My man , you are the Thom Hartman of jazz records commentary and keep up the fine work professor ! Love Chico Hamilton's stellar lineups that included Gabor Szabo and the great Charles Lloyd who is still giving us the gift of his wonderful music .
I watch alot of VC videos, this is an absolutely eye opening look at your deep Jazz knowledge. Will definitely keep an eye out for these records. Thank you!
One of the(many) joys of your presentations is getting the opportunity to admire the great artwork of the album covers. This was the first time I've seen the cover for "Liberian Suite".Incredible!
@@TheJazzShepherd You're doing a good job! I myself am a huge Miles Davis fan and of the seventies Fusion period. Mostly Tony Williams Lifetime, Mahavishnu, Larry Coryell and of course the other great legends. But I also do enjoy the 50s and 60s jazz of course. Keep up the good work!
I'm glad that you stress the importance of the entire band, particularly Bill Evans,on the making of "Kind of Blue" A Great record may have a big name, but all involved play huge roles
@@TheJazzShepherd True, they were overshadowed by future editions (with Morgan,Timmons,Shorter,Hubbard, etc.) But this group w.McLean,Hardman,De Brest,Dockery swung their asses off!! Just check out "My Heart Stood Still " from the "Hard Bop" lp. Smokin'!!!!
Such a fantastic & fluid run-down of some great titles to explore with historic context interlaced - impressive and super fun to watch. Thank you for all the amazing content you continue to provide.
This is great , i recently picked up Mulligan vs Getz , Motor city scene, and Eddie Harris "Here comes the judge" on last one there is no line up info any details?
@@AsTheTableTurns lol, no. I'm in the UK and buy from them direct, I will be placing an order with Acoustic Sounds though this weekend, they have it in stock so have it amongst a few others on my wishlist ready. :)
@@simonossitt2541 Ah, okay. But from what I've seen Pure Pleasure has a lot of other great restocks that Acoustic Sounds and other retailers don't have yet. So, I don't feel too bad for you since you have great access to some amazing titles. Haha!
You certainly know your stuff Dan , really informative and entertaining and thanks for a great shout out to Brubeck and Desmond. So under valued these days.
I've thought about the decline of album cover artwork from the 70's thru the present.I think it is largely a result of the giant corporate influence, and less independence for the artists and photographers.
Love your sentiments on Mulligan. I don’t know if being a tall, lanky, ginger hurt his mass appeal or what, but I think he doesn’t get enough credit. Miles Davis is a household name and Chet Baker has this cult following, while Mulligan’s rarely talked about. On top of being an incredible player and band leader, as you mentioned, he was a premier arranger. He’s up there with Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson, and John Lewis for me, and I appreciate you giving him his due!
That's a really neat label with Paul Whiteman that you showed at the start. There are so many great names that came out of that orchestra, not to mention that they were the band that premiered Rhapsody In Blue. And further on your comments about the risk of showing black artists... I saw a documentary a while back that stressed that Whiteman really mainstreamed a lot of early jazz because of his name. Many white Americans at the time wanted to hear from the "white man" orchestra leader before anyone else.
Argo episode PLEASE!!! Love the label and Ahmad Jamal was the artist that introduced me to jazz with one of his live records. Now I've got a few more than 20 Argo/Cadet records, they can mostly be found for dirt cheap and are generally fantastic
@@TheJazzShepherd I just scored a reissue copy of that lovely Pinky Winters LP that's been so hard to find for so long. About $50 shipped but the only other option was over $100 so I'm super excited for it to get here tomorrow
Fantastic episode, Dan
Very informative as usual

Thank you as always for your education, I learn so much from you and I have been in this for 20 yrs, you are a jazz educator
I appreciate that man, thanx for the kind words
The pianist on the Messengers "Hard Bop" lp was Camden's own Sam Dockery.Spanky De Brest from Philly was the bassist.
i get those 2 mixed up at times... maybe the least famous Jazz Messengers\?

Yes, Gerry Mulligan is the composer of the cool. Thank you!

Yeah..Mulligan is sadly very overlloked.
He was valued.more at the time it seems
Thnx for watching
The history is incredible
Yep, on Blue in Green, Miles simply gave him a key to write something in and Evans made this masterpiece.
"Those Scandinavians have an extra layer of Caucasian on them" Haha!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol.. All in good fun
Mulligan and Pepper Adams were the big white players.
Time Out is in the animated movie “Sing”. It’s bigger than any other jazz song.

I know this is off topic but how do you think Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane stack up next to each other?
boy both are brilliant...for some very different reasons!!
Love Tranes spirit..... love Sonny's secular n fun stylings
@@TheJazzShepherd Do you think Sonny was pushing the boundaries before Coltrane was?
OscarBrown Jr. - Mr. Kicks! One of the hippest vocal performances ever.
One of coolest cats ever
Do you think Columbia took risks because of John H. Hammond II?
THATS A GREAT QUESTION, i AM NOT SURE...BUT PROBABLY HE PLAYEDF A ROLE

yea I had it right to begin with....
I’m not a Prince fan. He’s good but on a superficial level.
yup well said
