- Dr Death Steve Williams discusses how the Brawl for All tournament ended his wrestling career in WWF. Stream New Shoot Interviews 📺 TitleMatchNetwo...
RIP to the late-great Steve Williams. Here Dr Death talks about what went wrong with his run in the World Wrestling Federation. The entire point of the Brawl for All was to eventually slot Williams in the main event picture against Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Unfortunately as the Doc describes here, WWF kept changing the rules of the contest. Steve tore his hamstring on a takedown from Bart Gunn and was then knocked out cold by the former Smoking Gunn.
Dr Death's WWF career essentially ended that evening and he never again reached the level of stardom that he had in Japan. Williams would quickly disappear from WWF programming as Bart Gunn went on only to get knocked out by Butterbean at Wrestlemania 15.

Boy Dr. Death not getting much credit here in the comments. He's not making excuses to me. He's just saying his side of the story. He doesnt deny getting his ass KOd. He just admits that he didnt even realize it, which is perfectly acceptable in that situation situation. He doesn't take anything away from Bart. This interview actually made me laugh my ass off when he looked in the cam and went "MEEEEE?! Doc Death getting KOd?!! WHAT?!!" 😂
I'm Mid South.,he was the MAN....I'll never forget his version of the Stampede
Same here, I was almost 12 when I watched this interview & I was laughing too, hehe. That quote has stuck with me ever since.
Most of the "comments" are not from actual adults.
Shitstain killed his career and cost him millions
He was the toughest guy in the business till he got punched the mouth.😂
I boxed for quite some time and was a sparring partner for a top ten pro and can tell you that with the right punch anyone can be knocked out.
Exactly anyone who knows fighting knows anything can happen in a fight. The people who think they know everything and think they know this guy will for sure beat that guy and theres no other possiblity are the ones who don't know anything about fighting.
This pro wrestlers can't fight.
Yup. EVERYBODY has got that "button".
That’s not even a question anyone can be knocked out from the punch they don’t see
Incorrect. Some aren't trained boxers. Many are trained in a fighting sport. Geesh your comment sounds so adolescent. @@hellothere-b6q
Killed barts career too
Dr death Steve Williams was and still is one of the best in my opinion hate they didn't use the man better but in any case he's a legend and one of the best wrestlers there was back in the day he should have had a world championship run........
Bradshaw suffered a similar fate and went on to become world champion. There's a world of difference between the company quitting on a guy and the fans no longer viewing him as credible. WWF booked something absurd and chose to wash their hands of Steve rather than try to correct their own mistake with him.
That's right Brain :)
Exactly these guys pretend to get KOd all the time and because for once he actually got KOd for real WWE didn't know what to do? WWE was so butthurt they punished Bart for winning and punished Steve for losing...so stupid
The issue is that this was supposed to catapult Steve into a main event sort of push as the baddest man around and that was immediately killed. You aren't wrong though, they instantly killed him off and he was done.
See that brick wall right there? Dr death would go right through that brick wall - Jim Ross
Not if that wall is named Bart Gunn.
@@Wallywood187 haha well said. If you rewatch the raw after bart won that, you can tell jr is shooting to bart about "lucky shot" or whatever he said. Couldn't handle it lol.
@@R.yeehomeO exactly! Bart had hands man.
@@Wallywood187 yessir he got it done.
JR should never have contacted him.
THANK YOU. I always said JR is partly complicit in Docs downfall..

@@adamirishconundrum851 Sicko.
Yeah BFA was a hell of a clusterf... I remember Steve Blackman taking Mero down like 1000 times but then with the gloves you couldn't do much so it was just over and over again.
RIP Dr Death..
I was a fan of Dr. Death., i liked that turnbuckle to turnbuckle then power slam... Too bad he didn't get to shyne in the WWF
That Brawl was the worst idea ever. It ruined Steve’s career. His loss could’ve been easily corrected, but Vince chose not to because he had his favorites. Even the guy who actually won hot screwed out of the money as well as the promise of a career.
I remember Doc doing a phone interview and was asked about Ross. He asked Ross if he could send some WWF guys to an independent show Doc was working on. "All I got out of him was 'Boomer Sooner', 'How bout them Sooners?'" Jim Ross has always been all about Jim Ross.
The Brawl for all was the true killer. Nobody's career was the same after that.
They specifically brought in Dr Death to work a program with Stone Cold Steve Austin. That would've been awesome.
Steve Williams sounds like Steve Austin when he speaks.
and ironically Steve Williams is Austin's real name
If there was no Terry funk Sabu might have been Terry Brunk.
He sounds like he’s from Colorado though
I think at that point WWF wasn’t looking to push Dr Death. He was older and him losing in the Brawl For All was the excuse they needed to not use someone that made their name elsewhere. And probably the only reason he got hired was because he was a close friend of JR. I equate Dr Deaths run with Vaders where they were never going to push guys that got famous outside of WWE.
they had built up his character for months 😂
I thought they pushed Vader, it was just that he worked with Shawn Michaels and he decided to put the kibosh on Vader in the WWF.
They built this guy up to be fearsome a big deal he's coming in for this big multiple months long program.
RIP Steve 🙏
Sad that he thought he was going to set up his kid with the winnings. In typical Vince fashion the winner was never paid.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
I thought Butterbean won the brawl for all tournament? Or did Gunn win the tournament then he faced butterbean in a standalone match on ppv?
@@VincentK.McMahon Gunn won the tournament then in typical Vince fashion he tried to milk it further by having the winner fight ButterBean. Or some say the BB fight was punishment for Gunn winning and not who they wanted to win.
Career destroyed, people getting knocked out, million of dollars down the drain, the Brawl for All did nothing for the ratings. All from the mind of Vince Russo because he heard JBL backstage boasting he's the toughest man in the locker room.
Well…he could have said “no” and not get the 100k
Well said, Bro
I wanna see AEW do a version of this with their middle school looking wrestlers.
Vince McMahon still had to ok it
Yeah but JBL got knocked out so it was all worth it. I think how they handled Bart after winning was the real travesty.
#RIPDrDeath
Man how the hell did Rob Finestein book EVERYONE for shoot interviews? He must have had a ton of money to throw around.
Between paying for shoot interviews and arranging to meet minors for illicit activities, he must’ve had quite the income.
Most of the guys were either far past their prime and/or desperate for a pay off. After ECW and WCW folded and wrestling in both american and japan crashed, there wasn't much work. Hence why all these people either worked regular low-level jobs and were just happy to leash out and collect money for it. Sean Oliver in his various shoots said that they paid between 400 and 5000 dollars depending on the name value for their various programs. Since they mostly overpaid workers and catered to their needs (infamous stories with Bagwell, Konnan and the Seagram Vodka Honky Tonk Man demanded) , it's safe to asume that RF paid actually less.
Dr. Death was on month-long vacation from AJPW when this interview was made, so something he thought he'd do on the side. Around August-December 2001, he wasn't being used much on AJPW TV until 2002 came along.
No bumps. Easy payday.
@user-ef9dt6xw3o i think I see what you did there and I approve
In the list of wrestling's toughest guys, Bart Gunn really should get his due. Won a shoot tournament among wrestlers, KOing Dr Death, Bradshaw and Godfather.
I remember hating that damn brawl for all so damn much.
Crazy how the brawl for all killed the career of the one that it was designed for to win. Then as punishment they killed the career of the man who won it for messing up their plans.
I once heard Solomonster say that the brawl for all didn’t end that many peoples careers. Dr. death Steve Williams never really had a run again after it, the way they booked things killed Bart career, I’m not saying it was because of physical injury, but there were a few of those guys that were on the shelf for a few months afterwards, but please point to me the wrestlers that had a successful career after this? Hard-core Holly might be the one that had the best run after that and it’s not like he became a three time intercontinental champion or anything.
Brawl For All was a disaster because it made EVERY WWF wrestler look bad. The only person it made look good was Butterbean.
That Brawl for it all ruined careers..thanks to Vince Russo and Vince McMahon…it killed Doctor Death’s career and humanized Animal and Hawk…
How did it humanize Animal?
@@Garrett316 By association
@@Garrett316 It ruined the mystique of The Legion of Doom…
That JR is a real genius....
Totally uprooted and destroyed his career. Guy was in Japan probably really enjoying his career there. And making a really, really good living. They made really good money in Japan.
I don't think Dr Death liked to lose! lol
I think Steve could of gave Bart Gunn abit more credit
That would ruin his delusional narrative
He was taken down by Bart twice. The first one was in the ropes. The second one, a round later, was in the middle of the ring and is actually where his leg was injured.
His excuses here are weaker than his performance that night.
He was living off his past accomplishments. Then the present came knocking on his door, and he got his ass whipped. And that's the bottom line because Stone Cold said so!
@@grippler3166 true. He also proved he couldn’t throw much of a punch compared to Bart Gunn
It's not like he took anything away from him.
Worst part of BFA was feeding the winner to Butterbean lol that killed everything. Why put guys who aren't trained fighters vs a guy who can box?
Even Butterbean said, it was so easy to knockout Bart Gunn.
So it wasn't just a boxing match.
Making wrestling real is dumber than making boxing fake.
So, the winner of Brawl for All who was Bart Gunn didn't get his career in professional wrestling ruined? Shoot fight created by Vince Russo, he was the better man (Gunn) and what did Vince McMahon do, he screwed him at WrestleMania 15, forcing him to fight with Butterbean (a legit MMA person against a professional wrestler). Give me a break.
He was just a bigger draw in Japan and not in America
With ALL of the transition happening... I think "they tried" to put him over... then distanced themselves and left him holding the bag, when it failed.
How much money do you think Steve made in Japan?
Good old JR.....Genius. 😂
The “toughest guy” won _Brawl 4 All_ , and that wasn’t Dr. Death Steve Williams. I’m tired of hearing about how Williams _thought_ he would win, or how he was _expected_ to win. He f*cking lost. That’s it, and that’s all.
So true bro
If you’re tired of hearing about it then why are you here watching this video? Move it on down the road.
BART whooped your ass. WWE screwed Bart over being a true bad ass
All the WWE did was show what sometimes happens when a past his prime athlete is in over their head. Doc had not a legitimate wrestling match since his college days and no boxing experience I was aware of.
bart had a chance at being a real bad ass when he fought butterbean
Doc was an amateur wrestler and he says at the end that the gloves limited him. That he couldn’t do what he normally could in a shoot.
With no boxing training and just being a tough dude …Doc was way in over his head.
And Bart did have boxing training?
@@jumbothompson And ?
I think JR should have fought Butterbean.
Dr. Death did get beat but that doesn't change the fact that he was one of the toughest guys in the business in his prime, his huge size/strength combined with his NCAA Wrestling skills makes him a nightmare for anyone in his prime back in the 80's. By 1998 he was out of shape, past his prime and got beat by a better fighter in Bart Gunn which is no shame.
Even in 1998 the only guys in the BFA other than Bart that could have taken Williams were Dan Severn, Steve Blackman and probably The Godfather.
Shamrock
@@chrisnolan8885 Shamrock wasn't in the Brawl For All
@@kevthegoat8774 Oh I didn't notice the BFA part
Most of these guys falsely believe that they can whoop anyone and anybody just because. Well, Mr. Williams found out that that isn't the case, didn't he?
Seen this match, he got his ass whoop
He would sound tougher if he just acknowledged that Bart got the best of him.
im pretty sure thats what he did, he even said he hit so hard that he didnt even remember that he was KOd
Steve
MENG is the toughest man in the business
Doubtful. Lots of made up stories and Kayfabe and he never was threatened the way guys like Kurt von Hess, who survived so many riots and murder attempts by fighting back, that at one time in the 50's Vince McMahon Sr. actually had to break kayfabe and publically state that William Terry was just playing a character and wasn't really a german nazi. The old heels had to endure and survive a lot more than Meng ever had to and the fact they survived throughout everything makes them a lot tougher.
That's just a rumor. People build up Meng just out of kayfabe but when he was in WCW everybody knows that Meng was desperately scared to death of Ricky Morton. The Rorck and Roll Express was known for being bullies backstage and one time Haku was trying to look ttough and Morton was having none of it. He gave Meng a wedgie and then flicked him in his ballsack and Meng dropped to the ground screeching like a 12 year old girl who got run over. Then Morton made KwiWee pull down his pants and then The Maestro pushed Mengs head into KwiWee's butt and made him join the WCW "kiss my ass club". Meng quit but then the boys felt sorry for him and told him that if he comes back they will tell stories of him being the toughest wrestler to ever live...
but Ricky Morton knows the truth...
Mark lol.
Wrestlers of the generation prior to him were tougher. You believe he had all those bar fights and nobody pulled a knife or gun? 😅
😂😂😂@@BradleyVolk3
😭😭😭
Is this the first time this taping ever made it to UA-cam? Cause we were led to believe a different story
Let’s be honest here, this dude was never gonna be on the level of Steve Austin.
Past his prime beat up , he was not the DR.DEATH that broke into MID-SOUTH now when he first broke into as ALL-AMERICAN Football player & wrestler from Oklahoma no he was a older man whose body gave out that day his hamstring & glute his chest was jiggling out of shape for him and for real combat and took away his ground game he had to stand with somebody who fought tough man experience so fans need to know not prime DR.DEATH and they say no but I bet the cancer was starting to have a small effect on him
Damn WWE destroy his career because he didn't come earlier
Might've had a better run if he joined around 1991-92
He'da had a sweet action figure in that era.
@@idkmybffjv That'd be icing on the cake aside from some possibly epic matches with the likes of Bret Hart, HBK, Yokozuna, Macho Man, Razor Ramon, Jake the Snake, Undertaker... among other talent of the time
You can tell a guy got his ass beat when he has to give a long explanation as to why it happen. 😂😂
Sounds like hes making excuses
😂😂 he forgot wrestling is fake
Never heard his side of the story. He clearly believed his own hype, otherwise he wouldn't need the long-winded story . 🙄
Dan Severn, great guy who I beat in college... 😂
Because wrestling is choreographed ballet with physicality. So Williams had never been in a real.fight......
When I was 12 I thought JR was gay for this guy so bad. Just from how strong he put him over constantly. And his matches weren't great in wwe at the time. Lol
Man,they shoulda fixed it. Dude was broken the F down, heavy. Looked like sh**.
Looks like a hench Gordon Ramsey
He would have been knocked out even if he didn’t get hurt. His ego just won’t let him admit it. You can tell he’s was bothered by it even years later. It should not have because it happens to the best of them but you can tell he feels emasculated by that beat down…
dr death and bart gunn meet again 2 years later in japan ua-cam.com/video/n7P1rssMlZs/v-deo.html
RIP Dr Death WCW was low class mocking JR and him taking shots at JR being with him as Oklahoma Ed Ferrara wtf 😒 just so sad
Brawl for it All was awesome! That was REAL fighting. I wished they would have another one. I'm not a big fan of Russo but this idea was great! After it all ended there was a lot of bitching and moaning as to how it went. The guys that thought they were tough found out different as did we fans. It was just awesome and I really wished they would do another one and include the women to.
yeah, Brawl For Drawers...
WWE is the best wrestling company ever, obviously. But as a Southern fan, I am not a WWE guy. I hate how they did, Dr. Death, Barry Windham, Harley Race, Vader, Sting. They had no respect whatsoever of Southern legends. Which why to this day I give AEW a chance over & over again. We need a WWE alternative. Sting was able to get his proper send-off.
It isn't a wrestling company, they're sports entertainment. There are far better matches in New Japan, AEW and TNA than WWE.
Nothing obvious especially since they're not the best wrestling company ever. Just the most profitable.
Wrestlings dead, get over it.
Dr. Death was the 80s version of Brock Lesnar.
Of stone cold
Steve Williams was strong but he never impressed me wrestling he probably played a great football game then everyone got mad at Bart for knocking Steve out but that's why they were there to win they underestimate Bart and overestimated Steve
What?
Hmmm. Why does Bayley have a job?
Russo SCREWED Dr Death, Bro!!
He thought cuz he’s was jacked and 40 years old he was tougher than everyone?
This is why you don't vote in anyone that don't know anything about anything. This super mayor was arrested for breaking in cars like 4 years prior to becoming mayor 😆
The lesson here is football and wrestling skills do not equate to automatic boxing skills. Duh!
Of course you think it's bs lol Bart gun destroyed you
How is this a discussion? He got beat up and anybody who got beat up was buried lol! EDIT: whoops I didn’t know this was an old shoot. Anyway everybody did tryouts in the WWF no matter who they were. I loved Dr Death but he was washed and he was always supposedly this tough guy. Meanwhile him and the other 2, the Road Warriors, got whooped the first time they had to fight.
So your ego pressured you into fxcking up.
😂
Steve is still alive? I’m glad to hear that! I heard he had passed. It was a set up to ruin Dr. Death
This interview is from 2001. He died in 2009.
Lmao, as if hed look like that now.
Apart from the B4A being totally pointless, this guy was never suited to the attitude era. fine he was a shooter and a great amateur college athlete, but, IT ISN’T REAL! Being a “real tough guy” isn’t relevant. Be a good performer.
If Vince Mcmahon really wanted this guy to be the top heal who would push Stone Cold, then it would have happened.
Like Piper he had a big Rep that he could never live up to...Fake tough guys are all over the place...
He doesn’t strike me as a guy who is going on about how tough he was at all. Seems very modest and has a lot to say about the business.
Steve was over rated because of JR.
This guy was never going to be a big star during the Attitude. He just didnt fit at all plus he was too old at the time. They fact he had to do a tryout match proved he didnt fit in the Attitude era.
Ask Jim Cornette what he thinks about the brawl for all!🤬
Never heard of him.
You're about 15 years old, right?
(not an insult) This guy was really never in WWE. He was RARELY in WCW. But he is a FUCKING LEGEND. I can not even believe that I am watching this interview.
You've heard of him now.
I'm 34 and I knew of Dr. Death in early 1994 thanks to stumbling upon Doc vs. Kobashi 1993. My first match. Everyone else my age only knew of Dr. Death as "that guy in the video game" (WWF Attitude).
He never heard of you either.
Lmao. Go away.
So he believed his own hype 😅 He couldn't have taken down Dan Severn or Ken Shamrock.
He actually pinned Dan Severn in less than a minute back in college
You didn't have to participate in the Brawl For All you goose ...
Let me get this straight, mr. "Tuff guy" "dr. death" is making excuses as to why he got ko'd? If you're "not a boxer" don't step in a boxing ring!
Put up a link to all the highlights of your career than bigmouth
None of them were boxers and Dr Death got whooped by another non boxer. There's no excuses to be made. He knew what he was signing up for.
Clearly this guy has 0 clue when he's talking about. Maybe the concussion he got in a boxing exhibition he volunteered for was effecting him.
Steve's suffering from ego here. He's full of it pretending to know what to do with money. He was broke when he died and broke here too. He made a lot of money and was broke like the rest. Someone tougher is always around the corner. Always. Great wrestler. Family man. World class collegiate champion. RIP

His net worth was $2 million dollars by the end of his AJPW run in 2003, and his house in Louisiana was valued at $500k when he passed away, but from 2004-2005 he had to pay out-of-pocket for two years between two different countries for throat cancer treatment. Was rejected for health coverage for his throat cancer in both Japan and the USA. That's what made him broke at the end.

That does seem to be the case.

You clearly aren't a wrestling fan because wrestlers used "hooked up" all the time when connecting with wrestlers and organizations for bookings.
