The fact that Bono's father past away a day or two before this show . And can still perform like this is a testament to him and the band . Rock on forever
It was 10 days prior that Mr Hewson passed away.
@@wesleybyrd1816
It was ten days later that many more fathers, mothers, daughters and sons died...
As Wesley Byrd mentioned, this is incorrect. Bono's father died on the early morning of 21th of august 2001(and U2 still played later that night in London!). This Slane Castle concert was held on 1st of september. The reason a lot of people gets this mixed up is because U2 also played a concert at Slane on the 25 august, but during that one they played songs like A Sort Of Homecoming, Dancing in the Moonlight, Bad(with Coldplay - Yellow snippet!) and In A Little While - which was not played at this concert.
@@sodarkherhair78 And?
@@isaacdepaula2103 shes talking about 9/11. Still kinda an ass move to say that though. Scale does not dispose bonos grief man, shouldn't ever bring that card to the table
The most beautiful thing is the crowd without cellphones
U2 go home live from Slane Castle is the greatest live recording in the history of music.
I agree.
Not enough credit IMHO goes to Larry. That driving beat at the heart of every U2 song takes a monstrous amount of technique, skill, and energy. There is no part of this band that could be replaced. If one member were to depart, that would be it. The Beatles, Led Zep, U2. Every member is indispensable.
I agree. Its a huge amount of effort which can clearly be seen. Every member in this band is indispensable.
Most folk think Larry is U2. He's a fucking legend. Look at In Gods Country on R and H, the movie.
And, 'its all about the drums'
One of the things I loved most about seeing the special display for them at the RRHOF was the drumset Larry played at their very first gig. Stuff like that just gets me in my sweet spots. Special instruments that meant something to the band, or have historical value...
If Adam had quit in the early 80s like he had thought about, I don't think they would have split up back then, but now, they totally would split. That's why they are the kind of band who give equal writing credits to all of their members, nobody elevated above the other members. When it comes to the band, they are all technically equals.
Completely agree.
The Edge is seriously one of the coolest guitarists of all time. Love his unique sound so much. Happy St. Paddy everyone
I really wish they included the ending of All I Want is You leading to this song because it further drives home the emotion Bono put in to this performance.
Same! The video used to be up but I guess they took it down.
Yes! Thats the best part 🥺
I really miss it too...

Still love U2 in 2024❤
Chills. Every time. Still. After 20 years. Greatest gig u2 ever played. Unreal.
That's what Slane does with a band.
Wasn’t this the day after Bono had buried his Da? This is why this segue from “All I Want Is You” to “Where the Streets Have No Name” gets me emotional every damn time. ☺️
It’s like he’s singing to the Heavens...
...to Brendan.
...to his Da.
Gods rest his soul.✨
Yes brother!!!!Greetings from Greece!
@@fang_uk yeah. It was. Bono let his old man go that night. Then 10 days later the world changed.
2021 maravilloso 😍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🇨🇺🇺🇸
That transition to this from All I Want Is You was pretty magical
I could watch this 10,000 times and not have wasted one second of my life. This is it. This is my one song if I could only have one.
Best live version of the song by an astronomical unit
Escuchá la versión de u2 river 1998...
@damedge07 amazing version as well (the dc 1992 version is amazing too) but IMO the setting makes it even better ;)
Im sorry dud this is probably the best U2 version but the best of all time is the one by Muse in 2010 at Glastonbury. I've been a fan of both groups since i was 5 years olds and trust me, muse his the best live band of this century by far. When they invited the Edge to play on stage with them they pushed the song to a whole other limit. This performance still gives me chills 11 years later.
ua-cam.com/video/IbF9MPyRTHI/v-deo.html
@@mikac2002 i respect your choice and I agree that this version is a very good one as well… but I don’t think that a cover can be as good or even better than the real thing ;). Muse is an amazing live band but I don’t think it’s right to say that Streets’ best live performance comes from a band that’s not U2. Streets is my personal anthem and I’ve listened to pretty much all of the live performances available on UA-cam (not even exaggerating) and to me the setting of the song at that moment, place and context isn’t comparable to Muse’s performance at Glastonbury.
@@mikac2002 there's no reason, but you're muse's fan, to say that performance is better or take the song to other limit. I mean, i respect that is your personal taste, and you prefer it over the u2's live version. I just saying that muse's version is more flat, is right in the top the whole time, same the singer, screaming in one register the entirely song. It is an amazing performance, but when one put it side by side with another version to compare, the vision's fan has to disappear, otherwise the choice could probably be too subjective.
The band keeping time behind him to let him have his moment looking up to the sky is just beautiful -
Probably one of the best songs not only from U2 but globally.
Should have included the full performance of All I Want Is You leading into Streets
They have
The entire show is still on their channel by the way.
@@paulwood6263 If you're not aware of the context and background of this performance, I suggest you look into it. It'll explain the pure emotion that Bono puts into this.
@@TylerBaker1994 Well, it isn't anymore on U2's channel, I'm thinking WHY THEY DELETED IT? It was such a pleasure to watch this
@@igortokarski9517 probably because there rereleasing most of their hits on UA-cam every week.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the drummer. For example … 3:57. He’s back there carrying the beat like a boss. The band would just not be the same without him. He’s a huge talent. Just listen to the song and pay attention to what he is doing all the way through. It’s incredible.
Agreed. Larry spent a lot of time in marching bands as a kid which drives a lot of his technique - perfect example is the moment you highlight. Its fascinating and really impressive.
There are and were so much great bands on this planet but
U2 and Queen are the two G.O.A.T. is my opinion !!!
Solid❤❤❤❤
Le batteur c est Larry Mullen
One of the greatest song, live performance ever in the history of mankind. I've never seen magic like this before. Look at ocean of people. prefect live singing perfect music. 10/10 stars, this is what its called perfection, thanks to UA-cam we are witnessing one of the historical concert of greatest band in history The U2.
This is why it is so great. Hearing Bono call to his recently passed father and saying "It's Paul" and "See you soon, father" ....... just can't stop the tears.
I agree. This is the best live concert that I have seen of U2. The magic is definantly there.
22 years ago. Still one of the best and most emotional live performances I've never seen in my life. And I'm not a U2 fan, but this is amazing beyond your preferences. Objectively amazing.
I love everything about this. The way Bono's holding the mic, the Edge playing like a badass, and the moment the lights hit the crowd-just wow.
i get goose bumps every time i see this. amazing track from a great band.
God was in the room...The Father was there, I truly believe.❤❤
The only bad thing about being inside the Heart at this gig, and I mean THE ONLY thing, is that no gig could ever come close to it after. The perfect day, the perfect performance and arena for the lads!
At the beginning of "Streets"; hearing Bono call to his recently passed father and saying "It's Paul" ...... "See you soon, father" ......"Amen"..... just can't stop the tears.
I couldn't understand what he says. Thank you
5 seconds. It takes me 5 seconds to start crying, every damned time I watch this performance. It is perfection. Pure, sincere, raw perfection.
Same here.
I cry too 🥲🥲🥲🥲
Especially, when I hear The Edge's memorable opening guitar riff... 🥹🥹🥲🥲. That really pulls on my heartstrings... every time.
big same
In the beginning he cried out in a deep felt guttural voice much like I did after my own dad passed away. It was at his memorial prayer service....shook me to my core, and helped with an incredible build up of sadness and frustration of life being completely out of our control sometimes. It was a hard time for me.
Very haunting listening to Bono's delivery at the beginning. His dad had only died, and there's like some sort of release or acknowledgement of the pain just as the song is about to begin. This is what performance is. Raw and real.

You're right. It doesn't.
It does, separately. Its just magnificent together.
I agree. Their live show production is top notch. No one comes close. The way they segue between AIWIY into WTSHNN on the DVD is incredible. If you’re interested they released an EP available on iTunes with the two complete songs performed.
4:02 has to be one of the greatest moments in live music history.
This song is special, the gig is iconic, just pure happiness. Damn music just isn't the same these days.
No fucking technology or social media back when the song first came out. If you wanted to be a Tru artist one would have to work hard to receive that status. Today only performers not artist with technology making the music and the you post it to UA-cam the same day it was made.. There is a difference.between an artist and a performer.
What a drummer....!
What else to add?this is the GREATEST rock'n'roll song to be played live.Bono,Edge,Adam,Larry:thanks from the bottom of my heart for such a masterpiece
Hey U2, listen up your fans, publish it again with ALL I WANT IS YOU merging in WTSHNN!! This performance is amazing and you should preserve both together
There is not one thing about this clip that is short of phenomenal
In the transition from "All I Want Is You" to this song, you can hear Bono whispering words to his father who had just died a few days before this concert in U2's hometown.
,
I don't think a better concert has ever been put to film - this is still my dream venue to not only see a show, but to play a show. Just look at those seas of people. If there was one song to bring them all together, it's this one. The first time I ever got to see U2 play it live was during the Vertigo tour and truthfully, I had tears in my eyes. The themes are so universal and the boys just elevate the whole performance. Bono was on point this day, the whole DVD is impeccable. The one part they missed in this was the EPIC lead in from "All I Want Is You" where Bono vocally transitions to the this song, I get chills every time!
I was at this show, Slane is 10 miles from my home. As a venue for gigs Slane is awful, I shiuld know Ive seen Springsteen, U2, Bowie, GnR 's Queen and more at Slane. Awful place to get in and out of, sound is terrible too. But the day is ALWAYS great craic.
I was at the 1st gig, the dvd actually comprises of both gigs 25th August and September 1st 2001 and they are spliced together seamlessly by the director Hamish Hamilton who also directed the Boston gig in June prior! Both DVDs are works of art I've never seen a live concert captured on film as beautifully as he does it! Yes, a magical night I'll never forget, for anyone who has never had the privilege of being to Slane Castle it is a sight to behold, not just the historical castle itself but the land it sits on and the surrounding Boyne River Valley, it's breathtaking and knowing the history of the great battle that took place there really adds to the mystique! At night if takes on a new life with the castle illuminated.....as for U2 themselves, nothing much else I can say but EPIC!
Queen in Montreal '81 is the best live performance ever recorded, imho. But this one is a very close second :)
IMHO Zoo TV is the best U2 Concert ever
@@michaelderwin887 you are so lucky to have such a beautiful space and venue that close - I'm sure the shows all make up for the pains to get there! I also own the Chili Peppers and Bryan Adams concert DVDs that were put on there - the venue just brings something extra out of each artist and the people of Ireland amplify it all with their enthusiasm.
the most inspirational song ever
What I'd give to go back to see this show with this crowd (and no cell phones) 😍
It doesn't get any better than this.
I was there and can remember this song the most of the whole concert.. Hair stands on my neck every time I see this video..
Amazing. Tens of thousands of people and not a geopolitically world-altering terrorist attack in sight. Just living for the moment.
Can a band make a video of 5:30 length and put inside all the reasons that you love them for? Passion , love, happiness, courage, rock n' roll? YES THEY CAN! Love from Greece
I've never forgotten the first time I put this LP on my stereo with this such amazing big intro made for concert and always makes me the same feeling deeply in my body, two musical notes and done! I'm not here anymore I'm 14 years old the sound max alone in the house and I'm singing as in tour again again again!neighbourhoods kicked the wall! NEVER MIND IT'S U2 guys!! Do you ever feel something like this! I know I've already shared October Boy War the unforgettable fire but man girls....listen that!🙇🙇🙇💃💃💃🎸🎸🎸🎸👍✊✊✌✌Fan from 1982 from Paris 😆😜😚👏👏👏
WOW The Edge, you can tell he loves playing this song. Can’t imagine what the atmosphere was like seeing this live. This is music at it’s peak! Just amazing.
bono's dad died right before this concert. this was one of the most emotional performances i have ever watched
This is definitely my favourite version of Where the Streets Have No name!
The greatest 5 and a half minutes of humanity

Norway has A-ha, Germany has Scorpions, Rammstein, Sweden has ABBA, Roxette etc . etc...
One of the most powerful bands in history
19 years old. For some reason, this song particularly floods me with childhood memories, my dad played this and other rock music all the time. Reminds me of the great years growing up. Wish I could go see this live

This is amazing to read. I was your age when I went to see U2 on this tour. This stuff is timeless.
Me too man, same age as you. My dad played this all the time throughout my childhood and it immediately brings back memories from my youth. Wish I could see it live someday.

This is how music and lyrics should relay emotions. Pure beauty. As long as I live I will never get tired of this song!
I was stationed in the California High desert, 29 Palms when this album came out. It amazed and influenced all of us. Joshua Tree was just down the road.
Looking at the date when this was filmed, knowing now what happened 10 days later, and how this song helped America and the world heal at Superbowl 36, is very emotional. I want to live in a place where the streets have no name.
The passage from "All I want is you" to "Where the streets have no name" is, in my opinion, the highest peak of U2 live performances ever.
"It's Paul! It's Paul!"
I start crying my eyes out when I hear those words. Best version of this song ever.

I hated U2 with a passion in the 90s, then 19999 I met Marie, complete opposite to me, I was a raver, she was a rocker, you know, indie kid kinda vibe, and she loved U2. skip to 2001 and she bought me U2 live at Slane Castle, and we sat down to watch, and I fell in love with their music right there and then, a bit late to the party, and I still adore their music today, simply gorgeous music!
