Welcome to boat ownership. A few things that may help you out.
1) The radar is not for weather. It's for proximity. Extremely helpful at night. It's not obsolete whatsoever. It's completely stand alone. It sends and receives it's own data. At night, when you run over a piling or someones boat, you'll wish you had it. It also adds a lot of value to your boat.
2) The other items on the dash appear to be auto pilot. They are not obsolete and are extremely helpful with the radar on long hauls. Get them working. They will also add value to your boat.
3) You don't need to register the name of your boat with the USCG if you're recreational.
"The federal government requires registration of certain vessels with the Coast Guard to prove the boat's nationality. The system also facilitates trade between states and allows certain vehicles to enter restricted waters. Vessels of 5 net tons or more used for fishing or in coastal trade must register, unless they are exempt. Net tonnage refers to the volume of a boat, not its weight or cargo capacity. If your boat is more than 25 feet long, it is likely to measure at least 5 net tons."
4) Practice docking! Spend a day. Then spend a day when it's windy!
You have a great boat with a little care. You'll learn a lot.
Great comment...and all true....
I guess he thinks a phone with marinetraffic and some e-charts can replace those things. And will add value..somehow.
@@vanstreun Nope! Sorry, he's not thinking... He's just busy 'bricking' a piece of art.

Those engines are amazing! The coast guard used those engines in there 41foot UTB (utility boat)! I worked on them for many years, everything is very easy to work on for a beginner diesel mechanic! VT903M are legendary! Another thing, most of what you're seeing at higher rpm is steam coming from the exhaust not "smoke", a turbo re build would be a great idea and find someone to change out the impellers as well as adjust the valves! Bad ass boat!
Chris needs to see this comment.
@bisforbuild this is your mans right here
Indeed
Yes what he said. Most diesel boats will smoke a little. Don't stress. But would be a good idea to check impellers and do a general service and an over hall on turbo seals etc...
Give this man some likes to get top comment!
I've been a marine tech for about 5 years and we take care of 2 Riva's and they truly are the Ferrari of boats. Also you have a pair of 20 year old Cummins engine they all smoke man nothing to worry about.
I have commercial fishing boat, with Cummins in it, and it's also have lit smoke when idling, as also most boats with Cummins in harbor. Have the boat for 4 years, its working like the clock, and i put tons of hours on engine, because it's my money making machine 😂
A smoking engine in Portland area could cause a protest or riot. Perhaps an electric would have been better. Ha!
Ben Olofson they are 30 years old lol
I guess you kind of quit on this boat thing, you haven't mentioned it since.

I saw it sitting in the marina a couple weeks ago. Still no radar attached.
I served in the Navy 23 years. Radar is one of the most important things to have on any seagoing vessel. Put it back.
I'm not going to disagree here, radar is a super helpful tool. I would like to point out that this might not be a sea going vessel. If all you will do is travel on rivers and near the coast, in good conditions, there is no real need for radar. Radar helps navigate in low visibility or when you might encounter a lot of traffic going irregular paths. Out at sea, oncoming traffic could come from any angle, but near the coast and on rivers, the directions of travel and lanes are usually much more defined. All in all, these people just got their boating license, and I wouldn't expect a long expedition right now. So removing the radar, which might be broken even though they have no great understanding of its workings, is probably fine.
@ While what you said is true, I would still recommend it for little things like unexpected fog. You prepare for the worst, even if it is is unlikely, in the advent that the worst happens. It is planes not boats, but John F Kennedy Jr. died because of low visibility conditions that failed to be predicted and reported when they occurred, and he had no idea how to read his instruments.
Yes, put the broken radar back on the boat. Or the evil river he will use the boat on will murder him in his sleep.
@@EcnalKcin yes, especially being in the pacific northwest, it's not uncommon to have flash fog

two engines/props makes it easier to control, and even easier if it has bow thrusters... my 26ft single sterndrive is very difficult to dock and the clunky throttle doesn't help
if your planning on going out into the ocean 100% invest in a new radar you dont want to be in a shipping lane at night or in poor visibility conditions without one.

My dude you need some specific things for that boat.
A proper AIS system
A GPS and no not your phone but a marine GPS.
Radar is a bit optional since you probably won't be going to far out with it and most likely not when fog or rain is a possibility.
Should you consider doing night sailing with your boat then you need it. There is zero arguments for not avoiding it then. BTW radar signals don't work like you explained but that's a whole nother theme.
Depth finder would be a good investment but isn't a necessity.
Upgrade your navigational lights to LEDs for better visibility and make sure you buy marine LED lights and cases.

A cell phone is in no way, shape or form a valid alternative to proper equipment. You can use it to support the stuff you have but never to replace it.
If you wrap the table with a bit of a lip, you can cover the table with a much thicker epoxy resin which will look pretty amazing and last forever.
He could do a timber edging in a different color.
Yeah, I was thinking some kind of walnut or mahogany edge veneer. Like an 1/8” thicker than the plywood so you fill the middle bit with epoxy and it gives you that thick of a top cover. Practically indestructible and gorgeous as heck.

B is for Boat is great, would buy that on a shirt lol. FYI Azimut uses carbon fiber in the super-structure (everything above the waterline) in their new boats.
First thing I would do is get it surveyed by a marine surveyor, you never know what you will find. Next the fuel might be old which is why your getting some smoke, so I would get some injector cleaner through as the first so as to rule out the number one cause of smoking.
I hope you intend to put a radar back as they are almost a must have if you anywhere but your home port and they work with your auto helm equipment.
Also make sure you get an AIS transmitter/ receiver fitted (if it doesn't have one). Also get the EPERB re-registered to you and the new name of the boat.
This is more important than anything else other than life jackets.
FYI diesel fuel never gets old or "bad". The only thing that can happen is a fungus can grow in it, then it is considered bad.
@@BUnpyott bs. It does get old. Just not as fast as gasoline.
Diesel fuel has better properties for aging than gasoline, you might loose a bit of the cetane rating, that will not cause smoke through the RPM range. I think he has it figured with the turbos.

Navionics is a good backup gps on a smaller boat in my opinion... just for what it's worth...
Don’t forget bolting a piece of plywood to the back.
AMAZING!!! This is hands down one of the best updates ever! And it’s not even car related.
We need part 2. Love to see how is the outcome

should be E is for Epic!
Lol you have an app thats "essentially" a radar?
No. You don't. Like, at all.
I believe you're think about a weather radar.... A radar on a boat is an actual radar to display signatures of other objects in the water and can show everything down to a bird sitting on the water 1/2 mile or more away. It's crucial for ANY boater to have that does real cruising on large waterways. You get caught in fog, you're FUCKED without it.
If he has AIS on it, its a little bit like radar.
Yeah, this is what happens when idiots have money to buy this sort of boat.
@@jplxlabelle1681 radar uses electromagnetic waves, not sound. sound waves are used for sonar

I gotta say I enjoyed your first episode. Your happy, she’s happy, bed works ! Life is good. Looks really good. It’s so exciting when you buy your first boat. I’ve heard bad stories when people change boat name lol. Hopefully not for you two. Would love to attend your new boat party but I live in Dallas Texas. Dah. Happy for y’all.

Already worth half what he paid for it...

TJ Hunt: "We bought a Million dollar Yacht from the 90s"
Man, you almost killed a beautiful Riva. A Riva doesn't get old, she only becomes more stylish. You Americanized it and killed that Italian flare that drew you to her. One should approach to boats like this like restorer of art. Keeping it as original as possible, but making everything work. Respect her man, she is something special.
I personally have a 25m piciotti myself so I do love an Italian boat. You vessel is stunning. A real Italian vessel! I must say the furniture fit you have done on the outside of your vessel is appalling! Such a stunning vessel deserves a better fit out not just ikea furniture!
Not to mention once the weather is a bit choppy and that garden furniture starts flying around...
jolakki exactly. None of that taken into account. It’s what happens when people who have no yachting knowledge buy a vessel🤷♂️
@@TheDrew1234able I really need you to curb your use of the term "vessel."
Mike Bircher i don’t give a fuck what you want me to curb
Ok, wessel? Is that better checkov???
So smoke on startup and smoke when wide open........ Yup, I think Identified the problem........... It's a diesel engine.
On a boat diesel is much better. Safer, more efficient and ones it's running drains no battery.
And a Cummins to boot, known smokers, just look at any Cummins powered truck. If really smokey get the calibration of the injector pump checked but replace air filter first, there're a lot cheaper than a pump overhaul, not that they should get very dirty on a boat.
The Cummins is just doing what it does there is nothing wrong with it
White smoke in diesels can also be a lean condition. Could be as simple as semi plugged fuel filters. Sweet boat btw.
Clean the injectors and give it a good service when Diesel engines smoke is a sign that it’s making POWER
this episode of the "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" is brought to you by Dollar Tree. When you are looking to add that special something in boat decor.
Hairyparrot Very Funny 😄 😂😂😂
Don't know if he still has this boat but if he does then it must mean that it's in his blood. As most long-time boaters know, they are attracted to the water, boating, waves, the sea, fish...just being on or near the latter becomes an obsession and that paradigm gives a feeling that others don't get. Loving the sea/water and being part of it is in some peoples genes. Those who are not attracted to the sea/boating life should not judge those who are because they just don't understand it nor feel it. It really is a wonderful life for those who love it and no amount of money is too much to keep it that way. peace
Warning ⚠️
the layer of resin that you put on the table if it is not for sea use it will get yellow and it will crack
Yeah, and I hope that was marine plywood he was using for the table and bench.

No no no, how to tow a boat with 1000hp ls swapped Lamborghini ;)
m H wow!! thats way better!!
a tip for your boat interior. fiberglass, gelcoat, foam, marine vinyl. not garden furniture XD
Radar doesn't use stations, it sends out radio waves to look for objects and helps guide you in times of inclement weather.
Also, get a good sonar/depth meter/chartplotter, it will help you GREATLY.
It is a Riva! Make it look like it did when delivered...because they came just perfect from the factory.
“You better believe I’m gonna call it a yacht until the day I die” 😂😂
But names her "B is for Boat," not "Y is for Yacht?" 🤔
Been a Diesel mechanic many years first thing you want to do is change inlet air filters for those Cummins engines ,that would be my first step ,good luck guys and congrats on a nice boat ..
Engine problem? Only solution double LS swap
While that's a great idea, I think you may have missed the part where he said it's a diesel engine. A gas engine swap would be a really cool build, but INSANELY hard and labor intensive
