Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines - Original theme song

- This is the original theme song from the movie Those magnificent men in their flying machines, this film and two of its stars, Terry Thomas & Eric Sykes were the inspiration for the Muttley and Dastardly stop the pigeon cartoon series.
Terry Thomas & Eric Sykes also played the same characters in the film 'Monte carlo or bust' which inspired the wacky races cartoons.
Anyone else here because they saw this one like 30 years ago and the tune STILL jumps without any mercy to your brain and sticks there for a whole week at least?
I actually watched it like 55 years ago, but yes!
So true man. Watched it about 40 years back.I still remember count emilio ponticelli .
I actually heard it from a series of Winnie the Pooh YTPs called “Pinnie the Whoo” 😅
I'm only 19 in the first place but I love the film and song.
Happy days a classic, still makes you happy, brilliant
Just a great British film with a top quality cast ,it can't ever be repeated
My uncle had been an amateur pilot since he was a teenager in the 50's, he really loved ultralight/microlight planes in particular, which to me always looked like something out of a cartoon. When he passed away in 2011, this was his funeral song, it always makes me smile when I hear this song.
this is definitely the type of song you do NOT want to play at a funeral
Absolutely. My kinda bloke. This is the tune I want to be played as I'm loaded into the furnace as well
Он был Романтиком!
I believe my next-door neighbour had a minor pilot's licence of some description.
How to be a magnificent man in your flying machine.
- Own a Sopwith Camel
- Have a ruddy good mustache.
- Perform daring stuns, such as a loop
- Enchant all of the ladies with your charming wit
- Be a flying ace shooting down the damn Jerries!
Wojtek The Bear You treat a Sopwith Camel like you treat your lady: get inside 5 times a day and take her to heaven.
Richardsen Sqire reference?
TheNuggetThatCould
Indeed!
Richardsen Actually it's a Blackadder reference, referenced by the one and only Squire
Darjeeling of St. Gloriana
Thanks for the correction! I have heard nice things about Blackadder, I need to find sometime to watch it one day.
I love old movies like this one. It's odd I'm 18 but I love old movies and music kinda makes me not fit in but to hell with that
I'm 20 and also watch old movies and feel the same way.
The theme song for tier 1 arcade games in war thunder
I was just playing this to my friend while we were playing😂😂😂
Let at those boys fly!
When you see gladiators in a jet match
they're so fun to kill
Gunnar anderson I agree jets are fun to kill in biplanes
We had an engineering contest at work the other day involving paper airplanes.....this was the first song in my head that came to mind, haha. LOVED this movie as a kid:-)
+StormLaker1975 This will give you the edge in case such engineering contest takes places again: imgur.com/gallery/jhpLS
If wasn't for Squire, I wouldn't know about this... magnificent movie.
same here!
AlexSDU Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees
same
Good old Squire.
This film brings new meaning to "flying circus"
I remembered this movie as a kid, and of course this fantastic theme song! I think I taped it off the TV so I could sing it around the house all day! ^_^
Huge mid sixties comedy, a wealth of comic talent, highly enjoyable
A great theme song of one of those star-studded, big-budgeted, historically heightened spectacles you don't see on the big or small screen anymore, in today's hyper-digitized, video-gamed age. Thanks for reviving this!
What a fabulous tune.
I could listen to it all day long.
Blessings from Wolverhampton England to you all.
I will be listening to it all day. "They go up diddy up up they go down. . .
You could say it's a "magnificent" tune
This is my all time favourite film. Good theme tune, and great comedy.
Gert Fröbe as Colonel Manfred von Holstein. We will never forget him!
Even as Auric Goldfinger in 007’s Goldfinger!
“I expect you to die, Mr. Bond!”
Greetings from Germany!
I can remember my heavily pregnant mother, myself and my brother seeing this in the cinema all those years ago, and my mother laughing so much that she nearly went into labour! Luckily my sister was born without incident sometime later!
Did she become a pilot?Almost guaranteed!Thanks
A film that reminds us that technology that’s routinely seen nowadays was once something only daredevils attempted.
Look to the history of the car, and especially those who did the first cross country trips
Such an underrated movie, both as a comedy and an insight into the thinking of the nations involved at the time.
One of the catchiest songs I've ever heard. Best thing is, I saw the whole movie. It was magnificent...with those men and their flying machines. :3
Terry Thomas RIP , a thoroughly great man!!!!!
Up! Down! Flying arooooound, looping the loop and defying the groooounnnddd!
There! Oh, frightfully keen! Those maaagnificent men in their flyyyying machines!
They can fly upside down with their feet in the air! They dont think of the danger, they really dont care
I watched this with my father for the first time around 10 years ago and since then I've listened to this theme about a thousand times!
Whenever I have a crappy day or just feel down or angry I listen to this song and everything is cool
favorite moments are for Gert Frobe's scenes. I got the DVD and he improvised the bit where he made sounds with his mouth while marching and they kept it, and when reading the flying manual he said Step one: sit down, improvising and they kept it. then the scene where he is in the airplane while it's upside down and he walks on water it was not all stunt man, he did some of it
"Up, down, flying around! Looping the loop and defying the ground! They're all, Arthur!"
"Frightfully keen!"
"Those magnificent men, those magnificent men, those magnificent men in their flyyyyiiiing machiiiiiines!"
Great moment, or greatest moment?
BRILLIANT!
Yessssss
The lemon is in play....

This film and Blake Edwards' The Great Race (1965) were clear inspirations for two of my favourite cartoons; Wacky Races and Dastardly & Muttley In Their Magnificent Flying Machines.
...you missed "Those Daring Young Men in their Jaunty Jalopies," aka "Monte Carlo or Bust!", with the same producer, director, and most of the same cast; and Jimmy Durante with the theme song.
And of course "The Great Race" had the greatest pie fight in movie history. ua-cam.com/video/bWmH5FFgX44/v-deo.html
Rest in peace Eric Sykes.. Thanks for the memories!!
Quite simply the only thing to listen to whilst you blast Jerry out the sky in a good ol' spitfire
Probably a sopwith camel not a spitfire lol
"I don't care how many times they go up didley up they're still gits" Love Balckadder :P
Balckadder? What's that? Is it related to Blackadder?
@@jamesharding3459 It's just a typo you absolute knob, congratulations on being the first person in 8 years to feel like they need to ruin the fun by commenting on it I guess!

Saw this 5 times in one week, emigrating to Canada for the second time on the 'Empress Of Canada' this was mid-summer 1965.
One of 4 or 5 movies they played every day during the crossing.
Damn fine movie!
Soon as you hear this a smile comes to the face...........
One of the best film about the spirit of flying!
AND .......... this wonderful music
Lyrics:
Those magnificent men in their flying machines,
they go up tiddly up up,
they go down tiddly down down.
They enchant all the ladies and steal all the scenes,
with their up tiddly up up and
their down tiddly down down.
Up, down, flying around,
looping the loop and defying the ground.
They're all frightfully keen,
those magnificent men in their flying machines.
They can fly upside down with their feet in the air,
they don't think of danger, they really don't care.
Newton would think he had made a mistake,
to see those young men and the chances they take.
Those magnificent men in their flying machines,
they go up tiddly up up,
they go down tiddly down down.
They enchant all the ladies and steal all the scenes,
with their up tiddly up up and
their down tiddly down down.
Up, down, flying around,
looping the loop and defying the ground.
They're all frightfully keen,
those magnificent men in their flying machines.
Those magnificent men in their flying machines.

they go down tiddly down down.
Those magnificent men,
those magnificent men,

Fire the cannons! Yesssss.
I only saw the film last month but I instantly fell in love with it!
Great stuff!!
Fabulous film!! Terry Thomas at his best, god rest his soul.
At 0.5 speed, it sounds like a bunch of guys singing drunk in a bar after a victorious football match.
+NukeRocket Everything sounds drunk on 0.5 speed, test it out xD
How do you speed it up or slow it down?
+Marc Hess, Jr You know that button where you change the video quality?
It's there, above the video quality option.

Terry Thomas, The master of all cads and bounders
Delightful story. Stereotypes add a plus to make it a great and funny story. Good flying sequences. Great old planes.
A great film. I'm only 20, but was introduced to the film as a 6 year old and it has stuck with me ever since. I remember convincing my grade 5 class to watch it. I found it hilarious, but unfortunately not too many of my classmates seemed to overly enjoy it.
Purtroppo ciò che vola non interessa quasi a nessuno. Questo perche' forse non sanno sognare. Quindi non immaginano né creano..... Ciao.

A wonderful experience..watching the movie and living the fantasies !!! A salute to the great men and women..and the Air Machines which participated in the great epic :))
...Oberst Manfred von Holstein: "Number one: sit down."...hysterical!
Is it weird that I keep getting this song in my head whenever I see gameplay footage of Star Wars Squadrons?

My Dad has told me of his fond memory seeing this film at age 8 with his father in 1965
It’s been a catchy theme for over a half a century. It will still be catchy in a hundred more years.

The real magnificent film on magnificent men and their flying machines! Totally love it!!
The only thing I’ve got to say pity is that the advanced Japanese aeroplane with Yujiro Ishihara couldn’t make it even to the Dover Channel.
A great childhood memory since I watched it first as a little kid on a sunday afternoon on TV.So much fun.Thankyou for posting the song.
This song is an amazing joyous outburst.
I rember this movie from when I was just a kid, loved the song, loved the movie, still do. They just dont make them like that any more, too bad!
Actually, Joseph Hanna and William Barbera have stated that Jack Lemmon's "Professor Fate" in "The Great Race" (1965) was the inspiration for Dick Dastardly (and, incidentally Tony Curtis' "The Great Leslie" inspired Peter Perfect).
As a kid, I have seen the movie together with my cousin, on of the best afternoon in my life.
The work of a genius!
I could listen to this all day
SquireFlyer brought me here a while ago
+krystian hinz First heard it from Jingles, but it certainly fits Squire so incredibly well

True, but it was delightful to watch the national traits of the competitors, English, French, German, and a Japanese too.
I'd like to know where a DVD of this delightful movie can be bought in India.

"Those Magnificent Men..." is THIS tune for the movie (of the same name) about flying. "Markh5682" IS in fact correct: the car race movie is "Monte Carlo or Bust" everywhere but in the USA, where is was retitled "Those Daring Young Men...". Both the flying movie AND the car movie were comedies starring Terry Thomas and Eric Sykes. Both are family-friendly comedies worth seeing with a catchy theme song.
