Ledge Route, Ben Nevis Aerial Filming with a drone: The original Mountain Days Vlog

- On Friday 13th March 2015 I took my Phantom 2 drone fitted with a GoPro Hero 4 up onto the North Face of Ben Nevis to do some aerial filming.
I climbed Ledge Route, a grade 2 winter mountaineering route, and filmed myself as I climbed.
This project took 4 batteries and I was racing to climb faster than the batteries faded, whilst composing the shots and trying to get the footage I wanted. Its pretty difficult doing it this way, the ultimate mountain selfie perhaps, its definitely easier to compose the shots when filming other people, but I enjoyed the challenge. It was a stunning day!
The footage has been edited in FCP-X and the music is royalty free from Pond 5.
If you would like aerial footage for your own project, or a completed film like this one please visit my site filmuphigh.com
Scotland is sooo beautiful! Magical
I know it's an "old" video but honestly that is just awesome, not just the vid itself but probably even more the work and effort to shoot. It also goes to show what results so called old tech can produce in the right hands, as they say it's not the camera it's the guy using it . Massive respect Rob, just amazing.
I had never bin in scotland in my life. That is, why in this videos are some footages of landscapes, I never had expected in the Highlands. I allways thought about highlands some hills, crowded with gras all over and sheeps doing their sheep thing on it. Now I know, this region realy is worth bin called.. Highlands. - thanks from a absolutely greenhorn, from germany for this brilliant video. ;-)
Amazing video. Footage is unreal. Lets people appreciate how amazing and dangerous the Ben is.
Amazing.I adore Scotland and all of her beauty. Beautiful footage. I'd have to go the tourist route because I'm not a skilled climber.
Climbed with my parents what they thought was a large hill in Wales... we climbed the hill south by mistake 😂🤷♀️
But it was a good view of other climbers reaching the obelisk.
Mynyth troed.
Apologies, having to spell phonetically... even searched Google and can't find the proper Welsh spelling.
Still a funny anecdote from our family archives. 🥰
Gosh, a great winter day for doing Ledge Route.
And controlling the drone too at the same time! Smiles
Amazing video, that footage is incredible!!
Thanks very much.
I know this is old footage, but I bloody love this video. Going to do this one day with my drone. Excellent effort.
Tremendous video, watched it several times now, well done
This was fantastic! My class loved it as we are doing mountains at the moment, they thought you were amazing and very brave. Thanks
Stunning video i see it everyday from my window but this made me appreciate its beauty and elegance along with its hostile slopes so much more. Also spare a thought for those guys on the mountain rescue team that tackle this beast in all weather as volunteers. Great Video.
Is Ben Nevis higher than Nelson's Column in London?
Mike Fuller yes, about 26 times bigger!
I used to live in Lochyside, And had a good view of the Ben from my window, I really miss it now.
Great video, beautiful shots and top end walking and droning skills!
Absolutely amazing. Thanks.I always watch videos like this with the sound off. Doesn't matter if the music is good or bad, it's just not part of what is visually happening.
i have an issue with your video man.. i have been watching this and putting it on replay for a good hour, can't keep my eye of it. so Epic...so Amazing...
absolutely brilliant footage of the climbs
Hi rob, I was just wondering if you use the wide landing gear to avoid the gopro capturing the skid or can you fully avoid this with the gopro FOV settings?
Awesome. Great respect for the walk/climb and the filming. Thank you for publishing.
Utterly stunning footage, blows your mind, well done Rob!!!! a real treat :) Tim
Best vid of LR in winter by far mate, well done. What descent route is that? Is it No4 gully? I'm doing LR soon and that descent looks amazing
First class, absolutely awesome!!
Best drone film I've seen. Well done.
That was a pleasure to watch but must have been incredibly difficult to film. Well done, it was awesome.
Stunning video, thanks for sharing.
Drones are an absolute game changer.
Brilliant video, I have done pony truck in winter but would love to do ridge route but think need guide as would no safe track
Awesome Video Rob, I'm subscribed... 👌🏻
I fancy doing Ben Nevis myself... I took the drone to the lakes last weekend had a blast...
Fantastic Drone footage Rob,I must get one soon !
Stunning! The ultimate selfie for mountain climb
Wow, great video! Really impressive, thanks for that!
Agree. Congrat for the video and actions. Suggestion: touch better stabilization and color ( have you never seen works by Yuri Palma, for instance Aerial climbing, or by Seb Montaz?). Keep it up
Beautifully done. I have been talking to my daughter about climbing the three peaks. Now I know what the challenges will be for Ben Nevis.
I agree mate I searched and watched this with an idea of hopefully climbing them never done any climbing but it's something I'd love to do even though none of my mates have the slightest interest lol I bet climbing those peaks would make me feel great and full of pride forever as Brits for us mate it's the best of all the peaks again the pride would last a lifetime
+Abdul Rashid Abdul Aziz Hello mate, Four mates and I have just completed the three peaks (16/10/15), take the easy routes if you're going to do all three. Scafell and Ben where the damage. All three together are brutal at this time of year. Good Luck.
Awesome video !! Incredible images scaling and piloting !!. I have subscribed.
Wonderful documentary !!
Greetings.
After yesterday this will be getting a lot of repeat views Rob!
Quite right 😀
i climbed BN today and it was a good weather and got a chance to see the amazing view from the summit. it took me ages to climbed but its worth it.
Wow. Really impressive film. Nice work!
Man! your vids are awesome!!!!, some day i'm going to visit you and learn to climb mountains, i need to acomplished my dream!, you are an inspiration for me, greetings from Colombia! excuse me for my english.
Great video . I feared for your life . You seemed to be walking over every point in the snow that is likely to break away beneath you.
That looks Mega, been wanting to do it for a while and now more motivation. Can i ask what was the ascent and descent times please?
Amazing. No issues with the wind?
Wow 👏 what a great video buddy 🏔🤙
Amazing Video! Really Enjoyed
Great video - to watching without the end... Well done :)
can you share your typical pack list? whats in the bag? do you take warm overnight stuff incase your stranded up there or do you rely on an airlift if it goes wrong?
Climbed it in may was 19 degrees but would love to do it in the autumn/winter time but best thing I've done in a long time.:)
Superb, great job!
nice one! good music also! what's the music please?
You do realise that the cornices could have cause a avalanche, its about 2.32 mins into the film awesome footage and great climbing well done :D
Hello Sir, would it be possible for us to use some clips from this in a film we're producing
Is Ben Nevis higher than Nelson's Column in London?
only about 30 times the height, not much difference really...
I know nothing about mountains, SalemKid.
I have never climbed a mountain in my life.
I have been up Cromer Church Tower, at about 160ft.
I prefer the urban world to the wilderness!
My favourite scenes are town and city and flattish farmland.
Looks like you had fun though!
Ben Nevis is Britain's tallest mountain, could be Europe's also but unsure, defo Britain's tho
@@Baha88 lol it's not Europe's tallest mountain mate
@@danm1108 why "lol", I said I was unsure
Hi, Can i use part of your video on my website ? its for a small NGO and we would like to use it for our threepeakchallenge. Hope to hear from you soon
Mistrzoststwo Swiata!!! :)
Are you using a gimbal / stabilizer?
damn..this video make me want to go there again..but, it seems the last year for me to stay in scotland.. :(
hey did you use active track for this? or did you walk whilst flying?
I walked whilst flying. It was 2014 and so in the days before active track - this was just a GoPro stuck to the bottom of a Phantom :-)
@@RobJohnson ah thanks man! Your video really inspired me to make something similar to that, epic views. I hope you carry on
how do you film your self whilst climbing? does it lock on to you or are you wearing like a transmitter bracelet of some sort so it tracks you>
owl barn the drone tracks the controller where ever it may be. In this case he was holding it. You can see it on some parts of the video. It’s called active track.
This is the Winter ?
Fantastic video! Great work, like and sub :)
Awesome dude!
amazing video!
This video is so cool
Was that the Ledge Route?
David Farquhar yes
sick shots
That was amazing
Brilliant.
Did not spot any yetti up there but you never know they might have got bored with mount Everest and moved to the UK.
Unbelievable!
Great dedication to capture some stunning footage. #roaminscot
Great. Amazing.
Impossible to dislike this video....
Thanks because they are probably boring or crusty old fuddy duddys who are anti- drone and don't embrase new technology and what it can show us.
This is fantastic! Have you ever heard of AirVuz.com? Would love to see this there!! Mind blowing beauty! :)
what can i say, Fantastic shots, great editing, Top quality work Rob, Please can you contact me when you are home next :) Thanks
Amazing
That it AWESOME !!!
excellent footage try the new cinematic preprogrammed drones they lock onto you automatically you can just concentrate on what yer doing stay alive whilst being filmed dont have to operate nothing!!
they produce cinematography quality shots!!
Epic.
Epic!
Great footage 👍🏻
Nevis is the Everest of the British Isles.
It's the best
Ok
the jello is real
Hope you made good money from filming this video on UA-cam. It's exceptional
Terrible noise pollution accompanying the film.
