Some of the great hidden gems, of this era were recorded by Bill Grauer and Orrin Keepnews~

Excellent selection, Jazz Shepherd. Riverside had a lot of great covers and some gorgeous colour photography. Love the cover of Bobby Timmons This Here and Rollins’ Freedom Suite. Would love to hear a run down of your personal favourite musicians on each instrument.

Watched this video from a year ago last night. Having never been irritated enough to consider responding to a You Tube video comment I was surprised at Dan/Jazz Shepherd's suggestion that George Russell was a "white cat". I believe his mother was African American and he was brought up steeped in the African American church and culture and educated at a HBCU. He was indeed a Black American composer.

yes my mistake.... but in my defense ..take a look at all his lp photos from the 50s... Decca n RCA did everything they could to make him appear white... ( A common thing in that era sadly)

Hey dan long time no see. Been off the grid for a bit. Love your riverside rundown showing your dj skills and monologue. Your description of that chet album is visually great. I'll remember that noir scene everytime i play it. Just found a great analogue productions copy of that. It kills me when i see the prices of these riversides. I had them all at one point. Economics forced me to sell them years ago. Riverside is my favorite label even more so than blue note in many instances. Don friedman was an extraordinary pianist and played with many progressive and innovative artists. He used to hang out with scott lafaro, charles lloyd, billy higgins in los angeles in the early sixties. I think george russell was actually african american but very light. Love all his early decca albums: in kansas city, jazz in the space age etc. Ezzthetics is killer as is stratusphunk etc...some other great riversides are the trio with walter norris, blue mitchell's cupbearers with junior cook, sonny red images, clifford jordan starting time, grant green the mode and many more. Thanks again dan for an interesting journey!!

You keep talking about being able to show us dozens of Riverside/Prestige titles we probably never heard of and I'd love a series like that. You could makes videos per label like you've been doing but with less known selections and on top of that choosing a top 10+ with your favourites from that bunch.

@@TheJazzShepherd I will! Btw, Circle Waltz... oh man, what an album! I'm a huuuge Evans fan and it's like hearing one of his trios with different names and a much better sound than Van Gelder's piano. As soon as I heard those first piano notes I thought "This is definitely not a Van Gelder recording" and I was right. Ray Fowler did that one and the sound is so clear and realistic. Probably my favourite recommendation from the video.
