Firing a Manual Kiln with a Kiln Sitter

- This is how I fire my school's manual kiln. I'm not responsible for what happens when you fire your kiln, though! Always use a cone pack to monitor what the actual temperature in your kiln was, and never leave a firing kiln unattended!
You tought me more in the last 6 min then I did with my degree in this! They didn't show me how to fire at all!!! I have 5 kilns I got from my great Grandma and didn't know how to use them! Thank you for making it simple and walking me through all of the steps!!!!
I guess it is kinda off topic but do anyone know a good place to watch newly released movies online ?
I had no idea how to operate my school kiln and the manual was so overwhelming- THANK YOU!!
THANK YOU so much for making this video!!! I inherited a kiln over the summer that I’ve been rehabbing, and I’m getting ready to do my first firing in it but I had no idea how cones work. This was exactly what I needed!!!
This has been the most helpful video I’ve found!
great vid! whats the name of the metal posts that hold the cone? for some reason mine have gone missing thx!
what cone do you use for bisque firing and then what cone for glaze firing?
06 and then 6
where did you get those peep hole plugs?
You did a wonderful job explaining how to use a manual kiln! I believe I have the same one and I’ve been too scared to use it so I’ve been using my mini kiln and this one has been sitting in my basement lol. I’m going to fire it up today!
I'm just setting up my own home pottery space. I've taken classes but have never fired a kiln. I have the same model that you demonstrated. Was your demo for a bisque fire or a glaze fire or are they the same, just different cones?
You would just use a different cone. Make sure to use the proper cone for the temp. rating of your clay.
The same, just different cones. At this school, I had so many students and only this one kiln, so we fired everything to the same cone because I had to fire mixed loads. Not ideal, but it worked.
I have been firing a similar kiln for several years. The best thing that was passed on was the placement of the cone in the sitter. Some people put the cone too far back and then wonder why the kiln did not fire correctly, with a manual kiln you have to be careful that you use the correct cones ( bars or small cones in the sitter, and not on the shelf) But this will be a benefit to all of those new people, especially those with a Scutt kiln. We have an old Cress and is similar,it has done a lot of work but it is for me the best.
Wish I found this video at the beginning of the semester! Thank you though for making it :)
Why do you have to keep coming back every two hours? Shouldn't it audiomatically switch to medium and then high? I thought you weren't supposed to be near the kiln when it's firing
El horno es eléctrico pero no automático, es manual.
This video is very helpful for a complete beginning. I recently was given a very old manual kiln, but I have 0 experience in pottery. How do I know how long each setting should run for?
you did not tell me what to have the first 2 nobs set on and if its should be on during the 10 hour firing????? you said to set it to low after firing ,but that is after the firing...
I love your video! I have been looking for a full video on how to use Skutt Model LT-3k from start to finish. Can someone help me😬
Hoje comprei um forno Duncan 820 x1. Paguei uS$ 600 aqui no Brasil.está muito oxidado o lado externo. Deve ter uns 25 anos. Obrigado pelo otimo video
I was trying to bisque for the first time and went thru low and med okay but my kiln cone melted early and cut the power. It was only 15 min into the high session. Any clues why? Great video by the way!
It may have reached temperature - did you have witness cones in the kiln?
I have. A old skutt kiln very large with three sections, do you know if I can take away one of the sections and run it with just two sections
Yes. You can
@@alvaro31415afectaría en algo la quema? Mi horno es el mismo del vídeo con 3 secciones y solo trabajo con piezas pequeñas.
Omg thank youuuu! I was given a kiln and there’s no manual because good kiln co is closed and this helped so so much
Is there any way to fire all the way through without doing the 2-3 hour increments? Thank you!
Great video! I have a small Seely Olivia, which is like an Olympic kiln. I love having the high, medium, and low knobs. The kiln I just picked up just has on/off switches. I am a little worried I won't fire it right.
What where you firing at? I’ll be firing at cone 6 for glaze. I know already I have to Bisque fire at cone 04. How do you know how long to hold at each temperature? Also when using a cone sitter do you put the highest temp cone in the setting?
If you hold at two hours for each switch, the critical temperatures are moved through slowly. Once all of the switches are on, it will continue to raise the temperature until the cone bends, dropping the switch. You will just need to use a 6 mini cone or bar in the kiln sitter for your glaze firing. This method drops the shutoff lever once the heat work has bent the pyrometric cone/bar. You use the cone/bar for the cone you want to fire to.
@@visualartresources1780con todos los conos siempre se regula, LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, cada 2 horas?
Do you have to heat it overnight if your pieces are bone dry?
I do to make sure the heat is even through out --some pieces are thicker than others.
Does anyone know where to get a manual for a Gare kiln model 1818?
Very useful. Very well explained! Thank you.
Bars over cones ?
I needed this, thank you!!
I have to agree with spikeadellic......I have been using my manual kiln for about 8 years and I just learned more than I have up to this point. I only fired about 1 hour to 1.5 hours between turn ups. I'll try 2 now! Unfortunately I have a kiln firing that is almost done today or I would have tried this now! Thank you!!
Oh thank goodness I found your video! I've been looking and looking for a manual kiln how too and stumbled upon THIS video of yourz!! And this is what I was lookn for!! I have kilns just like this!! And now I have a better understanding of how it works I intend to join you again and again to learn from your knowledge of these kiln (s) !! And much more! AGAIN THANK YOU FOR THIS INFORMATION!! IT HAS SAVED MY SANITY LOL
Thank you so much, excellent little review!
Thank you
Thank you
So damn helpful thank you!
I need the manual for the same kiln you are showing in the video. The video is so helpful. Do you have a copy of the manual. I would like to offer to pay for a copy of it. Please let me know. Betty Wilson on Facebook.
Did you ever find one? I need one too!
