      I heard ya about getting hooked on opal, they really are the most wonderful mineraloid. I've taken to faster methods with the cutting but the hand cutting keeps you honest, lol. Thanks so much for watching, cheers!

      Thank you! I think I could watch someone polishing opal all day...oh wait, I do, lol! I love Pulitzer Opal, Roy's Rocks, and Justin from Black Opal Direct for binge watching Opal polishing. Yep, it's a thing! Thanks for watching!

      @@OzoneFineArtVentures those are my favorite!!! That's actually how I found your videos!!!! I was working on some of my grandpa's opals and one of them crazed. I found and opal, a little smaller than a ping pong ball. I didn't want to kill it so I binge watched Justin's, Pulitzer (he is hilarious) and yours. I ended up killing the opal though. It had a leaf in the middle, so when I started to polish it, it just blew up😒. I kept a the pieces so I could make a inlayed ring. Opals re tricky little things lol. Yours are incredible! You are so talented

      Thank you, Kurt! It's so fun dancing with the opal, even when it has little cracks like this one did. I was able to save it with that cut job. I hope you're having success with your opal adventures too! Thank you for watching.

      Like hanging off of a high precipice to get to the inner sanctum of a seam? Hmmmm, this is pretty fun; even with the mess and the heartache of breaks. The end result always has you wondering about the intense splendor of nature. Thank you for watching.

    Is there a certain dremel you recommend for using with water? I’m scared to get my super cheap plug in one around water hah. Very nice opal!

    • @OzoneFineArtVentures
      @OzoneFineArtVentures  3 роки тому +1

      Yep, you totally want to make sure you have a flex shaft that attaches to your motor to keep that motor away from the water for obvious reasons. You can see what a mess the whole thing is too. This one here is a Dremel and it's a crazy good workhorse; the flex shaft/bearings/handpiece have out lasted 3 Dremel motors! I think they are only for use with Dremel, though. I believe Chicago has a flex shaft and someone was talking about yet another one that I thought had more universal mounting. I don't use my Foredom because I have a spendy handpiece for it but you could go that route too of course. Thanks for watching!

      @@OzoneFineArtVentures No I haven’t worked with any opal. I am one of the grey haired clan who have come back into the hobby in retirement.

      Hi Caleb, I'm not sure if I'm following the problem that you're having. The color bars can be really wiggly and uneven in boulder opal, did you polish past the color bar maybe? I'd be happy to help if I can, cheers!

    I have huge pieces like that and some are chalky blue and white. Do you know what it would be? Ty

    • @OzoneFineArtVentures
      @OzoneFineArtVentures  Рік тому

      Hi Mandy, it sounds like you have some potentially lovely material. It's hard for me to know what it is without seeing it. Knowing where it is from also helps a bunch with identifying a gem or mineral. There are some tests you can preform; hardness test, scratch test, with household items that can also help you make an identification. I hope that helps and thanks for watching! Cheers!

    Do you do all of your smaller pieces using a dremel and rock saw? I'm super limited on space so I can't set up my big machines. If so I want to get a set up

    • @OzoneFineArtVentures
      @OzoneFineArtVentures  3 роки тому +2

      I've done plenty of the Boulder Opals and free form polishing and carvings (like the Blue-Green Jasper, Obsidian, and Sunstones) that way. I would highly recommend that route if you're limited on space. I like it because it's totally mobile. I can work inside, outside, on the road, whatever. It looks like I should maybe make a 'set-up' video since both you and Chris are asking about it here. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about specifics as well.

      @@OzoneFineArtVentures I would absolutely love to see your set up! I love the lapidary aspect of rockhounding but I haven't found a good solution. I tried a hand held sander and it only worked on one speed. It didn't work, myocks went flying everywhere and I tried to hold it in between my knees. It was pretty comical! I saw someone use a tile saw. Is that what you use to cut the rocks. I would love to get back into cabbing. All of yours are such a work of art

    What bits do you use?

    • @OzoneFineArtVentures
      @OzoneFineArtVentures  7 місяців тому

      Hi, I usually start with a 180 or 240 diamond sintered bit to remove what needs to go. Then I progress through the grits of the Nova points (standard 4 point set). I then apply either 8,000 diamond, cerium oxide, or even 14,000 diamond just depending on how the stone is reacting. Let me know if you have any more questions, cheers and thanks for watching!
