Even though I lived it as a kid and followed Reggie, I forgot that he was a heisman contender as a SOPHOMORE! I had only remembered something vaguely about being excited about him prior to that junior year for the ages. Of course I was excited because turns out I forgot he was a stud bascially the moment he stepped onto usc fields. It just took a little time for him to get a bit more volume of touches to make his mark. Sort of reminds me of Barry Sanders career slightly. Both of them found ways outside of handoffs to terrorized defenders. Barry was one of the best returners in the country, and Reggie himself took a 3 kicks back for touchdowns before his junior year. Both also of course had great rushing statistics when they did get handoffs prior to their huge junior seasons. Reggie also had excellent receiving numbers for his role as a freshman and his receiving numbers as a halfback his sophomore year played a huge role in why he was 5th in the Heisman. I believe he totaled over 500 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns and averaged 12 yards a catch, insane for a halfback. Heck, he averaged 20 yards a catch as a freshman and then 13 as a junior! That’s one thing that always jumps off the page when I look at Barry and Reggie as college stars. Not only their yardage was excellent, but they just jumped off the page in the context of yards per carry, catch, return, etc. Reggie averaged 8.5 yards per touch from scrimmage! Insane! He had only 500 career touches, but he put up 4,400 total yards! That’s just …wow. A lot of the greatest college backs got 300 carries per year. Reggie got 433 and STILL ran for over 3,100 yards! And Barry averaged 7.6 yards per carry the year the he totaled an insane 2,600 rushing yards! Volume AND efficiency! Insane! Reggie averaged 8.7 yards per tote his junior year too lol. That’s just blasphemy. To be fair to Reggie he actually outpaced Barry by a decent amount in terms of his career yardage per carry. Barry was ok his first two years, around 4.5-5.5 per. Reggie was 5.8 as a freshman, plus those 20 per reception, and then sophmore and junior year he’s 6.3 and 8.7. Just insane. Both of them also AVERAGED 16 yards per PUNT return during their sophomore years when they each took 2 punts to the house. Barry also took 2 kickoffs to the house that same season, averaged 32 yards PER kickoff return, and was the best return man in the entire country.
The most exciting college football player of all time in my opinion. Give the man his Heisman back.
Brings back memories. As an LA native Reggie was so much fun to watch as a kid going to USC games
