My Texas friend always dreamed of moving to Japan. One day, he finally got the chance as his wife was being stationed in Tokyo. He told me when they bought their used car, it was still in great shape even though it was perhaps already 15 years old. He said that Japanese people really know how to take good care of their cars that even a used one looks still new.
@@LIJ As someone who works on cars here in the USA and lives in a state where there are no state inspections of vehicles, I'm going to guess that the condition of older vehicles in Japan are as good as if not better than any vehicle here that's 5 years or older, haha! Is it expensive to license and register a vehicle there? Is it true that there are taxes there on older vehicles that can reach the point that it becomes too expensive to own an older vehicle because its value becomes too low? In New Zealand there is a huge market for used cars from Japan. Many people buy used used Japanese cars. My mum’s current car is from Japan. My dad’s old car was also from Japan and whenever you turned it on it for the first time in a day it would speak and tell you the day of the week in Japanese. Used Japanese cars are always in good condition and cheaper than new cars so people commonly buy them. I think cars become really expensive in Japan after they are a certain age to try and incentive people buy new cars and don’t use old ones that are in bad condition so they end up having lots of good cars that are no longer being used so they get shipped off to New Zealand to be sold.

I moved to Norway 5 years ago and transportation is very similar. Riding bikes are a normal way of travel. The electric bikes and electric scooters are now so popular! You have a beautiful family and I absolutely love your channel. Keep up the great work and awesome content!
I was in Japan last year for a holiday and travelled around quite a bit using various modes of transport. It was the best I have ever known and fun as well especially riding on the Shinkansen.
You're so right: Shinjuku station is so well designed. It's extraordinary how stress free and calm it is to get around it considering how busy it always is. I'm comparing it to London's train system, for reference.

My favourite mode of transport is the train. My late father hated flying. So as a kid we would always go to Italy by train. I loved travelling though. My favourite leg of the journey was through Switzerland. If I visit Japan I am definitely trying out the bullet train! Have a great weekend everyone!
Yet another lovely video :) When travelling japan, I had a single gear bike and had the option of sitting or standing to make it easier to move haha. I also used trains and the Shinkansen around the country, which was great as a tourist but less as a resident, where I then started getting night buses! They take a while, t hours Nagoya to Tokyo instead of 1.5, but are super comfy, with sleep shades and separate rows for women it was quite nice. I’m hoping to move back to Japan soon and maybe even get a car this time, thank goodness Brits can just pay a conversation fee with no practical 😄 Can’t wait to see more videos in the future, and thank you so much for the ones so far, they’ve really helped me at this time to be grateful for all the things around me as well as getting to see a family perspective of Japan :)
The area you live in looks so cozy and nice and friendly😍 here in Finland we actually don't need cars,even though most people have one anyway, as busses or trains or subway or tram takes you almost everywhere. I don't have a drivers licence, my parents didn't have either. But if you live far out on the countryside it is absolutely better or even necessary, to have a car because busses might run only a few times a day!

Public transportation is well developed in big cities such as the suburbs of Tokyo and Osaka, so you can go anywhere by train, bus and on foot. That's why many people use public transportation rather than owning a car. The parking fee is also high. However, when I go to the countryside, things change a little, and I still need a car because there are no trains or the number of trains is small. Also, the bicycle "Mamachari" has become an indispensable vehicle for Japanese moms. Electric-assisted bicycles are ideal for shopping in the neighborhood and picking up children. Even in the REUTTER-family, "mamachari" is useful, isn't it?
I was reminded again that Tokyo's transportation system is excellent. Ten percent of Japan's population lives in Tokyo. If you include the neighboring prefectures, it's about 30%. I think this is one of the reasons for the development of the transportation network. It's similar to trains, but we have a monorail system. There are three monorail systems running in Tokyo. I know that there is a monorail system in Okinawa too.
I wonder how people park their bikes when they need to go to work though.... and what if you have to walk into a supermarket? I’m just so impressed how you guys just go with the flow and adapt to the new environment. You speak the language you read the language you do all the stuff like hiking and camping that’s good for you. I always feel like going to a different country would have so many problems, but after watching this video, I felt like I’d do just fine. Hope to hear what you Americans have to say about local Japanese food. Cause food is so important to people I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys just feel like you wanna keep your pizzas and fries and sandwiches. But I have to say, I find that Japanese home food is very good for body and is much easier to keep eating everyday even compared to my home country’s food, Cantonese Chinese cooking. Japanese home food (miso soup and grilled fish) is quite easy on the stomach, takes less time to prepare, has simple and mild flavours, and Japanese rice is some of the best rice in all of Asia combined. I would like to hear what you guys think about having to adjust your eating habits after moving to japan because of the difference of availability of food and how you dealt with it. It must be weird to not have cheeses and ham and salad veg etc readily available and all the veg is Japanese veg.

There is certainly an adjustment you make, but in the greater Tokyo area there are a lot of foreign options which is nice. And we tend to like it all (at least give it a try). As far as bikes go, there's lots of bicycle parking (free and paid) all over the place, so things are well setup to handle this sort of transportation. it took me 2weeks to get a license in the US and I had never driven before. and it took me 3months to get a license in Japan even though I had been driving in the US for 3years! 3 months is pretty fast though... my Japanese friend took a year to get it!
My dad used to be charged 999,999 yen when he parked his car in the parking lot. It was a mechanical mistake, but I remember being in a hurry at that time lol.

It's true. And every two years there's a mandatory checkup for your car. In fact, ours is due soon.

Sweden too. Actual bicycling infrastructure. I'm in the U.S., and I get mocked for riding my bike. But I'm 63, and I have great health.

私は、サラリーマン時代に東京都府中市に住んでいました。多摩川が懐かしいです!東京では、殆ど地下鉄利用で府中市では、京王線乗っていました。現在定年退職して四国松山に住んでいますが自転車とマイカー利用です!しかし高齢になり自転車は、足が非常に疲れます。ママさんは、偉い頑張っていますね、😅

Trains are GREAT. I took Amtrak when my oldest was young. Portland to Seattle.

今日も興味深い視点の良い動画を有り難うございます！私も東京に長く住んでますが交通網は全部把握できません！JR、私鉄、都営地下鉄、メトロ、都営バス、私鉄系バス！複雑な交通網を使いこなしているタイラー家は凄いと思います。自転車もそのまま「 ママチャリ」って呼んでるのも意外でしたよ！ 自転車を別名→「チャリンコ」又は「チャリ」と言うのは知ってたんですね？ママがスカートを履いてるときに足を上げてフレームを跨がなくてもいいようにハンドルとサドルの間のフレームが抉れてる自転車を「ママチャリ」といいます。
それは良いデザインです。

私は地方在住なので車での移動がメインになります。電車やバスも有りますが路線や運行本数が少ないので車の方が便利ですね。
