27 year TBI survivor here from a bad car wreck on 3/31/97... I was in the hospital for 26 days and Physical Therapy for 18 Months... I struggle with Repeating Myself,Poor Multitasking Skills,Poor Temper,Poor Short Term Memory etc... Post TBI I attempted and failed at several careers-( Special Education Teacher,Car Salesman,911 Radio Dispatcher)... A combination of dealing with my TBI issues,PTSD issues and Career Failures led to Increased Depression,Anxiety, and Suicidal Thoughts... I FINALLY have a somewhat decent quality of life... I FINALLY received SSDI-( Social Security Disability) Income after 15 years, 4 appeals and 3 attorneys... I now drive for a Car Dealership Part Time and Build Model Cars as a Hobby .. these activities bring meaning to my life, help me deal with my TBI and PTSD issues, and improve my self esteem..
Crying....I have all of these...it has been the worst year of my life and I am not having much hope.It is nice to know at least someone understands.Thank you for putting it into words.
On April 13, 1996, I was in a near fatal car accident on my way to prom. It was my junior/senior prom. I was in a Toyota Tercel when a suburban hit me on the drivers side. I sustained numerous broken bones from my skull to my pelvis. I was in the hospital for nearly three months. It took me months to be able to walk, talk or do anything remotely normal. I graduated with my class from high school and went straight to college where I earned my bachelor's degree in Natural Science with a specialty in physical therapy.
I got hit by two cars about 7 months ago and as a result I have lost my sense of smell totally and I now have short term memory loss also from the accident I broke my neck my upper back and both of my legs femurs (thigh bone) so now I've got rods in my back and my legs and it sucks really because not alot of people understand what it's like to almost die and then come back less of who you were before it all happened
Thank you. We are a small elite group of people and because of this it can often feel overwhelming and isolating. It is comforting to have these videos because an hour later I will have forgotten again.
I wished my family could understand what it's like to live with MTBI. Life had changed shortly after college graduation. Before my injury, I had huge dreams about my Carrier. It's very complicated to adjust with all the symptoms of this injury that I've now lived with for a little over a year. Thank you for sharing this video.
My son just went thru having Brain surgery last week and he's going thru some depression, loss of his right eye's peripheral vision, he has brain fog and is frustrated. He is 17 and isn't even able to drive or train to get his license. I'm here for him thank God. I thank God he is on the mend and doing well. God Bless everyone
I had a car accident when i was 18 and recovered but have some ailments (34 now). As silly as this sounds its good it happened when he was younger versus older as the brain and body are still circuiting and growing. Thank you for this video. My wife and I are new(ish) to this world, since her hemorrhagic stroke in October 2019. We often feel helpless but our friends have been amazing, and local resources, support groups and therapy courses have helped a lot.
Thank you Nathalie Kelly. I have suffered a TBI as a young adult. No one in my family, friends, Dr.s and other relatives alike truly understands the impact this has had on my higher cognitive and other executive functioning. I have tried to hide it out of deep sadness and almost a sense of shame since the time of my auto accident. When the incident occurred- I endured at minimum one hour loss of consiousness. Even though the maxillofacial injuries finally subsided after one year and the MRIs did not tell the Dr/s anything about my condition I have suffered fairly significant temporal lobe challenges for basically the last 20 years. Thank you for identifying this somewhat hidden post injury experience from the inside. I am neglected now by some family members due to sheer ignorance. I forgive their ignorance, but I am still very alone in this. Perhaps you or someone you know would refer me to someone.
Your experience of not being understood is so common. That is why I am making these videos! Some people send them to family and friends to explain themselves. Feel free to do that. This is a very hard road and you do not have to do it alone! I would seek out a support group for yourself and surround yourself with those who have been there and who understand you. This will require the courage for you to stop hiding it and speak the truth of your experience. Again, a support group is a safe place to practice that. There is no use for shame here. You did not do anything wrong! This is an opportunity to practice compassion for yourself. I am hoping to create an online TBI support group and if you sign up on my website www.TheTBICoach.com, I will let you know when I get that going. In the meantime, there are also lots of groups on Facebook that are wonderful! Best wishes, Nathalie

Oppressed Nolonger So u know what it's like! Finally someone! Mine was 15 yrs ago, & there's NO HELP. TBI doctors are hard to find. Psychiatrists & neurologists. So I'm stuck & don't have much time left!
What a great video, thank you! I had an injury myself and it really rocked my/our world. I'm very sensitive to noise, light, vibrations and i've lost my taste and smelling prwolness, LOL. After losing everything, I've come to see how people can take to you in a really bad way. I've always been there for my son and my parent's. I'm hurt, wowed and speechless at the nastiness my son and I are recieveing from my parents and i'm a grown man. She once told me in the begining of this year that she didn't give a shit about my accident and didn't care if it hurts and slapped my leg. I wanted to put her throught the wall, instead, I mentioned it to my father but he brushed it off. My son and I are working towards getting out of this hell soon, God willing. Be iuce to people.
My father had a TBI at aged 15. He was hit in the head and it fractured his skull. He’s 72 now. He has sufferered with depression and anxiety all his life. My brother and I were essentially neglected as my father couldn’t function regarding everyday tasks although still extremely intelligent . My father’s family thought my father was a waster and just lazy so not much assistance was given. I am so angry that not one of them made the connection between his condition and his brain injury and left us to suffer all our lives.
My brain injury was caused by electro convulsive treatment or shock treatment in a mental hospital for depression. I was in so much emotional pain I said yes to the treatment. I didn't know until 6 later it was a controlled brain injury. They did it to me 5 times and then they let me go. Many people are bullied into this. Please get the word out about this inhumane treatment.
I think you just did get the word out! Wow. I had heard that this treatment was safer now and more effective. I am so sorry. That is really sad. Depression is now seen as an inflammatory response by new research. I would look into reducing your inflamation, which you have if you have a TBI.
