Hello everyone! I tried out this on three big healthy spruces 2 years ago. I cut down the trees last weekend and I must say that this technique is a time and energy savior. First of all, the needles fell off about a year ago, which made the branches light to handle after the tree was cut and trimmed. Second of all, the logs were lighter and ready to be chopped for firewood. However, I will save the axe work for next year. So, I don't know why I haven't heard of this technique before. But it seems that this method is super sneeky for taking down trees for firewood purposes. I will also try out how this girdling works on trees that I will use for logs/lumber.
Cody these last few videos have been favorite of the whole summer. Really looking forward to more of these. Also, are you going to resume work on the timber frame cabin in the future?
+LoadedMod94 He said in a video a while back that the timber frame cabin was all in pieces on a trailer during their move and somebody drove off with it. Unless he's started another project I'm not aware of, I think the cabin is gone for good. What a shame.
It's in the vows. To *HAVE* and to hold. Woman who marry agree to be property. Of course the men agree to also be the womans property too. But none the less.
Wise Beard Man Yea it wasnt meant to be taken too literally. It was just a bit of fun. However some thing in your comment was interesting and worth exploring i think. You say the right to not be owned is a fundamental human right. I would like to argue that, far to the contrary, the right *to be owned* is infact a fundamental human right. Now i know that sounds crazy but walk through the argument with me and see what you think. What is ownership? I think a pretty reasonable way to think about it is as a bundle of rights. Other rights can come with it but there are a few core rights one must possess in order to be said to own a thing. The first is the right to alter or change a thing. The second is to give another the right to alter or change that thing. The third is the right to transfer ownership of that thing to another party. This is sort of the general basics of the concept of ownership. Next I would like to posit as an axiom that the single most fundemental human right above all others is the concept of "self ownership". That is people, above all else, own themselves. If that definition is reasonable and the axiom posited is true than it logically follows that people are entitled to the right to sell themselves. Practically speaking we might contrive a scenario where a person would willingly chose to do this and be thankful for the ability to do so. Imagine a scenario where a mothers child is ill with a condition that would require vast resources to cure. Perhaps it is extremely rare and the cure would need to be researched and developed before it could be administered. Perhaps she might sell herself to some billionaire freakazoid in order to raise the vast sums necessary to research the cure to save her child. Just a fun thought expirment. You don't get a (i like to think) intellectually serious and rigorous pro slavery argument every day. ;)
Avah Hammond What grammar mistakes were made? Maybe some small stuff but looking back I think I got all of the important things right. Smaller ideas broken into complete sentences. Larger ideas broken into well formed paragraphs. Of course it wasn't perfect but it wasn't literally an argumentative essay. It was a youtube comment.

Anyone who can’t recognize the risk a dead tree poses is pretty unlikely to comprehend what “Killer Tree” and skull and cross bones means when placed on said dead tree. If you really think a sign is going to help I suggest “Hard Hat Area”. Thanks for explaining to me the benefits of girdling, I really didn’t “get it” until you explained it, and when I first saw the “Killer Tree” tape I assumed it was dipped in poison like the strips that are used to poison gypsy moth caterpillars.
I would like to add another reason for girdling. Girdled wood tends to last longer. The nutrients are used up, so spores cannot multiply. The tree is less sensitive to sap-stain or mold fungi which will lay the wood to waste. Fungi can be prevented with using fungicide at the saw mill. Light mildew can be treated. But why not girdle most trees destined for high quality wood like in construction, furniture, instruments, mouldings, etc? Generally, you increase the quality and durability of the investment at a very low cost.
That's not true. A lot of people on this channel are right wingers. Most of which have below average intelligence, as well as treating their women as possesions
Nice save 9:00! I've been told more than once... You may see women for sale on the internet, but they are not possessions! Hahaha! Great stuff as always, thanks!

This is the videos I miss. Such a different attitude then what you have now. This seems alot more positive and informative. I hope you have taken the time the last few days to read my comments
My wife was over heard me watching this video and she commented on the beauty of the music you chose to accompany your presentation. I agree it is very nice indeed. I remember some years ago there was this nice little cherry tree not far from our front door on common public property that brought much beauty and joy to the neighborhood. One day I caught this rotten mean kid peeling the bark similarly to the girdling you demonstrated here. I told her that she just killed that tree. She snidely retorted that "No! That's not going to kill it!" But it did and it had to be cut down. Every time I saw her walking by the little stump I'd point at it and say "too bad you had to ruin that poor tree, you must be proud of yourself"
While I appreciate the attention to detail and neatness to your whole cut, is it necessary to make a cross cut at all? How wide would it need to be to work and does the width have anything to do with how quickly it dies? I have yet to make a standing stag for firewood but can certainly appreciate the need. Thanks for serving - fire/rescue/EMS.
+Wranglerstar lol, I had that exact thought when you mentioned your wife as one of the top three possessions. Glad you clarified it :D I'd be curious to know how much "habitat trees" really help reduce the spread of invasive and destructive insects. It seems as though they don't just hang out in one tree, but spread like a virus everywhere they can reach (like the pine beetles).
+Jon Stewart (Vaulimere) I am also curious about this. My wild guess is that habitat trees provide more room for birds and the birds as a result cut back beetles by eating them so much. I do think though that the idea that beetles will just hang out in the one tree is questionable. Seems more likely that the abundance of food there would result in a spike in population that would just go after the other trees that much faster.
+Jon Stewart (Vaulimere) Cody did state 1 fact about this. 1 dedicated tree per 1 acre. If you break that down, that's actually a lot of trees on a small property. I'm unsure as to how much acreage Cody has but, I'm sure, we're only seeing 1 small part of it.
i love how you always leave your mistakes in! Im sure Mrs Wrangler appreciates the expansion on that point ! Also, is that a compass that clips onto your watch, or a watch with a built in compass?
My mate did this to a pine tree years ago and it seeped pine pitch and healed itself it's still active today.great vid and I'm a big fan of Dave from the pathfinders school a great inspirational bloke too thanks for sharing
Hahaha, I thought he was going to clarify that his wife was number 1, cause I was waiting for the joke about how the chainsaw is the other thing in the top 2.
I think we all understood what you meant. You take pride in caring and providing for your family. Mrs.WranglerStar is one tough cookie also I don't think anyone would disagree.
jeez! whenever I try to peel off a small bit of bark from a tree, people get really really mad at me and ask me what I would think if I was that tree.. lol
they (trees) don't have a brain. you need a brain to think. I wonder how those people feel about all the grass and weeds they are murdering when they cut their lawn. lol
They actually can, we just dont know how, they know when they have plants around them and can even distinguish them, they kinda live in a society. Something is true, they dont feel pain or any other animal emotion fisical or psycological including human's
I accidentally girdled a tree in Alaska when we got a Takeuchi track steer stuck in this mixture of mud/clay that just sucked it in. We strapped a tow strap around a tree and used the bucket on the skidsteer to pull it out. All the twisting on the tree girdled it and forever ruined that row strap because it was then coated with old, sticky sap. Great video
I was shocked when a friend of mine, helping to clear dead standing wood, ran my chainsaw right into the dirt. I told him he just dulled the chain, and to be careful. It was time to sharpen anyway. 60 seconds later, my same friend, who happens to have at least twice the hours on a chain saw as me, ran it into the dirt again. I’m no longer letting anyone use my saw.
I had to do that this morning to a healthy tree... I felt absolutely horrible doing it. Anyway, I really enjoy these videos. Can't think of a better way to spend my time than to be around nature all day and working like Wranglerstar.
Perhaps this is a silly question, but why was the sawing necessary? Just to make the job look neat?
I was wondering the same thing...

Second of all, the logs were lighter and ready to be chopped for firewood. However, I will save the axe work for next year.
So, I don't know why I haven't heard of this technique before. But it seems that this method is super sneeky for taking down trees for firewood purposes. I will also try out how this girdling works on trees that I will use for logs/lumber.
at least you try to take care of the resources at in in your possession.
+george symons it was I even took it out to show them what the perfect EDC should look like, LOL
Wranglerstar aren't you supposed to use an axe for bark so it doesn't dull your saw?

I figured 64-68 years old since you said the diameter at the start was 16 inches.
You're the Hank Hill of Trees.
justin waugh and the bob Ross of carpentry
This guy only knows how to kill trees. He knows nothing about them.
Plant Gollum oh shut up he's knows 10x more than you ur just a salty tree hugger
I do trees and tree accessories
Why do drugs when you can girdle a tree
I was on the couch at my firehouse and when his pager went off I jumped up and put my shoes on just to release it was his not mine lol
Thank YOU, for your service.

Cody these last few videos have been favorite of the whole summer. Really looking forward to more of these. Also, are you going to resume work on the timber frame cabin in the future?
+LoadedMod94 I believe he said that timber framing will be a winter project several videos back. I could be wrong though.
Cool, I seem to remember him mentioning it but I wasn't sure.
+LoadedMod94 He said in a video a while back that the timber frame cabin was all in pieces on a trailer during their move and somebody drove off with it. Unless he's started another project I'm not aware of, I think the cabin is gone for good. What a shame.
I know that. He still has half of it.
+Scott Bozarth People are mean
Ha that was funny how he said he owned his wife 😂. I'm glad he caught himself.
You don't get a (i like to think) intellectually serious and rigorous pro slavery argument every day. ;)
who else instantly scrolled down to look for SJWs and feminists complaining?
xcvsdxvsx When you write a whole argumentative essay in the comments. Haha! Nice grammar. 🏫
It was a youtube comment.
ahh the first wranglerstar video I ever watched. years later still love the content. keep it up!
That little double bit ax is beautiful
"I misspoke, let me rephrase that....."
Good save.
I didn't know this could be so professional
Cody, I've mentioned this before but it is becomming more obvious as time goes on. Your videography skills are superb. A movie company might want to pay you big bucks for your skills.
+Scott Jenkins Kind of you to say however, I'm nothing more than an amateur,
+Wranglerstar Please! Gifted Amateur, if you please.
I kind of snickered when you mentioned your three possessions and included your lovely wife. Talk about girdling... But I realize what you were trying to say before you said it.
Nice recovery & lovely video!
Your pager going off had me jumping up to put on my boots 😂
Done this for alder control, we used the hand scorps, but the power girdler was a blast!

You know you are passionate about what you do when you fall in love with your tools
This dude LOVES his tools
Have you seen the video about the cold steel trail boss
It was borderline soft core porn
Man. I had just drifted off when the tones went off. My feet were on the floor and my shorts on before I remembered I don't have a pager anymore that I left the company for a while lol. As always. Great video. Even if I'm late to watching it. A treat as always brother.
I thought he was going to say my wife is a close second to my saw.
This was one of the best random videos I have ever seen. I was completely enthralled the entire time.
PS @wranglerstar, what is that piece of music at 6:30?
Just saw the first sign of spring on a tree...
What a releaf
👏..👏..👏
That mistake corrected was a WONDERFUL testimony! Many men desperately needed to hear that! God bless you!
I don't think you get enough recognition for your camera work, it is truly magnificent!
The saw was originally part of the on vehicle equipment on a WWII halftrack and probably surplused.😊
No need to apologize, anyone with half a brain will understand what you meant.
enough people sadly would'nt
Vegeta damn I only have 49/100th of a brain
That's not true. A lot of people on this channel are right wingers. Most of which have below average intelligence, as well as treating their women as possesions

That helper handle is so well worked out it’s so refined simple strong easy to use. Lot of thought gone into it.
Your saw bag looks exactly like a Canadian forces vhf antenna bag. From the fabric, to the stitching, to the straps
That's typical military canvas, which are very durable. Used in equipment bags and tents. At least that's what I saw in the US Army 20yrs ago.
I love how casually you saw around that tree in a straight, level line to meet your original cut.
You can tell hes girdled some trees once or twice.
I enjoyed your music choices for your videos. I helps to convey your passion for your tools and your appreciation for the wild.
Nice save 9:00! I've been told more than once... You may see women for sale on the internet, but they are not possessions! Hahaha! Great stuff as always, thanks!
yea
that saw cuts it like butter 😯
Almost as good as a Silky saw !
I have a saw similar to that. Helper handle and all. Have never used it, hangs on the wall in my house. Never rusted, but used by a master arborist. Kept it very clean.
3.5 foot? are you only 4.5 feet tall? haha
I saw the same thing
I was thinking the same thing!

Mark Sarte You obviously didn't get the joke. joke..... Joke.
That's funny as shit
he put the receiver back in his pocket and said that meaning its not his thing to worry about
These old videos are so enjoyable and therapeutic. Thanks again.
3 1/2 feet? That saw nearly reaches your neck
“The saw was detained later that day on charges related to molesting young wood.”
the humility this man exudes is commendable.
nice informative video. well done.
I like that instead of just editing out that joke about his wife, he leaves it in so he can correct himself. We all slip up from time to time and as long as you own up to it I have nothing but respect for that
Being one of this mans tools seems like such a wonderful life.
I like the honesty. If you mis-speak/mis-think, you keep it for documentation of our human mistakes.
😂😂 my posessions “my wife” i could see the feminists coming from a mile off until you corrected yourself. You are her posession dont get it the wrong way round haha
No dude.
Your wife is yours.

@@vaughanlloydjones3884 virgin forever huh?
A girdling rasp would make quick work of that trunk, I can't believe you don't have one in your collection.
This is the videos I miss. Such a different attitude then what you have now. This seems alot more positive and informative. I hope you have taken the time the last few days to read my comments
my god that is a beautiful saw...
I like how he didn't even mention his kids when reading off the list of things/people he wouldn't loan to people
I mean, kids do go to school which is handing them off to some stranger for them to educate them
My wife was over heard me watching this video and she commented on the beauty of the music you chose to accompany your presentation.
Glad you clarified it :D
I'd be curious to know how much "habitat trees" really help reduce the spread of invasive and destructive insects.
I love this guy, salt of the earth - i am not ashamed to say that I have serious saw envy
i love how you always leave your mistakes in! Im sure Mrs Wrangler appreciates the expansion on that point !
Also, is that a compass that clips onto your watch, or a watch with a built in compass?
@Dr-Awesome thanks buddy!
Best piano intro cut away ever lol was that intentional 😂😂
My mate did this to a pine tree years ago and it seeped pine pitch and healed itself it's still active today.great vid and I'm a big fan of Dave from the pathfinders school a great inspirational bloke too thanks for sharing
like the guitar music.
+John Sexton thanks.
However what is it?? Im sure ive heard that piece before, any insights, anyone?
Hahaha, I thought he was going to clarify that his wife was number 1, cause I was waiting for the joke about how the chainsaw is the other thing in the top 2.
I think we all understood what you meant. You take pride in caring and providing for your family. Mrs.WranglerStar is one tough cookie also I don't think anyone would disagree.
jeez! whenever I try to peel off a small bit of bark from a tree, people get really really mad at me and ask me what I would think if I was that tree.. lol
TheTacticalBarrage how do you know trees don't think?
they (trees) don't have a brain. you need a brain to think.
So, how are things in California?
Do you have any "after the girdle" videos? Like what it breaks like? How it fell down?
AAAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAA The married man speaketh :P
You headed it off right at the path sir, well played.
I had to do that this morning to a healthy tree... I felt absolutely horrible doing it. Anyway, I really enjoy these videos. Can't think of a better way to spend my time than to be around nature all day and working like Wranglerstar.
The guy in this video and his crosscut saw need to get a room! Yikes!
Thank you. That made me giggle.
