Donkey Kong (Original) Full Playthrough (JP Arcade Version)

- This is emulated with MAME 0.119+. The American version only has the 1st and last levels, but the Japanese version also has the 2nd and 3rd. The name of this ROM is "Japan set 1".
There were a couple mistakes, but this was quick to complete compared to my many other videos. I'm sorry if my lack of skill in this game doesn't please you enough.
HOW HIGH CAN YOU GET?
LEVEL 1: 25m: Jump over barrels, or smash them with hammers, and climb ladders to reach Pauline.
LEVEL 2: 50m: Reach Donkey Kong's floor by climbing moving ladders and passing conveyer belts while avoiding fires, pies, and Donkey Kong, himself.
LEVEL 3: 75m: Use elevators and ladders while avoiding fires and springboards to reach Pauline's floor.
LEVEL 4: 100m: Use ladders to climb and break all of the pegs, while avoiding or destroying puffy flames with hammers.. Once you break all of the pegs, Donkey Kong will fall, and Jumpman, a.k.a. Mario, will be reunited for good.
And then the game starts RIGHT over again... sigh
--------------
In Levels 2 - 4, you can collect items for extra points. These are Pauline's sunhat, umbrella, and purse. The Bonus at the top-right corner of the screen is also a time limit. 1 second of time multiplied by 100 represents the Bonus points you get after beating the level. If the Bonus hits 000, you die!
In Levels 1 & 4, hammers will let you break barrels in Level 1, and flames in Level 4 for a few seconds. However, you can't jump with them, and you can't climb ladders with them. Because of how they're set up in those levels, you can't even use them to hit Donkey Kong if you tried. Notice how the flames in Level 4 turn blue when you grab a hammer. It's as if you were Pac-Man and they were Ghosts.

Back when fall damage killed mario. Glad to see his legs improved over the years. Now he can jump off the top of a city hall tower and land on his feet.
Yep i think its from his super mushrooms.
Like a cat
cartio
What's odd is that he used to be hurt by fall damage, then got over it, then got hurt by it again, then got over it again. I guess he skipped leg day during the N64 and GameCube era. Let's hope they don't bring back fall damage for a third time. Kinda sucks when you're known as "Jump Man" for outrageous jump height and can be hurt by it.
In Mario 64 he dies to fall damage

I got a Nintendo 64 for Christmas when I was 5, my first proper exposure to video games, and it was mind-blowing, but then my dad told me stories about how games used to be 2D, and what the original game with Mario in it was like. It equally blew my mind that games used to be "flat" before I was born, and I made a genuine effort to seek them out through arcades and playing the NES and SNES at other kids' houses. Finding a Donkey Kong cabinet for the first time felt like completing a religious pilgrimage.
There were 26 N64 2D games. From Asteroids Hyper 64 all the way to Yoshi Story. I probably enjoyed Killer Instinct Gold the most.
Same thing with computers. I never liked computers until I turned 14. I was already a crt fanatic at a young age, but when I found that computers looked exactly like scyfi depictions with their black screens with green letters printed on a black void, I was amazed at how different world of computing and programming was during the era of when this game was released.

it's easy to stop zoomers in comment section.
It's meant to be hard because it's an arcade game and that incentivises people to pay more to play it so they can win, it also helped pad out an otherwise extremely short game. Common practice back then
And thus, Mario the legend was born and became a gaming phenomenon
Mario and Pauline may have moved on with their lives, but its so wonderful that they are still good friends! :)

Donkey Kong, the 1981 arcade game from Nintendo, is widely considered to be one of the most important and influential video games of all time. The game helped to popularize the platform genre and introduced one of the most iconic characters in gaming history.
Donkey Kong was created by Shigeru Miyamoto, who is also credited with creating the Mario franchise. The game was originally designed as a sequel to Radar Scope, a game that was not successful. Miyamoto decided to change the game's theme to a love story, with the protagonist, Jumpman, rescuing his girlfriend, Pauline, from the evil gorilla Donkey Kong.
Donkey Kong was an immediate success, becoming one of the highest-grossing arcade games of all time. The game's success led to the development of a number of sequels and spin-offs, including Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, and Donkey Kong Country.
Donkey Kong is a simple but challenging game. Players control Jumpman as he climbs a series of ladders and platforms to reach Pauline. Along the way, he must avoid Donkey Kong's attacks, which include throwing barrels and rolling barrels down the ladders.
The game's graphics and sound were groundbreaking for the time. The game's graphics were colorful and detailed, and the game's music was catchy and memorable.
Donkey Kong is a classic game that continues to be enjoyed by gamers of all ages. The game's simple but challenging gameplay, iconic characters, and groundbreaking graphics and sound have helped to make it one of the most beloved video games of all time.
Here are some of the key contributions that Donkey Kong made to the video game industry:
Launched the platform genre: Donkey Kong is considered to be one of the first true platform games. The game's focus on climbing ladders and platforms helped to popularize the genre, which would go on to become one of the most popular genres in video gaming.
Introduced the Donkey Kong character: Donkey Kong is one of the most iconic characters in gaming history. The character has appeared in numerous video games, television shows, and movies.
Helped to popularize Nintendo: Donkey Kong was one of the first major successes for Nintendo. The game's success helped to make Nintendo one of the leading video game companies in the world.
