An idea for a possible future video like this: As an amateur astrophotographer, I'm constantly keeping myself up to date on the latest forecasts. Obviously for good astrophotography we need to know the cloud-cover and we're affected by the 'atmospheric seeing' (essentially how wobbly the atmosphere is). When imaging the moon, you can literally see the effect the wobbly atmosphere has as it looks like viewing the moon through water. The video could explore the techniques to overcome the atmosphere seeing, why some areas are preferred for imaging compared to others, other atmospheric phenomena such as the Moondog or Moon halo, light pollution problems and how to overcome them etc.
Thank you for all of your fascinating content!@@metoffice - I would suggest a feature on Clear Air Turbulence, but perhaps not Aidan for the practical of this one!
After flying hang gliders for a good number of years in my 20s- 30s iid just like to say this is the best explanation I’ve seen for how we stayed in the air for up to hours on end. It was a pleasure to watch. I’m now in my sixties and no longer fly but sometimes hitch a ride with my son who has become a full time hang/paraglider pilot working in New Zealand and Switzerland.
Glider pilot and devoted met head here. UA-cam wasted no time in notifying me of this video! Great feature - the different types of lift were really well illustrated.
Happy to take you up in a hot air balloon. We use the differing wind directions at different heights to “steer”, but we need to avoid thermals. This video was really interesting, but more from a point of view of avoiding them rather than finding them. I have thought about doing an introduction to gliding course for this exact reason, so that I can learn how to avoid thermals.
Fantastic video. I'm an airline pilot and use your 10 day trend and deep dive videos regularly for building up a 'big picture' of what's going on. This video reminded me how fun gliding is, which is how a lot of us get into aviation! Aiden's presenting style works very well in this new format! Please keep doing them 😊
Nice 'clean' talk from both sides, forecaster and aviator 😀 Not trying to suggest I'm an 'old pilot'... (Mainly paragliding) but when I first registered with the MET Office I used to 'download' the METAR's, TAF's as well as F215 & F214's via FAX! Well over ten thousand hours airtime I still teach and rely on our MET Office Aviation Service (coupled with the 'Mk1 eyeball' of course) as my primary weather information source 😎 these days of course mobile internet (and a 12v powered printer!) let's students compare latest forecast updates with 'actuals' 👍👍👍
@@metoffice Rather a case of THANK YOU MET Office 😀 great forecasts (especially F215's) over the decades has saved me a fortune in fuel by knowing which hills/ridges to drive to! In the early 2000's I had my best 'unbroken run', managed about 14 or 15 months of flying on EVERY day I went out (hopefully!) to fly, before having a day where conditions proved unsuitable for paragliding! BTW I fly the only paragliders with UK Aircraft Registrations and ICAO callsigns 😎
I had an extremely rudimentary idea that gliders used thermals for lift, but found the explanation of that they were and how they were used very interesting. Excellent video. More like this would be good.
What a brilliant video. Gave me some very pleasant flashbacks. More videos like these please - how about some kite flying? How about a bit of an explainer about how pressure altitude affects passenger jets (especially coming home from ski resorts and not being able to bring back all the luggage). Or why different runways get used more often. Also sailing? Looking forward to more adventures.
As a kid many years ago I was in the Air Training Corps. We used to go gliding now and again. The pilots would sometimes take advantage of a local power station and circle in the rising air above the cooling towers.
Great video ! Second the idea of one on surfing and weather. I'm always amazed how the swell is affected by such distant storm systems but the waves themselves very much influenced by local weather. Would be so interesting to hear more about the science of surf !
you should do a tandem at paragliding. ive been paragliding over 10 years now and absolutly love it. Nice to see you explaining such sport with the weather.
A great idea, and really interesting. Thanks. You could try sailing as well as the weather is all important and its where I gained my interest in the weather and importantly, forecasting. Loads of aspects to discuss there I would say. Cheers 👋🇺🇦🇪🇺
FANTASTIC VIDEO AIDEN I WOULD REALLY REALLY LOVE TO SEE VIDEO'S LIKE THIS AGAIN I REALLY REALLY ENJOYED IT THANK YOU SO MUCH AIDEN & THE MET OFFICE 😁😁😁👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼.
Brilliant video. Pilot myself (not glider) so found this really interesting. More of the same please, would love to see more aviation or boating videos Thanks!
Excellent video, Aidan and a great idea to show how your work at the MO is used by others. As a suggestion for a future possible video (although nothing like as exhilarating as your glider trip) you could consider the work done by National Grid ESO for predicting gas and electricity demand GB-wide or - more local to you in Devon - National Grid Distribution planning for weather emergencies.
Excellent Aidan, I think gliding is the best form of flying and I was lucky enough to fly a glider solo before I could drive a car (shout out to the Air Cadets for that). Please try it again as you'll find the queasyness (sp) sorts itself out.
Go on Aidan I like watching you and the weather is brilliant and you find about it on UA-cam and I like the weather In It and It Is nice on do It Aidan
Alex ,Aiden ,awesome weather casters for looking into things that it wants to do? Question " could the weather be controlled? (or shouldn't we interfere) I think it can. by Sun and sea and oceans.fantastic gliding Aiden!
Great content, do keep the series going and just as a note the audio in the last part in the studio was not great, something to fix for next time but the rest was smashing.
Great video Aidan . If you ever go gliding again ( looks doubtful to be honest 😂) make sure you ask the pilot to fly the glider yourself, it will take you mind off feeling “dodgy”
Wow You lucky chap. For me- I am hoping that the scratchbuilt Radio Control plane I built over winnter will fly this Saturday(Spoiler I didn't use a plan, and had no Idea what I was doiung-BUT it looks like a plane and it's got all the bits needed- so I will let you know- and post a video of success or failiure whatever- it was fun to build over the winter whilst my wife went back to the Philippines for xmas)
Should have taken an aerobatic flight and pulled 5g’s. I did it once it was amazing, but I was so close to losing my lunch. Great content for fellow aviators, especially the noobs.
Why if you have a camera man and lots of kit are you play acting filming? I really like the Met office output and liked this episode too but found this a distraction.
I guess because Aidan couldn't fit the cameraman in the cockpit? 😁 (I imagine it was the most efficient way of filming both interviewer and interviewee without the need for time-consuming, repeated "takes".) Seriously, an excellent video. Informative, representative and easy to digest yet not "dumbed down". Graphics complemented the commentary nicely. Look forward to more of the same: - sailing - ballooning - hang gliding - RAF flight planning (fast jets!) - paragliding Thank you!
Excellent video! Prefer an engine in my plane personally - but Met office forecasts help me identify the (rare) days when the weather is going to be good enough to go flyin.g

Wonderful! Sounded like you'd got the Clangers on board lol
I have a variometer at home for this reason
Excellent new feature ... more of these please!
Thank you for the feedback :)
Thank you for all of your fascinating content!@@metoffice - I would suggest a feature on Clear Air Turbulence, but perhaps not Aidan for the practical of this one!
I'm so jealous of you Aidan, I've always wanted to do that 😃
Sailing boat next? Hot air balloon, maybe Annie in a jetpack?
As a sailor, these practice demonstrations of how weather forecasts are used , are really useful. Thank you
Glad you like them!

Looks great, your pilot loves using his middle finger absentmindedly.😂

Fantastic video Aidan. Loved that and what a great way advertising the gliding community as well science behind riding thermals. 🤛
Glad you enjoyed it!

That looked like so much fun. Well done Aidan and the team.
Fascinating application of weather forecasting - more please!
So exciting! Loved this - weather made real❤
Great video and well done Aidan for not throwing up.

Excellent. Many more activities to explore that rely on the weather. Looking forward to more of this.
I loved this! Great video!
Could you use a thermal imaging camera to find thermals?
Lovely video.
love the new feature :) EDs reaction was classic lolz :)
Great.Loved it.

Very interesting to see you take to the sky, looking forward to seeing more of this format.

Fabulous very interesting and keep them coming.

Absolutely fantastic video, really appreciate the effort from everyone in making this one 👍🏻
Amazing video - loved it 😍 Mountain Rescue would be interesting as weather reports are crucial for them
this is a good idea! more of this please! 😁 well done Aidan!!!!
Ooh love this! Your face at take off and landing was funny, but you were very composed considering! Think I would have screamed!! Well done you!
what a good video will done to Edd and friends and Aidan for being a good sport
A great idea, and really interesting. Thanks. You could try sailing as well as the weather is all important and its where I gained my interest in the weather and importantly, forecasting. Loads of aspects to discuss there I would say. Cheers 👋🇺🇦🇪🇺
Absolutely brilliant 👏 more of theses videos please😊

Wow.....exhilerating but very scary ...that take oiff😅😅😅😅. Great video Aiden 😊😊😊😊.More of these videos. Hot air balloon flight next perhaps?

This was great, featuring the skew-t graphs in the 10 day trends would be great too please :)

Great video Aidan!
Great to see something different 👏
That was brilliant to watch. And interesting t see the connection between map symbols and real life!
Really enjoyed that
Absolutely enjoyable!!! 🎉
Great stuff! The hangar looks as though it could well be a re-skinned WW1 building. If so, its a moderate rarity.....
This. Was. Brilliant. Thankyou 👍🏽
Fantastic views! Very interesting. Well done Aidan you kept really cool Im not sure I would!
This is fantastic
Go on Aidan I like watching you and the weather is brilliant and you find about it on UA-cam and I like the weather In It and It Is nice on do It Aidan
This was fascinating, thank you
That looked amazing to do great video👍
Absolutely brilliant! I’m guessing by the glorious weather(!) that it was filmed before July 2023? 😵💫
Actually, it was filmed in August ‘23. We got lucky with the weather, it was one of the few glorious days that month
Hahahahah this was fantastic!! Absolutely brilliant feature! Keep it up!
❤gliding.
Aidan’s face at take off 😂😮
Ha ha - genuine first timer reaction!
Very interesting ! Sailing next please.
I like this new feature
Great video Aidan . If you ever go gliding again ( looks doubtful to be honest 😂) make sure you ask the pilot to fly the glider yourself, it will take you mind off feeling “dodgy”
Ooooh paragliding next please 🎉
Theory into practice ! nice to see. Do you fancy trying a similar experience but this time, outside in the air? Try tandem hang gliding with us!
You're Flying Now
We all rely on people that go above and beyond.
Wow You lucky chap. Great video. Try a balloon next you will be surprised at the difference.
Paragliding next please
Should have taken an aerobatic flight and pulled 5g’s. I did it once it was amazing, but I was so close to losing my lunch. Great content for fellow aviators, especially the noobs.
You should come and do a tandem paragliding flight.
Then you REALLY feel the thermals
A braver man than I! It looked great though 😊
It's a great experience, does take you out of your comfort zone, but well worth it
How about a cycling trip, planning a route taking in weather on the day and things to be wary of, squalls etc?
Well done Aidan, are you going to do it again? 😊
Surely sailing next
Or maybe the connection between the weather and surfing
Excellent ideas
LOVE IT ❤❤❤❤❤❤
We can sort you out on a tandem paraglider as well.
Maybe feature some American storm chasers,. Reed Timmer, Mike Olbinski, Aaron Jayjack, Vince Waelti or Kip Metcalf, to name but a few.
That was cool
Something different wow
I want to like this one! But no button ...
where's the like button????
The big question… Will Aidan go gliding again?
Several comments on sailing, I was going to offer to take you out..
May I suggest a hot air balloon flight in 2024.
Will you be going up again? If you do, you need a "beanie" hat for the sun and it takes a while before your stomach acclimatises...
Would love to go up again!
Why if you have a camera man and lots of kit are you play acting filming? I really like the Met office output and liked this episode too but found this a distraction.

Seriously, an excellent video. Informative, representative and easy to digest yet not "dumbed down". Graphics complemented the commentary nicely. Look forward to more of the same:
- sailing
- ballooning
- hang gliding
- RAF flight planning (fast jets!)
- paragliding
Thank you!
This was a great video BUT please the shots showing the camera man and Aiden holding cameras is very yesterday, not trendy and looks horrible
Disappointingly poor lookout...
Excellent video! Prefer an engine in my plane personally - but Met office forecasts help me identify the (rare) days when the weather is going to be good enough to go flyin.g
