  • Welp, finally got around to a Slaughter To Prevail track.
I don't know what I expected, but somehow this was still exactly it ...musically. The video though!?!? This video comes preloaded in every Dacia car with a week's worth of vodka in the trunk. This video packs its own bullets. This video invented the Hardbass genre. This video can survive in arctic temperatures. This video wore 3 stripes before Adidas was even founded.
This is one of the few times where the video leaves such an impact that it makes it difficult to take the music at face value. I had a hard time getting around that, obviously. But hey! Can't like 'em all and shouldn't if I want to remain honest. Fake reactions and crowd-pleasing are not something I'm trying to chase. Probably not going to go over well, but, oh well.
As always, thanks for watching along and let me know what else I should be keeping an ear out for.

Some references, that can be found there. Baba Yaga - in slavic folklore its witch, that lives in deep forest, and in some stories acts as helper to hero of story, and sometimes works as "horror" antagonist, like she's stealing children and cook em in big pot. In famous John Wick series John's nickname is Baba Yaga, altough she's clearly mythologycally woman, no male counterpart. So i can think that they either played on topic of either Alex acting as Baba Yaga, like some of russian lyrical parts saying, or he acted as killer of witch, because you can see, that body parts - head look like kinda womans head. So, he killed and they with boys eaten Baba Yaga, presumably. Also, interior in start of video is clearly interior of traditional russian/slavic home from mid-ages to even nowadays in countryside parts of Russia. One of boys also cooked some body parts in pot in start. So, thats mythological references. English lyrics and some parts of russian one are in style of "Im so tough, cool, dont cross way before me", etc. So i assume, thats probably reference to John Wick, like all that lasers pointed at Alex, tank, rocket launcher, bulletproof west. Also, scene in the end, where they play russian roulette - they all wearing russian gopnik, or 90-2000's russian mafia style clothing, thats why tracksuits with gold chains, leather jackets, etc. It is canonical look of russian gangster from mid nineties to up to 2010. Also, whole scene, i think, is reference to somewhat "cultish" russian dark comedy, called Жмурки, or Jmurki in stransliteration. I dont know, how to translate that word in context, because there can be serious wordplay. That is very obscure, gory and dark comedy about some unfortunate russian bandits and their doings. Also, i think, that song is somewhat collection of all russian related stereotypes, like bear, russian house, baba yaga (folklore witch), tank, rocket launcher, AK rifle, winter, bandits, vodka, russian roulette. But its not just like stereotypes, but whole design of video is not just make fun of em, but to make em look cool and stylish, so group definetely embracing that "folklore". Sorry for bad english and long post

Yo, this is great! Thanks for the explanation. You shared a ton of information that would be completely missing for non-Russian viewers. It makes the video seem 100% less random and I wish I knew this up front 😂

@@andrew_ Ah, you are welcome :) Gonna copy my comment to another reactors, kinda hard to rewrite that thing multiple times :D I hope that will not offend you. Also, btw, anthropologists, who study russian folklore also associates Baba Yaga with... How to say that. Like gatekeeper between real world and world of the dead, like clear origins of that character are somewhat unclear

Alex has put on a shirt with "Made in Russia" - if you do that - there is no wonder you put those well known clisches in your vid. But each time those stereotypes appear they play with that. "Babushka" is a well known russian mem. Baba (Yaga) is a short version of babushka. Bear is a russian symbol, but... have you ever saw that a bear in that bloody context previously? Or singer of a band literally fighting the bear? No. That why they put this. Have you ever seen russian roulet played with 4 shots - 4 deaths? No. have you ever seen a guy with a golden mask sitting on a tank? No. Each time they pull that "old" clische - they add something completely new to it. And that why this vid is hillarious and captivating. Have you noticed that that the severed female head is very similar to Tati from Jinjer? No. But thats another easter egg in the vid. Is it any form of insult? No. I am sure jinjer were smiling and laughing at this. Because it doesnt contain any hate - all the symbols used in this vid are not to tell "we hate you" its much more about "we are alive and we have energy to transfer to all of you". And all those "dead parts" are opposite to what this track brings to the table - sparkle of life, youth and testosteron. Alex eats Baba Yaga. Alex dances with a bear. Alex taking over the tank... These are all acts of protection. Yaga, Bear, Tank - aresymbols of danger and Alex taking care of it. And as you are in your reaction - do not get the point - same as the World doesnt get the point. Thas why all nenbers of the band kill themselves at the end. Their work is done, the world is saved, but the world doesnt care. Why continue trying?

I love this song personally, I'm a huge Slipknot fan and love the inspiration they took. Also yeah it's for memes, deathcore is typically not a very serious genre despite the excellent musicianship. If you check out more of them, Agony (all English), Demolisher, and King are all great. If you want an example of satire Deathcore listen to anything by Infant Annihilator

@@andrew_ Baba Yaga is very experimental compared to their normal sound. If you haven't already I highly recommend the Agony music video.
As far as the mask store and the general "memeyness" Alex Terrible has basically made himself a brand. He has Russian Hate Project (covers) and Slaughter To Prevail (original music) and he has centered both projects around himself. He even releases STP music videos on his personal channel. He has a large personal following and has built a fan base off of being a Russian stereotype that gets called Satan for his vocals.
You can check out his IG to kind of see his personality.
But yeah basically any song besides Baba Yaga is going to be much more like your typical deathcore (with a few twists sometimes mainly because of his vocal talent).

Actually Slaughter to Prevail is not supposed to be loved by each reactor and in terms of "I dont like this" this reaction - all you say is legit. But everything you hate about this video is sort of what I like in it. I am russian and i am absolutely ok with all the stereotype stamps in this vid - because each second of the track is bursting with energy and not dead, but live-energy. I guess you just dont (or cant?) open the inner-channel to feel that as your senses are pressed by all of this gore and madness on the screen. Well, no musician ever could please all of his listeners no matter how they try. In case of Alex and his band - I am sure that in this track not only they have done the best work they could at this moment, but gave a huuge impact on the further development of the genre (or maybe even several genres). And I feel kind of sad that you missed all of this.

Mask store/ Merchandise. Unfortunately musicians really don’t have much of a choice anymore but to sell their brand. Considering platforms like Spotify etc. don’t pay jack shit for an artists music. If we want to support the artists we enjoy so they can continue to make music, bands need a gimmick. Artwork, shirts, masks, and so on. STP didn’t wear masks earlier in their career. These masks are designed/made by the lead singer Alex Terrible.

tl;dr "I don't understand the subculture behind this so I am gonna trash it". The monster energy stereotype is a A7x and 5fdp thing. This sounds nothing like Korn. You'll find that most fans of bands like this actually tend to be grown adults. Is it a bit edgy? Sure. However, it's time to grow up and accept that some people like things that are ridiculous and sometimes for the reason that it is ridiculous. The reason this band is so popular has little to do with image and more to do with their very complex sound and virtuosic musical talents. Metal bands are known for having weird and edgy images specifically because it gets people talking. They are almost always self aware. It's a long standing tradition that dates back to the birth metal during the Satanic Panic. The idea was "oh we worship the devil huh, sure let's go with that" and it has evolved since then. Powerwolf dresses up like undead priests. Amon Amarth gets up on stage pretending to be vikings. Alestorm is well... Alestorm. If you think this is immature and over over the top I am genuinely curious if you have even looked into the metal subculture before talking out your rear end. This band is TAME compared to much of what is out there. It's okay to not like something, putting out a reaction where you didn't like the song can even be refreshing. However, taking a fat dump on something you don't understand as well as the fanbase is even more childish than you claim the imagery in this video is. Let people enjoy things and get off your high horse.
