Well, I gotta admit while Karen patiently waits her turn, Aretha jumps on top of Karen every single time she sings anything in this song. Karen never gets to sing two measures without Aretha chiming in.

Wow. ReRe is my girl...and I kinda expected Karen to be somewhat quiet...but I don't think she (KCS) had much of a choice. Aretha covered every nook and cranny of this song. And, yes, she has been known to go back in and do overdubs with people she duets with...because more than likely they weren't at the studio at the same time. But in Aretha's defense, she will tell you, point blank. "You are singing on my record" so yes, I will be the dominant one! Always! - LOL
it's funny, but i agree a little bit with most of the people on here. Aretha is my all time favorite and in her prime, no one could touch her. She didn't have to try to out sing anyone she just did naturally because of her soul and vocal abilities. However, I did feel that Karen was holding back, maybe out of respect or just sheer admiration because she is her idol. I did not hear too much of the Karen that I am familiar with, the one that I know what she can do. It did seem like Aretha hollered in every spot not leaving much room. I was there when she recorded One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism. Joe Ligon, and I hope I'm spelling his name right,of the Mighty Clouds of Joy and Aretha did a duet. It was I've Been In the Storm Too Long. Joe was hollering and wearing the crowd out. Aretha was kinda laid back, but when I heard the record, everytime Joe hollered, Aretha hollered. She went in and re dubbed her dynamics. I mean she is the queen of soul and I guess she feels protective of her throne and title that she rightfully earned. There is no one like Aretha. She set the bar, she showed them how.So I don't know. Just don't ya'll try to come for me because of my opinion, because I am her number one fan. I will always love her, but she could have given Karen a little more space and it would just have been a good battle.Aretha can hold her own even to this day. Because it is not just all about the voice, which is a little different now, but Aretha has and always had the abilitiy to reach deep down into herself and deep down into us too and pull out something, a feeling that no one else can quite do. That is why she IS THE QUEEN OF SOUL

I totally agree with you every time Karen opened her mouth Aretha tried to sing over her. It was almost irritating to listen to this song for that reason. Aretha is forever the queen but got whatever reason, she has this thing about being upstaged. I saw it with my own eyes once in a rehearsal, she checked BeBe Winans because he started singing before she finished her last word of her line. It’s a beautiful song but all you hear are Aretha’s “oooohs”

yes. this was Aretha album not karen, but Aretha did sing on top of her. she did let it be known, that it was her song not karen. but karen kept up with her
That's just the way aretha does duets she always over powers she is a Aries they stand alone it is a solo sign look at Chaka another Aries she went solo left Rufus and Diana Ross another Aries left them Supremes Aries work better solo they aren't duet people in not saying all of them but they tend to be like that but be that as it is I still was blessed I knew aretha was gonna forget it was a duet bless here singing heart (lol) and bless karen do my 2 favorites praise God from whom all blessings fall and who blessed us to be on earth the same time as the singing warriors we don't have to have someone tell us about them like Billie Holliday Dinah Washington Clara ward we can say we heard them ourselves and have seen them !!!!!

I just became aware of this compilation of Aretha's music and I love it! My older friend /like mom always plays it for me. I had to finally look it up. I grew up in Detroit and around them in church. My mother played for New Bethel for a while...early morning service. I have a whole newer appreciation for Aretha and it's HER CD /Album. Karen held her own...you have to appreciate the sound of each of their voices. GOD BLESS 😊

@cleoharvey Well said! Aretha always tries to out sing everybody she sings with and it shows! Aretha is an Idle of Karen's. Karen simply gave her respect and held back! When Aretha feels you have out sung her she goes back and over sing her part to be over the person that she's doing the duet with! Trust me if Karen wanted to show out she could have but for Karen it wasn't about that! Karen was happy to be singing with her idle! I like your comment!
My 2 favorite singers in the world karen is like aretha but mixed with twinkie and firing and matte moss clark but my dear sweet queen of soul I love her to death a beautiful song but it would be nice to let karen say something , she got a little in there but that's just aretha bless her heart and may she rest in peace. I'm sure karen new what she was getting when she was asked to sing with the queen aretha loves the clark sisters they go back both coming from Detroit and it good for karen to have singing with the queen under her belt everyone can't say that and karen was respectful and homered the queen since she was older if that's the way it went down but I would never try to sing with karen or aretha those are 2 of the most influential female voices of all time doing a duet it was a moment in time it needs to be in that musical museum it really was phenomenal I just wish I could have had a little more Karen at least turn up her like but it was still off the chain I will add it to my downloads!!!!

@cleoharvey Yes, this is true. Aretha has stated during the promotion of this album that she had gone back periodically to update & add to her vocals on this album. This album's material, including this duet, is at least 5 years old. I have an Aretha interview from 2006 that first mentions this duet and title of the cd. Her issues with the label and distribution is what held this album off for so long.
OMG, wasn't it Karens dream to sing with Aretha. I'm glad God gives us gifts like this.
This is a great song. I only wish there were clear verses given to both Aretha and Karen to truly display each other collaboration. The overdubs were unsettling.
Ok, I had to listen to this song again to hear what everyone was complaining about...And I personally don't hear what the problem is. I hear Karen plain as day on this track. Also, from what I'm hearing...the only overdubs Aretha did was in the areas that Karen clearly wasn't sayin nothin on. And being that they didn't record it together, you will hear each one giving their praise & thanks to God at the same time. It was NO Shade on Aretha's part to drown out Karen.

@DaHotNig Karen was just singing where she could to Aretha`s vocals because Aretha had already recorded her vocals for this song and Karen did her vocals at a later time. They did not record this in the studio together. Karen talked about this in an interview

@Vocellist2010 no question, it has everything to do with the fact that Aretha is her idol. Aretha loves her as well, but Aretha has never played fair with other female vocalists. I guess I'll take this over never having them do anything together. If you listen to it too many times, you may wind up loving it. I love this song!

@cleoharvey But on the other hand, I know that this is KCS favorite singer of all time and a dream come true moment for her. So I'm certain she would've been just as honored if she only got to share 2 seconds with her. I know how Aretha can be and I figured KCS would naturally take the backseat for her. So I was not as disappointed because I did not expect any different. I still like the song and I especially enjoy the vamp portion.
Why is it that when Aretha sings with someone. She's always portrayed as she's trying to out sing that person. It's soooo stupid to say that. Yes, I said it! Aretha has always sung her heart out. Aretha did kill but Karen will kill too if she could have done more. Karen was interviewed regarding her experience working with Aretha on this and she said it was a great experience and a highlight of her career and that the producer told her to just sing around Aretha as Aretha had already completed her vocals for this song and was not in the studio when Karen was recording her vocals for this. Karen said that Aretha called her and asked if she would participate on this song.

@ikom35 well its not as if this was a live recording..... they probably werent even in the studio at the same time. And by the time the producers got done cutting and pasting parts, and overdubs, and mixing....you really cant tell what the dynamics may have been. So it wasn't about not oversinging the other....
You barely hear Karen... I feel like Karen basically singing backup. As far as in their prime... don't say Aretha Franklin is better as Karen has a range as high as Mariah Carey... so lets not go there...
Aretha & Karen's belting range are about the same. Mariah only has more range in terms of whistle register. They actually can both belt higher than Mariah.
No one can compare to Aretha’s prime, NO ONE! However, Karen is incredibly a gift to the body of Christ concerning voice and ministry. She is a jewel.
They are different voice types. Karen sings higher, but Aretha had a richer voice with more depth in her prime. Karen has better breathe control which is one of the reasons her voice stayed intact much longer than Aretha's. In terms of musicianship, there still hasn't been anyone to surpass Aretha yet.
@@melregissings and there won't ever be anyone who can beat her the talent she had.....Aretha's voice was never not intact . she could always sing the roof off just during this era it wasn't easy bcuz of the weight but when she lost it ...she tore everything she did up. Watch her natural woman performance. Or at the white house ....or when she sang it hurts like hell...she sound jus like when she did it in the 90s

Agreed, Aretha did over do the over-dubs on this song. I dont care if she is considered the queen of soul. It could have been sooo much better if she had not done all the adds of over dubs and add in. I do agree that Karen was honored to do this with her so...it's all good.

Karen is a formidable singer. However, Aretha at all times has a direct line to GOD. She may even be in her act, but one riff settles the issue. Karen is doing what she is suppose to do singing with the iconic elder of them all. It is a beautiful piece of Art and reverence to God. Praise to God and we are blessed to have Ms. Aretha Franklin and Karen Clark Sheard in our hearts and souls. Folks stop with the divisive stuff.

Karen can sing with the best of them including Ms Aretha, Karen was a nice addition to the song. Aretha could outsing every diva in her time except Patti LaBelle, including Gladys, Dionne, Diana & maybe even Tina.

Aretha in her “prime” could out sing everyone you have listed. That’s not even to be questioned. Although her range darkened in the 80s and 90s, her power was not. She still could ousting them, just with a different approach. She NEVER lost her belts, as some of her best belts were recorded in the 80s. She got her range back after 1992 when she quit smoking. Even Patti had to respect it. Check out the respect clip with Mary j blidge and Patti singing with Ree. Y’all gotta do better 😂
Aretha was untouchable from her gospel debut in 50''s up to the early 70's. I don't think any of those singers could out sing her back then.

You may heard of the fuss over the duet with Mavis Staples on the "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism" album from 1987. Aretha insisted that it be re-recorded in the studio because Mavis was a bit louder in the first recording.

I like this song but in my opinon it shouldn't have been on the album along with My country Tis Of Thee and the song her son did. She keeps promoting the album as A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE from a bad relationship, so what in the world does gospel music have to do with it???? I think on this one Aretha just ran out of ideas and had to fill in the blanks to make a full album. The album did poor in sales anyway just because Aretha didn't release the right songs to get people interested.

In Aretha's recording, she should have left space for a duet OR whoever mixed it should've fixed this. Aretha is known for trying to outsing people which would not have happened if this record would've been structured right. Aretha is legend, I luv and respect her but this was not a duet.
