My favorite part is the pacing shot. Lots of red power on display here, I like it! Those SD40-2s were new in '74.....Rock Island's ultimate locomotives.
Hi Jim - I have always enjoyed pacing shots of locomotives and may have to weave more of them into future videos. The SD40-2s really were beautiful locomotives. Thank you very much for watching the video and I appreciate your comments. Mike
My God what a wonderful video, 9000 horsepower of Rock Island power streaking across the plains! Mike, I am amazed by this wonderful layout every time see it. I could sit and watch your videos all day.
Thanks for posting another great video. I liked the shot of the locomotives passing by the switcher, nice work. It is always enjoyable to see trains passing through your amazing layout. -Tom
Love the SD40-2s Mike, I grew up on the Big 4 Dow Line from Anderson Indiana to NYCs big yard in Elkhart Indiana via Marion Indiana and I fell in love with Conrails SD40-2s and SD45s in heavy freight, coal and grain train service!!! I tip my hat to you on the details and weathering on those beauty's!!!!!!
Thanks again Mike for another great post. I'm an ALCO-HOLIC at heart, but when it comes to SDs, the 40-2s just does it for me. Must be that long back porch. Take care and be safe.
The placement of the speeder next to the signal looks rather precarious! I've seen dozens and dozens of photos of Rock Island trains from the 60s and 70s and one of things that often stands out is you would never see the same paint scheme on every locomotive in a freight consist, one of the quirky qualities of this particular railroad! Cool video. That red and yellow scheme sure looked nice on SD40-2s!
You are correct in that it was common on the Rock Island to have multi-colored locomotives in a consist ...... often pretty grungy looking! Motor car set-offs near signals and dispatcher phone boxes were very common. The set-offs leaned away from the main track (to keep the motor car from inadvertently rolling toward the main track) and had hefty stops on the backside to keep the motor car from rolling away and down an embankment. Thanks so much for watching and for your comments! Mike
That was a great video! Quite a lay-out and very prototypical with modern running too...well, maybe not so many caboose cars but other wise a fun video. Cheers now!
Beautiful video. The pacing part is great. We talk a lot about “weathering.” It’s not alway weather related discoloration of the livery. You illustrate this perfectly with the exhaust suet. In the late 70’s and 80’s something happened within the railroad mechanical departments. They changed oils. I don’t know what that change was, but the result was unburned oil being expelled out the exhaust stack. Sometimes severely and completely coving the engine cowling, walkway and safety appliances.
Always enjoy your videos. I'm sure because you model Rock Island, you are aware of the Rock Island short line in Mississippi. I just watched some videos about it a couple of weeks go. Not sure if they have any units in the red/yellow scheme but they have them in the blue/white scheme. Long live THE ROCK!
The Rock Island short line in Mississippi does have a GE locomotive painted in the red/yellow scheme ...... really nice looking. Thank you very much for watching and commenting. Mike
wow, those SD40's looking beautiful and add in the sound with 1080p and my big monitor and I get lost in this, that pacing shot gives me an experience I never got to see as a kid. just amazing work. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Rob
Another superb video! Are those BLI or Athearn -2s? Those are some sharp units. Also, who makes the cryo tank car? I've not seen one before. Thanks for posting these great vids. Regards!
The locomotives are InterMountain models released a few years ago. The cryogenic tank car is a Broadway Limited model. Thank you very much for watching and for your kind comments! Mike
I model the 1964 - 1974 era of the Rock Island. The blue scheme was introduced in 1975; therefore, it is just outside of my time period. I don't have any plans to operate blue scheme equipment on my layout, but I have nothing against the blue livery. Thank you for watching and for your question. Mike

Thank you, John. The SD40-2s are a graceful looking locomotive. I appreciate your comments! Mike

Gorgeous SD40-2s, guessing they're ScaleTrains? Nice weathering too. Also liked that switcher earlier in the video. John

There's not enough oil leaking out of those engines 🤣
You could always count on the Rock Island having grimy looking locomotives. Thanks for watching! Mike
Kind of a odd question but what is your opinion on the rock island’s blue livery and will we ever see it on the layout?
