    After a good amount of research, you just decided it for me. This truly does seem to be the best value for money when it comes to fast ultra-wide angle aps-c primes. Looking forward to using this for landscapes with that glorious corner-to-corner sharpness, all while not having to sell a kidney. Cheers for the review, Dustin!

    great review. This lens is wonderful, I use it with a BMPCC and I love it.
    Really nice key light and background, Dustin, I would like to see a hair light, too, it would make the portrait of you complete and more pleasant to the eye.

    REALLY GLAD you mentioned how the focus goes past infinity. Because when I first got it, and started shooting (x-t2) I was getting blurry photos and wondering what I did wrong. Well, I wasn't doing anything wrong. But when you mentioned that hiccup, it made sense and now all is right.

    I had this lens for my Fujifilm X-T1, and it was amazing. No I have the Samsung NX1, and I'm waiting for this lens for that camera. Really looking forward to using it again, and excited to see how it performs at f/2 with the 28 megapixel sensor of the NX1. This lens is truly stellar. But like you said, the stars it makes isn't very interesting. It has only 6 blades, but some of the newer lenses from Samyang has 9 blades which helps a lot on the stars, I with this had that as well.

      Dear Dustin, just to be sure, the infinity focus stops before the hard stop, so that means at the beginiing of the "L" symbol?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому +1

      Matthieu Milhaud
      There can be a tiny bit of variance per copy (this allows for some adjustment due to weather conditions). It is best to just find out where infinity comes on your copy by magnifying the image and visually verifying accurate infinity focus on your copy.

      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 років тому

      Good tip. Thanks for the info. I have a chip that I've added to the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 that you can program with most of the correct data, but no such chip seems to exist for the EOS M mount yet.

    Enjoyed your review on this 12mm a few times. This weekend on Amazon, the price is down to $228 NEW ... and so I sit here pondering should I order !! Just spent a hunk on the RF 50mm, otherwise would have ordered already !!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому

      If you want a quality wide angle prime that's very compact for your mirrorless camera, it's a definite bargain. I'm sure you probably know this, but it won't mount on your EOS R. It will only work on an EOS M camera (or Sony, Fuji, etc...)

    You are making me very tempted to order one..
    This lens and Canon 22mm could be a stellar lightweight kit. Maybe I sell my EF-M 18-55mm(to justify the purchase :P) and get this to cover the wide-angle and keep the 22mm as all around lens.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 років тому

      I don't know how big the market is for the 18-55, but it is really a very competent lens. The EOS M has few lenses available, but at least they are good ones!

  • @DustinAbbottTWI
    @DustinAbbottTWI  9 років тому

    adrian alonso N - the d7200 is a crop sensor camera, but not mirrorless. This is lens is only for mirrorless bodies, and there isn't a Nikon mount.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 років тому

      ***** Any fixed length lens is a prime lens. The Rokinon would not work on your T3i; it is designed for mirrorless bodies and isn't offered in an EF-S mount.

  • @ChamithSiriwardena0

    Thanks for the review. There's another Rokinon/Samyang lens you may want to review which is 8mm f/2.8 Fisheye. I've been using it for a while with the EOS M and I love it. IMO IQ of it is better than it's big brother 8mm f/3.5 for EF.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Dustin Abbott Yeah, that's why I have several of them, and why I went mirrorless :)

  • @saneeshlakers
    @saneeshlakers 6 років тому

    I just bought Samyang 12mm f/2 NCS for using with Nex 3N E-mount Mirrorless Camera But upgrading to Sony A6000 or A6300 because manual focus will be better with View Finder, also A6000 and A6300 Got 920k Dot Screen comparing to 460k dot screen of Nex 3N . Even with Nex 3N i am getting good sharp images but hoping that it will be more better with A6000 or A6300 View Finder.
    For indian Market great wide angle lens to buy with 25000/- Indian rupees from Amazon Rokinon is 32000/- INR. All most all other wide angle lenses below 14mm Crosses 30000/- INR. Quality is also good as it is a fixed focal length lens. Only downside can be that the lens is Manual operation but when you check prices of other wide angle lenses you will naturally excel in manual focusing :). Gr8 lens for Architectural and Interior Photography for reasonable price.

    Hi Dustin,
    Thanks for recommending the Canon 55-200mm for my M50 in one of your other videos, I purchased one and love it. I would like to know If you would recommend the Canon 11-22 or the Samyang 12mm if you already have the 22mm Pancake? Thank you.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 років тому +1

      That depends on your tolerance for manual focus and whether or not you plan to shoot astro. The Samyang is a great astro lens and obviously has a big maximum aperture advantage. The Canon has a lot of its own advantages, though, from autofocus to a zoom range to image stabilization.

    What a great review. I have the EOSM as well and like to a lot of landscape/nightscape/star trails. Would you have any thoughts on how the Rokinon 10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS Lens for Canon EF-M Mount might compare to the lens you reviewed for those situations? The f/2 is tempting with the 12mm - but I am not sure how much 'wider' that 2mm difference makes the 10mm. Going to purchase one here in the next day or two and I am pretty sold on the 12mm you reviewed. Definitely want to get more of a wide angle to my night shots than the stock 22mm f/2 gives me and it looks like these two lenses are within 30ish bucks of each other.
    I really do love nightscapes/astrophotography though, so want to make the best choice for my money/desires.

    Thanks for the video, Dustin! I've had trouble finding video reviews of this lens and I was/am very interested in it. Question: I just bought my Sony A6000 and only have the 16-50mm f3.5~5.6 kit lens (yes, I am very much a beginner in photography haha). Would you say this Rokinon lens would blow the one I have out of the water? Would I be amazed by it? I understand it's kind of a subjective question, I really like wide angle photos though. Thank you very much and great job!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 років тому

      Rogerio, first of all, I don't have direct experience with the lens you are talking about. I do have a lot of experience with lenses in general, however, and I believe the optical performance of this lens is going to be superior to most all zoom lenses. The focal length is fabulous (particularly in Sony E-Mount).

    I know that this is an old video and I have been shooting with the 12mm Rokinon f/2 lens on my A6500 and A6400 for a long time. However, what has prompted me to post this is that I have recently purchased an A7iii and will be shooting with the A6400 and the A7iii in tandem (will be selling the A6500).
    This little lens on the A6400 will give me an equivalent 18mm f/2.0 (I don't consider the crop factor in the aperture since I don't ever try for shallow DOF with this lens). The 18mm f/2.0 equivalent will be a nice wide angle adjunct to the 28-75mm Tamron f/2.8 which I plan to use as my primary lens on the A7iii).

      You’ll only be able to use the lens in crop mode as it won’t fully cover the full frame image circle.

    you can't shoot at f/2 as this lens supports for aps-c format ( so you should multiply the aperture by crop factor of your camera to get real aperture eg: f: 2 x 1.4 ( for the 1.4 crop factor camera)

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 років тому +2

      That's only true for depth of field; the aperture is still f/2 (that is the physical size of the maximum aperture). It lets in as much light here as f/2 will on full frame. The crop of the sensor means that depth of field isn't as shallow as f/2 on a full frame.

    Are you saying that if I move around actors talking to each other, while the lens is attached to a cam on a stabilizer, I should not worry too much about the focus as long as I don't move too much away or toward the subjects?

      I never encountered a vignetting issue at all. The flange surrounding the front element is quite a bit wider than the front element, so that doesn't seem like it should be an issue. I definitely stacked a couple without issue.

      Whether or not it matters is up to you. For me it does - mostly because I'm trying to make objective observations about image sharpness and giving feedback, and guessing the aperture or trying to draw it up from memory is a pain.

    Hi Dustin. First let me say your reviews have help me immensely in my final decision to purchase my Rokinon lenses. I was testing these lenses for sharpness using testing charts. I was happy to see I received good copies. Now to my question. I was shooting and saving as jpeg and raw and to my astonishment every jpeg was sharp and every raw file was more than slightly out of focus. I don't shoot raw so this was my first experience looking at raw files. I couldn't image this was caused by the lens and to prove that I used the Sony kit lens and had the same results. Is this normal?Bill

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 років тому

      The focus should be the same (they are the same image). The RAW file will require sharpening and perhaps a contrast boost, but it will not be out of focus.

    • @gpnmoab1
      @gpnmoab1 7 років тому +2

      False alarm.... I opened the files using the Sony "Play Memories Home" application that came with my A6000. Apparently it does not read the RAW files correctly. I opened the RAW files in Capture One and they are actually sharper than the jpgs out of the camera. Thank you for the very fast reply. Keep up the great reviews!
