    Anyone who grew up with Disney movies knows that they can get pretty dark, from Mufasa getting trampled to death in The Lion King to Quasimodo's mother being brutally killed in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Still, many of Disney's animated classics have had to soften or remove the more gruesome or depressing aspects of the fairy tales that they were based on. Make sure you let us know if we forgot any in the comments below! Here is Screen Rant's Dark Disney: Real Stories Behind Popular Disney Films.

    As an Austrian, I grew up with the dark stories of the Brothers Grimm. I'm not surprised at all.

    Peter Pan. In the original novel, Peter used to thin out the Lost Boys when they got too old or too large in number, often switching sides in battle and launching attacks on the Lost Boys, killing them in the process. Captain Hook was a lost boy who began a rebellion against Peter for his behaviour and to save his own life. He ended up getting his hand cut off in the process, hence the hook. In other words, in the novel, Captain Hook only wanted to stop Peter so that he and the Lost Boys could live in peace.

    Peter Pans original plot was actually holding the kids hostage till they grow up, then when they do grow up, he murdered the boys and set free the girls. Captain Hook was actually the first boy to escape, but not without losing a hand.

    In another version of Cinderella, Cinderella kills her stepmother by locking her in her bedroom and starving her to death, and in yet another version, she kills her stepmother by tying her hands together and snapping her neck by slamming the lid of a chest on it.

    You forgot the real ending of the Little Mermaid...She doesn't turn into sea foam...she is turned into a child of the air, who are spirits, able to earn a human soul after 300 years so they can go to heaven. During this time they must float through the houses that have children...for every bit of laughter of a child they hear, a year is removed from their sentence, but for every tear that falls, a day is added.

    It's also worth noting that in the original Little Mermaid, it was said that mermaids had no souls and after dissolving into sea-foam they would simply cease to exist with no chance for an afterlife. However, in Anderson's original ending, after dissolving into see foam, the mermaid awakens as a glowing spirit. Because her final act was so selfless, some divine powers took pity on her and gave her a chance to earn her own soul and then proceed to heaven.
    While not as upbeat as Disney's ending, it is more open and has a much stronger moral message.

      In the old times, horrible endings were made to make the moral of the story more understandable. But it was too traumatic, so luckily Disney came fixed that up.

    • @callie9427
      @callie9427 9 років тому +5

      yeah in one version she becomes a daughter of air which means that she's got to try and make children do good deeds or something for 300 years and every good thing a child does is a day or year (I can't remember) off the 300 years, but every time they do something bad she cries and every tear is a day/year added.

    • @janewoods4769
      @janewoods4769 9 років тому +7

      There may be some version out there that has that, but Hans Christian Anderson's story is the original story and in that version she kills herself instead of the prince and becomes sea foam.

    • @xCherryFizzlex
      @xCherryFizzlex 9 років тому +9

      +HayleeAndFamily You're right, that does happen! Hans Christian Andersen wrote two versions, basically the one was the unfinished story that circulated when he was still writing other stories (thats the one where she killed herself and turned to sea foam) and he left it like that for a while.
      But he wasn't happy with the ending and wanted something to give the children a "moral" to work from, so he added the daughters of the air. They see what happened to her and having pity for her because she was so selfless/loving and wanted a soul (earlier in the book her grandmother tells her humans have short lives but also eternal souls and mermaids don't, they live 300 years then turn into sea foam & disappear with no afterlife. She says she'd give all her 300 years of life if she could have one day as a human and an eternal soul) they give her a chance to earn her soul as a daughter of the air so she can live in Heaven. She has to get children to do good deeds for 300 years before she can get her soul. For every good child she finds doing good deeds, she smiles and a year is reduced for her 300 years, and every bad child she finds doing bad deeds will make her shed tears and add a year to it.
      So I guess he hoped the young children hearing the story would want to behave and do good things so the little mermaid could have a soul and make it to Heaven.

    I remember finding out about the classic Beauty and the Beast. In that version, Belle has two sisters who asked for jewelry, when her father asked Belle what she want he had to request multiple times until she said that she'll have two roses on a stem. He finds the first two requests with ease but he had to break into the beast's own place to get the roses. The father convinces the beast to let him go if Belle become his companion as payment next month, that time came and she moved into the beast's castle. In time they stayed in the same bed and eventually he asks her to marry him, she declines, he almost dies, and she saves him with crying on him. She accepts the proposal and they told her family to move in with them, the beast turns into his true form and the sisters gets mad drowning Belle for having such a handsome husband. Belle dies but the same witch who turned Prince Adam into the beast comes, brings Belle back, and turns her sisters into stones.

    In my family we have a story of a woman who falls in love with a kind generous man. She soon gets bored of him and ends up cheating on him. The love triangle continues as the first man tries to share her, but she soon decides to marry her 2nd lover. The first man says that because he can no longer be with her he will kill himself and the church bells will ring merrily when his soul has departed. In the end while on a cliff overlooking the town the woman and her fiancee were visiting she heard the church Bells ring merrily knowing he has killed himself. She in turn flings herself off the cliff so his soul won't be alone. In reality he never killed himself and the church bells were ringing for his marriage to another woman.

For example, the original version of Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault didn't include the huntsman at all. She was lured into her grandmother's bed naked and the wolf ate her (based on the French idiom "elle avoit vû le loup" (she has seen the wolf) meaning the girl has lost her virginity). Which is why Johnny Depp's wolf was so creepy in the movie.

    The original story of Pinocchio is even darker than only Jimmy Cricket's death or the things shown in the film. In the story, he's already a bully to his father when he's not even done being made. Then he walks away from home, got strung up to a tree by the fox and the cat, wants to return home but gets captured by a farmer, when he turns into a donkey he changes back by being eaten by a group of fish. But luckily it does have a happy end 👍

      It actually came a lot longer than this review mentions. H. C Andersen and his stories are from a time where people were far more devoted Christians than they are today. It is described that the merfolk did not have souls, and only by making a human fall in love with her could she share his soul beyond death. When she throws the knife away and becomes froth on the sea she sacrifces her chance of ever reaching heaven.
      I don't know if the subsequent softening is actually a part of the original; after she feels her body dissolve to froth, her mind joins that of other soulless wanderers who have been given a chance of coming into heaven. She has to wander for a number of years visiting households with children. When she meets a nice and polite child x number of years is gaken of her wandering, but for every naughty child x additional years are added.

    That is cool. I am familiar with these examples. The Little Mermaid gets her tongue cut out by the sea witch when she transforms. You didn't mention that part. The rest of that you got down right. In my opinion, the original Snow Queen is not much darker than the Disney version. The Disney version had dead parents, a dying sister, lethal ice powers, PTSD, attempted regicide. There is probably more. I still love Frozen, and find it suitable for children however.

In this, however, they characters aren't so much battling the antagonists, they're battling with their own fears and (on behalf of Anna) overcoming their naïve flaws (curse you, Hans, the only antagonist in this movie). Regarding Frozen, I really enjoyed it because of this despite all of the annoying publicity and children attempting to sing "Let it Go" day in and day out.

      It's an awesome book. The movie left out Gringoire - who is an hilarious failed playwright. In the book Frollo is the priest, and he has a stupid brother called Jean. Phoebus doesn't love Esmeralda - he gets sick of her after one night. Oh, and Quasimodo is deaf. I don't want to spoil any more.

    Hercules. In the real mythological story of Hercules he's a demi god. Because his father is Zeus and his mother is mortal, Hera the goddess of Marriage and family as well as the wife of Zeus, despises him. When he's an infant she sends 2 serpants into his and his brothers crib to attempt to kill him. Later on in life Hera played with his mind so that when he saw his wife and two children he murdered them and bash their heads in. After he tried to kill himself (though he failed.) in the end there's a happy ending but most of the story is pretty brutal

    • @niatanaya3434
      @niatanaya3434 9 років тому +2

      +MsUnicornbitch no, there's no happy ending. hercules remarried with deianira but one day deianira was tricked by a centaur. he told her to put centaur's blood on hercules's clothes so he will love her more than anyone else. one day hercules came back from a trip with a slave girl. then he told deianira to prepare his best clothes so she figured that hercules is getting married with the slave girl. she put the centaur's blood all over his clothes. turns out that hercules was going to Zeus's temple. that's why he wore his best clothes. after he wore the clothes, his skin burnt and he died. deianira was depressed and she hung herself.

    • @ShinKyuubi
      @ShinKyuubi 9 років тому +3

      +Bytional I'm American and I'll be the first to agree. The kids' books and stuff we get are pretty watered down and most don't find out about the real tales behind the Disney versions for years unless 1)They have the original and have read it before they seen the movie or 2)their parents want them to know where Disney got their story from before it was given the Disney treatment. Even Brave Little Toaster got the treatment but it was a bit different, the new stuff in the master's new home weren't evil at all and were actually rather helpful, but in the end the old appliances found a new home with a new master. So Disney actually added some darker elements to that one.

    Yes she jumps into the sea and turns to foam, but she also ascends as an ethereal spirit and told she can earn a real soul and then rise up into the Kingdom of God as a reward for her selflessness.
    Its actually a good moral story to teach to kids about being selfless... but lets just ignore the actual ending right just to make it sound worse then it really is.

  • @ChristmasCarolyn
    @ChristmasCarolyn 9 років тому +29

    Screen Rant! I have another dark one. PETER PAN by J.M. Barrie (novel version, not the play).
    In the original version, Peter Pan is not just mischievous; he's a downright narcissist, sadist, murderer, and rapist even. He likes to trick boys to come over to Neverland, and then subject them to near death experiences for "fun", sometimes killing them in the process. He also sends any Lost Boys to their deaths or murders them if they appear to be "growing up". He hates adults, especially mothers, to the point that he imagines killing them "as vindictively as fast as possible", because he doesn't like them ruining his fun. Yet, he himself would want a mother's love (selfish as he is). So in comes Wendy. When he gets Wendy to be mother of the Lost Boys, while they were alone, he raped her. He also continued to abduct all her female descendants to Never Land later on (obsessed with her, much??). As if that wasn't enough, if he was absent long enough from anyone, he would forget who they are, what happened to them or that they even existed! This means whatever wrongdoings he's done to any of the children he brought to Neverland is often wilfully wiped out of his memory!
    Tinker Bell is also way more vindictive in the original than depicted in the Disney version. She got one of the Lost Boys to shoot the "bird" down (Wendy) with an arrow and actually nearly got her killed when she fell from the sky. She showed no remorse for her actions and continued to torment Wendy by bullying, pinching and biting her throughout her stay in Neverland.
    Neverland is not entirely a happy place either, considering that deaths can occur, by pirates, the natives, or otherwise. Hook actually nearly succeeded in killing Peter by clawing him with his hook.
    Dark enough?

    The first Lion King can easily been seen as World War II. The whole story can be switched into the aspect of Scar being Hitler and the Hyenas the Nazi party. Theres other aspects of it that is really comparable. Most evidently when Scar is giving a huge speech to his army of Hyenas looking upon them and they are doing the goose-step in which all of the Nazi's marched in.
    Im not saying it's based off of WWII. I'm just saying, it's changed the way I look at the movie if you think about it.

      +TrolI Slayer The closest thing one could relate Lion King to would probably be Hamlet. Scar is the primary villain, with the desperate hungry Hyenas living in the dark thorny wilderness off from the African plains, where the noble hierarchical system of the circle of life, headed by our heroes, the lions, reside. And Scar's leadership of the hyenas is rather comparable to Hitler's fascist grasp on a downtrodden bitter Germany.
      Really though you could just as easily compare the early Star Wars movies to Nazi Germany too. A lot of movies hold the theme of fascism, of which Nazi Germany is seen as the face of. So an indirect association.

      +Nanashi Neko idk if they were the Grimm fairy tales but i grew up with similar dark stories about the princesses. I never saw the Disney versions till i was a teenager because i couldn't stand the books. Idk why but actual the original Thumbalina has always freaked me out, also i would always skip the last part of Cinderella, only read until she gets home from the ball, i think its because i have always had very sensitive feet so if i read about peaple cuting of their toes i would have nightmears about it.

    "Brutally killed"? l=/
    She got kicked like one time and died. What are you talking about? XD
    And it's kind of strange that people use dark as if darkness is scary, evil, or unnatural. But there's no need to be afraid of the dark, and it is not a negative or unnatural thing. I never could understand it why some people do that. =/
    This is just a philosophical thought, but if darkness has been around ever since the beginning of everything before anything else, is all around us, and there is even inside of us (I imagine it gets pretty dark inside of our bodies. I don't think we have light bulbs inside of us), isn't darkness one of the most natural and non-evil things out there? =o
    And night time is actually one of the most peaceful times for most people. It's when we rewind, recharge, and heal. Can't people just say what they mean? Could have easily said "grim" there, you know. l=/
    But there is nothing wrong with a little bit of seriousness and edginess. The world is not all silliness and giggles you know. Showing the hardships and some of the grim things helps prepare and teach people how to deal with and overcome hardships. If we continue to shield away from such things, it will raise us all to not be able to really handle hardships or bad things life throws our way. Plus those original stories sounded kind of awesome. l=D
