it could be thst the child was born with the decease that ends its cycle upon death, but pearly cat reviving it has worsen it unintentionally, if so, the echo endimg makes a lot more sense bc pesrl cat is bound to the phisical world due to it wanting its child to live
i think my major issues with the mod is that being the pearlcat doesnt mean anything up until the very end. I think if there was more of a proper focus to explore the world and find the pearls and while doing that realize that the pup was ill the entire time wouldve been better than the basic talk to pebbles then moon then subterranean loop most slugcat mods take. theres also the railway, you'd think that the mod maker flexing their chops like that would imply massive world changes but there isnt any, it's just hunters world state plus metropolis and outer expanse. it's campaign is disapointing but the character itself is awesome, perfect for a world tour collecting all of the pearls, kinda wish the black pearl wasnt so useless or that the base cap was over 9 pearls so it could focus on gathering them but hey, it's still an awesome mod.
It's overpowered anyway so I just decided to put the cap at 50 and watch the world burn :) Also there's the rot pearl I guess as an additional lore thing but that's kinda a small thing
that's such a thought out review, but yeah, I agree. It would be nice to be incentivized to collect the pearls. If you don't mind me putting a fan alt story for a fan mod. you start the game with only the revive pearl and only one pearl slot. in each region, there's an echo pearl. You can channel the pearl to gain an extra pearl slot. Each echo pearl also slightly progresses the child's illness, to represent it getting worse over time (kinda like what goes down in Ender Lillies, if you're familiar with that game). perhaps each echo pearl reveals a little bit about pearl cat's backstory? Alternatively, they send pearl cat into some solo dream levels that represent pearl cat's past somehow? when you enter these levels, you lose your pearls. dying in a level simply kicks pearl cat out of the dream, so they have to channel the pearl to attempt the level again (maybe it's a once per cycle thing? maybe it isn't). these levels have the echo aesthetic to them (like the same filter and particles that appear upon finding an echo). maybe they use exclusively rubicon enemies? So, they're tough to get through, but they're also a more curated challenge than rain world normally provides. I imagine the levels would be completed either by finding something or finding a den and getting enough food to rest in it within a time limit, succeeding at this reveals something like the golden slug cat that you'd sometimes find sleeping in dens in the survivor/monk campaigns alongside a single image representing a dream. These levels would probably want to mix elements of rubicon and the region the echo pearl was discovered in. there may need to be custom enemies that are just rubicon variants of existing enemies, like echo pole plants or echo vultures. these levels could be linear or windy, short or long, whatever the modder feels more comfortable creating. the way this contributes to the story is that it's a reminder that behind the magic powers the pearl cat possesses, they're just a frail and scared creature, just like everything else. when you collect every echo pearl, the child finally succumbs to the disease and cannot be revived. There's new dialogue if you present their corpse to moon or pebbles. if pearl cat carries the corpse back to the Outer Expanse, they get an ending where they lay the child to rest and has a new child. from there, this new child, who maybe has a different fur or cloak color, replaces the dead child in gameplay. From here, the yellow and green pearls are also disabled. If the player chooses to ascend the cats, you get a happy ascension ending, symbolizing that pearl cat has let go of its grief. If you attempt to ascend pearl cat at any point before here, you get the ending where the child ascends but pearl cat becomes an echo. This will also happen if you ever abandon the child or the child's corpse and then try to ascend. I believe in the mod, Moon says something about the green pearl being a massive taboo to the ancients, and yet it feels oddly comforting to hold. So, I figured the revive and shield pearls could sort of represent pearl cat's refusal to let go and desperation to keep their child alive, but with their illness, it's ironically just dragging out their suffering. So, ascending could be a symbolic representation of them moving on from their grief. I'm not sure how well that meshes with rain world's existing lore, but I'd definitely want to lean the story more into being about grief. Maybe as a counterpart to the Artificer? The custom levels idea would probably be quite difficult to make? I'm unsure how difficult custom regions are or are not to make in rain world's modding sphere. I think simply replacing the custom regions with a single image cutscene or even just making them give you an extra slot would also be satisfactory in terms of gameplay. It gives the player a reason to seek these things out. This really isn't an expectation on the modder to make anything more, since what they already made is what it is. Ultimately mods are made for fun and all that. But yeah, I'm looking forwards to finishing the pearl cat campaign that I'm currently doing. I really like how most of the challenge comes more from keeping the child alive than pearl cat's own survival, so the twist that the child dies really hits. I'd love to see the mod lean more into that idea if it continues updating.
Not to be that guy or to be rude so please excuse me but the black pearl does actually do something, when used it will camouflage both you and Scarf and allowing you to see in the dark and see camouflage enemies. If you deploy it as a sentry, witch Im not even sure if Skurry even did that, will show the area around you for a bit. Hope this helps and I'm sorry if I touch nerves with this reply but i do agree that Scarf's illness should be shown a lot more.
I remember first playing it and always scaring the absolute crap out of myself bc the red pearls would go off and I wouldn’t even see the thing it shot till it came running after me.
I think the ascension ending is the better of the two, but it’s still super sad; Perl cat’s perseverance to find a way to save scarf from death, and their refusal to let them pass (that first revival at the beginning) is also the reason perl can’t ascend with scarf. Unfortunately, they realize that to give scarf the best possible end, they must let go. but even after letting go physically, they can’t let go in their heart; so they become an echo.
@@iluvengrishfood1500 Either A) she does and that happens after the ending cutscene or B) seeing her kids one final time was enough to make her let go and find acceptance in her final moments, letting her ascend.
@@iluvengrishfood1500 she's essentially stuck at 1 karma, so she just can't ascend; she's stuck in the cycles. from a lore standpoint I think you only become an echo if you physically can ascend but you're heart doesn't want to let go.
Maybe you need to bring Pebbles a specific pearl? I'm thinking the Shoreline pink pearl, since it has info on a creature which people theorize is a progenitor of slugcats, or maybe there's a special pearl in the mod
While the lore slugcat seems very out of place compared to the original game, with no context to the original game, this is a very well done modded character. All of the visuals and detail look great for the pearl effects, and that train ride at the beginning especially being quite awesome
I kinda wish there was like, a final challenge for this cat. Imagine if the final ending was like Rubicon, where you have to battle your way through void hell using every pearl you've collected in order to find some magical cure for the pup. Easier said than implemented, I'm sure, but food for thought regardless.
If you're trying out modded slugcats I would heartily recommend Gravel Eater. Drone Master also has a complete campaign (plus unique dreams) though it is a bit overpowered.

ooh, I started that mod a bit ago. it's been fun. I like how you have superpowers but then jr keeps dying so it's similar difficulty to my monk playthrough. so, it's nice to do between the harder dlc campaigns. I've also be playing the Outsider Mod. I don't think it has a complete campaign, but it's also felt really good to play through.
Wait when I played pearl cat the train dropped me off at 5 pebbles. Like, literally the place right outside Pebbles' access shaft thingy near the shelter with the popcorn. And it was night. Is it random?
Btw, I think the black pearl makes you like blend in or something. And when you press C I think it reveals camouflaged enemies like white lizards, drop wigs, and stowaways (if you have Downpour). Anyways that's what it did for me.
The story makes me miserable cause both endings have the two eventually being separated and cant be together for long But I still love it and enjoy playing it
I don't think this is such a sad ending. Yes, in the end, pearlcat and pearpup separate and pearlcat will now be stuck as an echo, but.. pearlpup is saved. They will not die permanently to the revival sickness and their spirit will go on to live with the rest of the ascended community. And besides, pearlcat kinda _chose_ this. A gaze to their pup... then upwards... and decided to get more knowledge and pearls, swimming up the void to counter-ascend and echo back to the real world. Perhaps Pearlcat knew all along. After the sickness manifested they just wanted to save their child in any way possible, and eventually knew ascending pearlpup was the only way to save them, but pearlcat simply didn't want to ascend along with them yet. At any rate, it is a nice conclusion in my opinion. It isn't so sad or bad. The dying child is saved and pearlcat gets to keep on getting the precious pearls they crave and all the knowledge they could ask for.
