I was an arcade player and a home system owner back then. I bought this cartridge when it came out and I have to say that this was the best arcade transfer to home system I had ever seen at the time. I still remember being amazed to this very day. If you’ve seen seen some of the arcade transfers, you’d have been appalled. I don’t know how they did it, but they did it. Great game overall.
What makes it even more impressive is that it was one of three games that launched with the Famicom on 15th July 1983, the other being Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. All are essentially arcade-perfect ports with the exception of Donkey Kong, which was missing the pie factory level but was still far better than any of the previous home ports. Thanks for sharing that by the way. This was all before my time and it's really interesting to see people's first impressions of the NES when it came out. And I agree, it's a great game.
Popeye is one of those games that was really good in it's day. One of the top reasons I couldn't wait to go to the arcade along with other platformers like Donkey Kong, Mappy, Burgertime, and Congo Bongo. I think it's badly overlooked. It hasn't aged as well as some of it's contemporaries but I still enjoy playing it to the point that I bought a physical copy. Mappy is my all time favorite from this genre and era of arcade classics but this game ranks quite high and brings back memories.
Scarlett Preuitt I think the NES cartridges at the time didn’t have as much memory as the arcade ROM boards could hold and some arcade games used. Also the original arcade used a Z80 CPU where the NES version used an N2A03 CPU (derivative of 6502). This could explain the differences.
I would mess with Bluto sometimes by punching him in the face amd running, I loved making that thing fall on his head, my favorite torture of mine was eating the spinach and letting him run up the stairs and waiting just below the last step at the end where he ran, then coming up and punching him, he'd go flying in the air, hit the Olive house, bounce off that, hit the Popeye house, then go cartwheeling into the drink. Yeah I was sadistic when I was a kid. 😆
Only bad thing about the NES version is Wimpy isn't in the second stage anymore, (On the teeter-totter.) and the Popeye face graphic is missing from the intro & ending. Otherwise it's a good arcade remake.
AlbanianMan: The Sea Hag is the one throwing the skulls. But yes, the bottle throwing Sea Hags are missing. What I miss too, is the intro and the ending.
Not even worth renting it to play between breakfast and snack time as you'll probably finish it twice by then even if it is moderately difficult for a teen. Such a ripoff. Definetly more suited for acades. This game ruined similar styled single screen games for me. I would ask if it's like Popeye and if the guy said yes I would skip it unless advised to play it.

The only thing missing in this port is Wimpy on one side of the teeter-totter on stage 2.

Good, it’s incredible if you remember all the the other transfers at that time. Most of them were horrific.
