...at least that's how I understood the guy at Ace describe it. I'm changing me head to a Stihl super cut 20-2 as it's an auto feed instead of a bump feed. I hate bump feeds because our ground is so uneven I'm constantly accidently bumping it.
You obviously don't know about the starting mechanism on that machine you don't have to pull it near as hard as you do

I don't have any issues starting this anymore. It starts in 1-3 pulls every time now. I think it was just new and difficult. Anything you can do in normal life, effortlessly, will be very hard on camera for some strange reason.

Actually, I just trimmed the whole driveway, and had to start and stop about 20 times to refuel, and replace string - but she started on one pull most of the time, maybe 2-3 when I ran her out of gas....but my primary issue with my last machine was getting it started, so as far as I can tell - PROBLEM SOLVED ;)
What a woos. Why not chaps, steel toe boots, a Stihl helmet with face guard. I wear shorts, Sperry Top Siders and no socks. If a broken piece of cutting line, twig or rock hits me I live with it. I am a Marine not a woos. The only safety equipment I wear is glasses, but I wear them all the time. Where is the shoulder harness that came with your trimmer. The F.s-56 is a high end residential trimmer with a lot of professional features. I’m sorry I just hate reviews of anything where the reviewer come out dressed in every bit of PPE they can find and look like part of a Swat team going on a call. My Husqvarna 28 L was a beast to start, too. It is now hanged up in the shop. It never let me down but it was heavy and not as well balanced as the Stihl.
I specifically don't have all the PPE on that's recommended. I just use the stuff I want to use, and get CRAP all the time for NOT having it all on! You're the first to call me a woos for wearing only parts of the PPE "required" by the safety nazis - I'll take this as a compliment.

The safety nazis you speak of probably would not know one end of a chainsaw or weed eater from the other and are just parroting back what someone else said. I fought for the right to wear any damn thing I want to wear. Tell them this - safety is an acceptable degree of risk. What is acceptable to me may not be to you and vice versa. There are no such things as guarantees and things without some degree of risk. You pays your money and takes your chances, as they say. If more of the current generation had served their country in time of war this would be a better place with a little more common sense.

We might need to do that anyway, since that hill has some issues with keeping good grass anyway...but the kids LOVE it...they take out bean bags and "sled" down the hill. It's pretty hilarious. When it's snowy, it's a go-to hill since it's actually pretty steep.

Yeah that orange stihl line is garbage. I have this trimmer i didn't really care for it . I recently bought a echo 2620 way better machine in my opinion. Comes with better line and the speed feed head. It also has way more power
I love this machine, but doubt it's the best one you can buy. One year later, started in 3 pulls ;) That's why I bought a Stihl ;)

This thing is a piece of crap. It literally sprays you with grass like the guard isn’t long enough. My featerlite didn’t even do that. I use to wear shorts and do Yardwork. Now I’m forced to wear pants.
I hate doing it, but just assumed that you were going to get sprayed with grass...I've never used one that doesn't.
As for sucking, I do agree there's some room for improvement, but I love that it starts easy, and works for about 1-2 hours as infrequently as humanly possible...so I call it great
