SPOILERS AHEAD!! Maybe it happened because I kinda hate Hughie as a character, but I could not care a bit about anything happening to him this season cause the show seams not to care either. All that happened to him had no consequences and barely changed anything about him. He was SA'd TWICE, his father died, his mother came back, he got engaged with the wrong person and yet NOTHING HAPPENS!!!! He cries for one scene and argues with Starlight for 5 min and then everything is fine again, no trauma, no nothing. HIS FATHER KILLED LIKE A BUNCH OF PEOPLE AND THAT SERVES FOR NOTHING MORE THAN SOME GORE. It's really upseting.
I've seen close to 30 reviews/critiques of season 4, and I gotta say, only 10 mins in, you already have the most nuanced, balanced and insightful one I've seen.
The only arc I would try to offer any defense/pushback on would be Hughie’s dad with V. Idk that they did it perfectly but I get what they were trying to get done with it, development for Hughie. He was incapable of letting go so he had V stolen, it ended up in his dad’s system and for a second all was good. In the end, though, he not only prolonged the suffering of his father but actively added to it, and ended up having to let go.
I agree that the mom thing is rushed and very shallow. But I just wanted to point out that post partum depression isn't just depression. It can make you have great disdain for your child and make you have an urge to hurt them/ or kill yourself out of the fear of hurting them. Mixed with the pressure of how mothers are expected to feel about their child it often leads to the mother feeling like they can not talk about it. Sadly they are often proven right. I'm pretty sure that his mom hints at this herself. It doesn't make her leaving justified, but I just wanted to make it clear that it is much more than depression.
… so there’s post partum depression, and then there’s being in a mental state where you want to harm your child, and or yourself. Yeah, one would need a professional for that, because that’s horrendously irrational behavior that endangers others. That’s not something you just admit to people. As a man, that’s a trip to the psych ward.
Just found your channel! Gonna just put my thoughts down in small paragraphs- Personally, I loved this season, but it had several drawbacks, the main being many plot points just felt thrown around in a weird way, like kimiko not really having much to do after the halfway-ish point of the season. I still thought the idea of all the characters' pasts coming to haunt them in different ways was really interesting (except for Hughie's SA that was unnecessary. The treatment of male SA this whole season was extremely questionable, at best). The way s4 satirizes American politics felt oddly comforting to me?? Definitely my favorite aspect of the season for sure. With the current state of America, it was weirdly nice to see a show put my thoughts into a coherent story, I guess. I understand the sentiment that this season's constant ridicule of conservatives could be repetitive, even if one isn't conservative. But personally I viewed it as the show runners adjusting the show to what's happening in real life, as the show has always been about mirroring issues in our modern society. I have no problem with some more low brow jabs at alt-right ideology because I believe it's low brow politics itself, so it gets what it gives. Seeing Homelander be inept to the politics of the people he believes he's above was satisfying. Your point about Colin hit the nail on the coffin- it would've made much more sense for Frenchie to slowly fall in love with Colin from the start of the season, and then by episode 6 or 7, we could be hit with the plot twist of Frenchie having killed his family, leading way for a dramatic confrontation near the end (and not have that dumb one episode long story of Frenchie turning himself in, that was so forced and went absolutely nowhere). About Butcher's story, I think Kessler and Becca are supposed to represent the devil and angel on his shoulder, in a sense. Butcher the entire season has been trying to change for the better, turn Ryan off homelander in a natural way (unlike Mallory and Kessler, who just want him to force Ryan to kill Homelander). But ultimately he gives in to his devil and becomes the worst version of himself. I only know the general story beats of the comics, but I know that comics Butcher is a much more morally worse character,. So, I think season 4 has set up Butcher to become more like his comics self, not caring if he causes supe gen*cide. I don't know if they'll write Butcher to have something similar to his comics ending, but I thought Butcher's arc this season was a clever way to kind make a mix between the two versions of Butcher into one, if that makes sense
Honestly it’s so fun to watch homelander, I kinda hope he wins permanently creating a spin off show where he’s the man character and we get to see him ruling the world perpetually annoyed by everyone and regretting taking over
It’s funny. I just saw your Degrassi trans episode review yesterday and subscribed and then today you put out a fantastic video that puts to words exactly what I was thinking about the 4th season. I didn’t like the plot lines for Hughie, Annie, Frenchie, MM, Kimiko, or Butcher. It’s weird how much the quality of the writing on each of them was such a varied quality. I didn’t not enjoy the season but I wasn’t impressed. I also thought The Deep’s arc was pointless and that Homelander doing Homelander things was predictable. I’m just wanting more for the characters to do that isn’t so meandering and predictable. I also hated that Victoria was offed the way she was. It was a waste.
Ian Think They Rushed The Frenchie Thing .. Because Of The Time Skip & the Coincidence Of Him Working For Starlight Is Happenstance, I Think That Plays Of Fine Time Wise & Pacing Wise .. In Tandem With The Pacing Of The Entire Show😊
You lost when you started trying to explain Sage's "resentment of white people." Acknowledging racism isn't resentment and calling a black person uppity and 'one of the good ones' is VERY common micro aggression. Also known as subversive racism.
I think Sage has a resentment of white people to a certain extent and I'm saying that it makes sense for her character. I think there is a bitterness long stemmed hatred, like they way she treats Ashley, calling her a mascot to the company, her story with her grandmother and yes the Firecracker thing was racist, but Sage responds with hatred and vengeance when Firecracker calls her uppity. I think that is because Firecracker was being racist and she finally thought she could take revenge on some white bitch for being racist when there have probably been so many times she has had to just ignore it she chooses to let Firecracker get beat up on television as a form of revenge.
As soon as I heard it was a women’s voice on this channel I left the video knowing exactly that this review is going to be all set on feelings and emotions rather than appreciation of the art it’s self woke LGBTQ culture needs to take voices away from certain ppl stop hating on hard work other put in for ur entertainment be greatful u even have shows to watch
I think Sage’s obsession about, race holding her back negates her being the smartest person in the world. The smartest person in the world would be above racism, sexism and frankly would not care about petty things like approval. This is nothing on the actress, she’s so funny in the role (especially her portrayals of the lobotomy scenes). This is clearly a writer issue. Your character is only as smart as your best writer. Those challenges would have been applicable with any character other than the smartest person in the world.
i feel like Frenchie’s arc had to have been based around his availability to film this season, it seemed so lazy
Or his public zionism

They should’ve hinted at their relationship when they did the backstory in season 3 of how one of his friends had overdosed

Yeah, and I don't like how his sa was played for laughs when starlight's r word got way more resolution

I couldn't believe they did her dirty like that after doing nothing with her all season
When She Said "We" & Was Referring To Us As Black Americans, Ngl , A Biased Formed 💯
Finally, some logical Boys takes. Thank you
