- This week on Topic Tuesday we discuss:
1. Developing sparring instincts.
2. Improving your kicking speed.
3. Martial arts like Taekwondo but without poomsae.
4. Favorite Taekwondo movie actors.
5. Making poomsae exciting to students.
& More!
Poomsae as a form of ritual - that is a perspective I really love. I like to listen for what poomsae is trying to tell or teach me. I ask myself what the theme, movement and the practice mean to me both today and in the longer term. I think it is a modality of both action and reflection.
Poomsae is the practical way of martial arts in order to perform them properly.
Piggy backing off a comment in this video: what is it about modern sparring that makes it potentially difficult for older learners? I am mid 30s and new to the sport, but enjoy sparring, so I would like to try to get ahead of any potential hurdles
what are the best stretches to improve Axe kick?
and do you agree that wall supported kicks can help you get use to the kick and be able to apply it on sparring?
Hi Paul, it's me once again.
I'm working with Koryo, and I'm struggling a lot with yeopchagi, my technique is fine but my kick doesn't go above the waist. I thought it was only a flex issue, which it is but yesterday I realized I also lack strength in the lateral area of the glutes and in part of the legs, not sure if there's more muscles involved that I need to work or something else, but are there any exercises that could help me improve the height of my yeopchagi?.
Thanks Paul!.
is using resistance bands trunk control exercise helps you improve tornado kicks? or is practicing itself more effective ?
Question: what are the best shoes to practice kicking? I obviously train barefoot in my dojang, but the gym where I also train has a GREAT heavy bag but requires shoes. I am afraid the grips of my shoes may lead to an injury with turning kicks😢
Please help in poomsae 1-8 application of all blocks and strike in self defence
@@NaveenRaj-b1y my Taegeuk poomsae course does a lot with this.

I am confused. There are poomsae requirements also for higher black belts. Well, if you follow the minimum requirements from kukkiwon that is.
@@petereriksson6760 if you want to move through the Dan system, yes. My point was, you only need to be a 1st Dan to be in the black belt sparring category which is not otherwise divided by rank. Once you reach black belt the entire sparring field is unlocked, so there is no real need to do poomsae again if you don’t want to.
@@tkdguideah, ok. Yes, then I see your point. Here where I live, from 3rg gup/ blue-red you are already in the advanced category for kyurugi but I guess international competition requires shodan. 👍
