What a fine group of musicians. The 70 produced some the greatest music ever. I've seen Marshall tucker back in the day along with Charlie Daniel's. It's always great looking back at all the fantastic music these people produced. Thanks for sharing.
For me, 24 Hours At A Time and other songs, live at the Johnson City Civic Center in the late 70's. What a time we had. We snuck in booze in our socks. High, drunk, it was fantastik. Toy and the boys played different when live, they rocked it and countried it at the same time. Forty five years ago and I will always remember.
Oh man, live "Can't You See", the flute!!! How unique. Always goosebumps to that song. You know it's good when Waylon covers it. My Rainbow album was about wore thru with plays. The cover and the vinyl. Partied so hard to that band!! What a wonderful tribute to a talented musician and veteran. RIP ❤As always, thanks Doc 🐎
My favorite is If I Can See You One More Time. I learned to play it in my back yard and my neighbors loved it, they thought I wrote it. I told them where it comes from and created more Marshall Tucker fans.
I've been playing it for about 40 years and everyone loves it but most have to ask who did it, or is that one of mine. A great song just like the rest of their music.
Thanks for this video Doc! One of my favorite bands I never got to see… Sad that Tommy and Toy both died too young! I liked their Carolina Dreams album, Melody Ann, and Can’t You See- live, the most. But they played a lot of great music that I always go back to when Something’s Missing in My Life….
As I've previously stated on other videos saw these guys open for the Guess Who in 1974. They got called back three times. Been a lifelong fan since as all of us at that show became. I always thought other than Toys smokin' leads it was Jerry Eubanks versatility on the saxophone and the flute that gave them their unique sound. Favorite songs are Southern Woman, A New Life, Fire on the Mountain, Searchin' for a Rainbow, Take the Highway. But all their albums are gems start to finish.
Take the highway, 24hours, Running like the wind, Fly eagle fly, One more time. I've always considered the MARSHALL TUCKER BAND to be the best Southern rock band there is. And I still do.
I went to high school with Tommy. We were in Miss Gosnells music class.Tommy, Doug Gray and Jerry Eubanks were all in the high school chorus. Tommy was on the basketball team and the golf team. I remember the first time they played as "the Marshall Tucker group" on a flat bead trailer at the old Star light drive in theater in Spartanburg S.C. Tommy was recently home from the Marines and had a brace on his leg up to his hip . Franklin Wilkie was still playing bass and Tommy was playing rhythm guitar with Toy's Gibson les Paul. Doug was still sporting his Army haircut .
You're welcome! Tommy had one of the first jacked up 4 wheel drive pick up trucks. A canary yellow 1958 Chevrolet Apache body on a 4 wheel frame with over sized tires.
@@RiverDocs Tim was a good bit younger. I didn't know him very well. He was an equestrian. A good boy. Toy and Tommy's Dad was named Toy also. He played banjo was a master plumber. Best in town.Their grandfather was named Toy Thomas Caldwell. All were Marines. WW1,WW2 and Vietnam.
@carrollcaldwell4570 I had read that about his dad. If you ever want to talk more let me know. I love listening to stories and much as telling them. Email me sometime. I'd love to hear more. riverdocs@yahoo.com
On any given day any song off the Where We All Belong Album is my favorite MTB song. God Bless the members of the band who served our nation during those turbulent times.
My fave Tucker song... Like asking me my favorite bourbon. The words at the bottom of Tommy's stone are from a Tucker song. If you don't know which one.. you'll have to listen to their entire discography to find it. Not a bad way to spend a rainy weekend.
Knew them in my high school days. Had class with Tommy. He was such a great guy and a real comedian. A real entertainer and leader. So many friends miss him. He left us too soon.
Love MTB and their live version of 24 Hours at a Time with Charlie Daniels on fiddle is epic! Sadly the current version of MTB is no very good as Doug Gray has lost his once great pipes. One of the few shows I left early from. Great tribute.
In the 70s I Saul Marshall Tucker maybe 10 times every time was different. I saw him three times with toy and to tell you the truth. I don’t understand why toy Caldwel isn’t even considered as one of the greatest guitar players of his time.
Another great Music Appreciation Session River Docks ! I'm learning a lot more about the Southern Rock scene today by viewing your musicians documentaries . Thanks RD , Keeping it alive 🎸👍
You have one of my absolute favorite channels on UA-cam. From watching some of your past videos we have had a similar life experience I spent about 18 years in STL and was a big fan of KSHE radio. I also moved to Florida in the past few years. Please keep the docs coming. I appreciate them all!
I have loved this band since I was kid and the first album came out. Something I've have always believed is that they for sure had the country swing thing happening and some glimmers of jazz in their playing.
You ain’t fooling me.Probably best steel guitar I’ve ever heard.Shout out to my ole best friend Greg Brandon in Florissant,Mo.He put me on to Marshall Tucker.
charlie daniels and band were touring with marshall tucker in the early days…charlie said they didnt have money for a room…so tommy pulled some money out of his boot and said you do now…
Favorite songs are, I should’ve never started loving you and tell it to the devil from my favorite album Carolina dreams! (Edit:) A few words about Tommy. Some bands just get lucky and have that one anchor member and Tommy was it without a doubt. The band , at least tried to carry on but carrying the load and emotional trauma forward was just too much. Such a great band that I still listen to often to this day. Thanks Doc! Another great segment. Love MTB.🎶
Doug Gray once said the Band was at their peak for Tommy’s last shows which is the Live on Long Island Album. They were live on NY’s WLIR FM for the Friday 4/16/80 show My friend taped it. I’ve probably heard it 1,000 times in my life. Tommy introduces all but four tunes in the show, three of which were encores. My favorite, from that show is Take The Highway.Another great song Tommy wrote was sadly, You Don’t Live Forever from the Long Hard Ride album. Great solo from Toy on it. Toy was never the same after losing Tommy.
Thanks for the added info. And I agree Toy and basically the band was never the same. I think he was a much bigger part of that band than many of us realized. Thanks for watching and your comment.
I wonder if Toy took exception to the grave-stone saying "Leader", I always thought Toy was the leader. He was a strong force, dedicated Marine Corps veteran and outstanding song-writer and performer , almost a virtuoso at the guitar
Also, I might add. When the concert was announced, the ad said plus special guest star band. I guessed the Little River Band & I was right. The San Bernadino Swing Auditorium lit up. Marshall Tucker Band to this day how great they blew all of us away.

My favorite band of all time !
Saw them live four times. Best show was the first one in 1978
To many favorites songs to pick one.

24 hours at a time was one of the best bass solo's of all time. Great job as always
So very very sad. Marshall Tucker band is the best. Love watching videos of them playing back them. Wish they were still here. Toy and Tommy.
In My Own Way, Virginia, and I’ll Be Loving You, are great tunes!
Thanks for this video Doc! One of my favorite bands I never got to see…

I can remember the first time I saw MTB Tommy’s bass solo on 24 hrs at a time was mind blowing. That was over 50 yrs ago.

I appreciate this video. I always felt that he deserved more credit than he got and this sort of explains that.
Semper Fi MARINE!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!
Can't You See, and Heard It In A Love Song, are two of the greatest southern rock songs made.... I just can't listen to them enough....
Such an excellent band

It truly hurt when I heard of Tommy’s death. I loved his bass playing. He was the engine that made that band run flawlessly.
Great show. 24 Hrs my favorite

I really like Silverado searching for a rainbow and I love the album Carolina dreams
great bass player.

Well thank you. I'm glad you enjoy it. KSHE rocks! Welcome to Florida!
Running like the wind
One of my all time favorites.
Love all MTB songs though....
Outstanding Truth... Tommy was the driving force along with Paul on the drums... Thx for the video!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
24 hours at a Time Live for sure !!! We did that route from Houston thru Arkansas and then up North multiple times . Good times on the road !!!!
I have loved this band since I was kid and the first album came out. Something I've have always believed is that they for sure had the country swing thing happening and some glimmers of jazz in their playing.

Favorite song is "A new Life".
River Doc what a great radio voice
Thanks
I saw them twice in the early days. I always thought Tommy was a major part.I believe that even more now. They were magic
Definitely Fire on the Mountain...excellent...band all around.
Great doc, Doc! I’m not too familiar with Marshall Tucker but I always enjoy your videos! Love hearing the musicians stories 😎👍
Thanks Dirty Pat. Appreciate it!

melody ann is worth many a listen

THE BEST
"Fire on the Mountain"
Hard to say what my favorite song was they where great , you ant fooling me on a new life album was just a beautiful song
You ant fooling me on new life album that song can give you the chills
Tommy was the leader of the band no question. Tommy was head strong and butted heads with Gregg Allman on some tours and they did not like each other.
I wonder if Toy took exception to the grave-stone saying "Leader", I always thought Toy was the leader. He was a strong force, dedicated Marine Corps veteran and outstanding song-writer and performer , almost a virtuoso at the guitar
Can't you see was written by Bill Thames in Daytona Beach Florida.
Sadly Bill did not protect his copyrights. I personally know this to be true!
They were a great Southern Rock band. I saw them in 1978 and they were so good to watch. Their (Tenth) album is flawless
Also, I might add. When the concert was announced, the ad said plus special guest star band. I guessed the Little River Band & I was right. The San Bernadino Swing Auditorium lit up. Marshall Tucker Band to this day how great they blew all of us away.
