The date says 1979 while the music playing is from the 1982 signals album. Geddy is talking about the new album due to be released in January titled permanent waves. In 1979 Rush was still touring the hemispheres album an when they came to Dayton, Ohio they played a song that will be on their new album called freewill. They were working so hard back then.
The interview was done before and then it was put onto what ever television show this is LATER. Notice how it said "Let's step back in time" at the beginning
ANY artist in Canada; Nickelback, Alanis Morrisette, Shania Twain, and yes, even Justin Beiber owe everything to Rush for being such a cool band and putting Canada on the musical map.
I love that first album, only it's on moon records, and the rush logo is red.I first seen them by the city hall,John Rutsey was their drummer then.I still love RUSH.
Countdown and Subdivisions are from the Signals album (1982), but I'm pretty sure the interview with Geddy Lee was from the mid 70s, so something is wierd with the timing, here.
Yeah, he's talking about Permanent Waves and the 10 min song he refers to is "Natural Science". This clip is from the City TV program 'The New Music" featuring a pre CNN JD Roberts. Rush rules y'all.
I love rush, but i respectfully disagree. Judas Priest did a lot of really progressive stuff in the 70s (mainly the S trilogy; Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin, Stained Class)
THAT was just AMAZING! The facts and figures are amazing (I knew it had to cost a fortune to tour), and it's amazing how young they were! Thanks for sharing!!!
Ray Daniels was largely responsible for causing the first breakup of “Van Hagar” in 1996. He stirred up a LOT of shit between the brothers and Sammy causing them to turn on each other. Plus, he forced them into things that they weren’t on board with, like the songs for the Twister movie and the Greatest Hits volume 1. He’s all about money and nothing else . At least he was with Van Halen. In fact, Alex Van Halen was married to Ray’s sister very briefly in 1983. It lasted either 2 weeks or 2 months… one of the two It’s actually astonishing that RUSH never let Ray go at one point
When you have to dig way back into the recesses of the vault to find a video that's digging way back into the recesses of the vault that band's been around a frickin long time.
I was reading something about Jimmy page and he was asked is there any newer bands that he liked.he said he liked that band rush, this was in the seventies.
The interviewer (at 1:43) is Canada's own JOHN ROBERTS, very young! Today is the anchor of CNN's "American Morning" in the USA. I remember when John was a MuchMusic host (Canada's MTV) when I was in elemantary school !
@astrophysics123 The broadcast is from some years later. Much Music didn't start until 84 or 85, I think. Now, why they chose those particular songs, and not say something from Grace Under Pressure, I don't know.
I guess I missed when Jacobs Ladder is being played. The clips are from SIgnals (1982) and I guess their "next album" is Moving Pictures (1981), 10-min-piece being Camera Eye. Cool videos in spite of the "Lost"-time-travelling.
They invented prog/metal and influenced a lot of metal bands. They were one of the heaviest bands of the 70's and that's nothing to be ashamed of. Great band but prefer their heavier stuff. They got a bit soft with the keyboards in the mid to late 80's
But then in the middle and at the end of the interview, they are playing Subdivisions and a clip of Countdown which was on their 1982 Album Signals. Must have been a later interview than 1979.
@RCAvhstape Yeah the Geddy interview looks like it takes place before Permanent Waves in 1981 since he mentions the change in direction with only one "10 minute song". They must have recycled footage.
The title is a little bit deceiving because this video and interview are not from 1979. MuchMusic did not exist back then and this is when Signals was released in 1982. So it's interviews from the 1982/1983 Signals Tour.
I don't get it, they're asking Geddy Lee about the 'new album' and that interview from 1979. At that point Rush were working on Permanent Waves. Yet the video shows clips from Countdown and Subdivisions from the Signals album released in 1982...
@MrPelicanPants Agreed, Phil Collins era was so radically different. What did you think of the single GTR album with Hackett and Howe? My roommate, a guitarist, loved gtr but hated Yes and Genesis. I liked a lot of Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte, which is what I think he made right after leaving Genesis. Lifeson loved that album, so I checked it out.
Let's not forget that Ray Danniels (the correct spelling of his name) once fired Geddy (before their first album was released) and it was John that was able to convince Ray and Geddy to come back. Ray Daniels is also responsible for Sammy Hagar getting let go with Van Halen and replaced by Gary Cherone. Ray Danniels has a track record of poor decision making throughout his career, and honestly, would be a nobody if it wasn't for Rush.
Some of that was kind of mish-mashed. The year is 1979, Rush hadn't released Moving Pictures yet, but some of the video footage includes songs from Signals. The brief interview with Geddy at the end is....memory....I've seen it before....I think when they were touring with Permanent Waves and working on Moving Pictures. Not a big deal, old Rush footage is always fun to see. (Also Ray Daniels spells his name Danniels.)
@MrPelicanPants Do you think Genesis gave Hackett enough spotlight time? Lifeson is more prominent in Rush's music than Hackett was to Genesis to me at least. Neil Peart described Genesis as a keyboard dominated band, and Lifeson was the main melody in Rush up until signals. What do you think?
This is from 1979? At 1:10 there is footage of the song Countdown from the album Signals....but that wasn't released until 1982...the soundcheck is from 79? Or the interview?
A look into the past at a Look into the the past. how did JD Roberts get that wrong, Neil Joined after the first Album was released and they did a half tour with John Rutsy. Minor detail but John can not be forgotten. and has not been, I found a top ten list looking something else up. Readers’ Poll: 10 Greatest Rush Albums 1 'Signals' 2 'Rush' 3 'Clockwork Angels' 4 'Counterparts' 5 'A Farewell to Kings' 6 'Grace Under Pressure' 7 '2112' 8 'Power Windows' 9 'Moving Pictures' 10 'Hemispheres' I don't now If I would rank it that high but it is a complete album and a excellent debut, I can't think of any songs that have aged badly, "In the mood" was wrecked by over play.
lol, did anyone notice that when they named them they said the names all wrong. "These three guys: Geddy Lee (while the camera is on Alex) Alex Lifeson (camera on Neil) who couldn't pay a record-company to release their first album"... and yeah... since when did Rush start playing heavy metal? Media artards..
Yes. You`re deffintly right. Heavy Metal has changed, its meaning has. imagine: JETHRO TULL (blues n prog rock) won an award for being the best Heavy Metal Band ever, so as you can see, the meaning is different now. But in my personal oppinion, I think thaat there are a lot of ppl talking about heavy metal, heavy rock, heavy prog, brutal rock, TERROR PUNK (?), and stuff.... MUSIC IS MUSIC... stop puting names on it, just listen what you like and done. :D
Love Rush.I have to say this though by the looks of the picture that heads up the post it looks like a muppet is being interviewed.Geddy would love this if he sees this reply here.Funny stuff eh?
Perhaps but the show done @ Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, ON Canada on Aug.24, 1979 had ~8,000 fans paying $12.50/ticket. So do the math...that's $100G gross; therefore 10% ("$10,000 a day to keep the equipment on the road") wasn't exactly an unreasonable figure...no?!??
@MrPelicanPants man there first albums sounds soooo different then fly by night fly by night is more modern then the first one and carres of steel was underated but on of there most prog album next to hemispheres a farewell to kings and 2112 then permanent waves was not as prog but more modern short songs
I LOVE THIS THIS KICKS ASS AND IT IS AWESOME!!! I WANNA GO BACK TO THE YEAR 1979 and 1980 IT WAS SUCH A WILD TIME!!!!
I was never a Rush fan but as I've gotten older I appreciate how great they were.
Never a Geddy Lee fan from his sound 🎤
My favorite band of all time.
So many things fell into place for rush.. but they’re responsible for their success. They never compromised.. they earned this on their own.
Archive classic ! This is fantastic footage, thanks for sharing ! Go GEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Spheres ,still their best album
But its playing stuff from signals 82
The interview was done before and then it was put onto what ever television show this is LATER.
Notice how it said "Let's step back in time" at the beginning
That interview with Geddy (from '79) is on the R30 bonus DVD.
Long live Rush. :)
Why is it playing Countdown?
Neil is looking damn good with those cool sunglasses on.
ANY artist in Canada; Nickelback, Alanis Morrisette, Shania Twain, and yes, even Justin Beiber owe everything to Rush for being such a cool band and putting Canada on the musical map.
This dude never heard of the Guess Who, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, The Band etc.. etc..
Yeah, ZERO sense of History! 😒
Gosh the hair styles were outstanding back then!
I love that first album, only it's on moon records, and the rush logo is red.I first seen them by the city hall,John Rutsey was their drummer then.I still love RUSH.
Loved finding this...
Countdown and Subdivisions are from the Signals album (1982), but I'm pretty sure the interview with Geddy Lee was from the mid 70s, so something is wierd with the timing, here.
This is a MASHUP clip from Much Music in Toronto which included a clip from 1982's Signals
how sick is that short clip of Jacobs Ladder.. Would love to hear the whole tune.
Yeah, he's talking about Permanent Waves and the 10 min song he refers to is "Natural Science". This clip is from the City TV program 'The New Music" featuring a pre CNN JD Roberts. Rush rules y'all.
Rush is not necessarily heavy metal, but they were the first to venture into the world of progressive metal.
I love rush, but i respectfully disagree. Judas Priest did a lot of really progressive stuff in the 70s (mainly the S trilogy; Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin, Stained Class)
@@mybluguitar6051 Sad Wings of Destiny.... great album..... but it came out after 2112.
I would argue that King Crimson was one of the first
Rush is not heavy metal, they are progressive hard rock, all due respect.
THAT was just AMAZING! The facts and figures are amazing (I knew it had to cost a fortune to tour), and it's amazing how young they were! Thanks for sharing!!!
Rush is Rush, no one like them they are their own rock music catagory
Ray Daniels reminds me of Sam Kinnison in this video! Keep waiting for him to start yelling.... "AAH...AAH...!!!!!"
Yeah, that haircut is criminal - Daniels is a smart manager though.
This is some real cool & epic footage but why on earth didn't I see it earlier?? It's on YT for 6+ years!!! ***facepalm***

It’s actually astonishing that RUSH never let Ray go at one point
I cant believe it!!! amazing. Thanks a lot for this.
If the Geddy interview was from 79 he was talking about Permanent Waves, which was released New Years day 1980. 10 minute piece being Natural Science.
When you have to dig way back into the recesses of the vault
to find a video that's digging way back into the recesses of the vault
that band's been around a frickin long time.
What a f#ckin' great comment
The song Geddy is talking about being about 10 minutes long is "The Camera Eye" off of Moving Pictures which clocks in at 10:59.
He was talking about Natural Science from Permanent Waves.......
Ray Daniels = Awesome Hair! Lol
I was reading something about Jimmy page and he was asked is there any newer bands that he liked.he said he liked that band rush, this was in the seventies.

@RCAvhstape The soundcheck and Geddy's interview footage are from '79.
lol @ heavy metal.
YEsss .. sounds awesome!!! Nice clip.. I need more of these rare clips to be uploaded on here! Anyone got more?? Please get them on here! :-) Ty
Remember the guy that scalped tickets in Fast Times at Ridgemont High? That was Ray Daniels.
check from 33 seconds on in the clip... about 12 seconds of the middle portion of Jacob's Ladder...
I love that they are reffered to as "heavy metal" :D differenet times i guess
Progressive Rock best describes their music.
First album had John Rutsey playing drums. Neil came after that.
I like how they back tracked the interview and added older videos. that is cool! well at the time what 2 years later?
hahahaha i love how they said the wrong names for the band members at the beggining
0:33 - 0:43 behind the narration
Funny hearing J.D. Roberts describe them as a 'heavy metal' band at the beginning lol
Bizarre to hear songs from Signals in there.
Their first few albums all have some pretty heavy songs on them. It's at least hard rock.
They invented prog/metal and influenced a lot of metal bands. They were one of the heaviest bands of the 70's and that's nothing to be ashamed of. Great band but prefer their heavier stuff. They got a bit soft with the keyboards in the mid to late 80's
Got soft on "Hold Your Fire."
the Geddy interview is talking about the Camera Eye from moving pictures of course.
Rush "heavy metal". They would love that.
But then in the middle and at the end of the interview, they are playing Subdivisions and a clip of Countdown which was on their
1982 Album Signals. Must have been a later interview than 1979.
This clip is a montage of different interviews.
The thumbnail made me think they were interviewing the grinch
Ray Daniels, thanks for almost destroying Van Halen
Is it just me or did I not hear Jacobs Ladder at any time during this clip???
Starts at 33 seconds in, for a few seconds. It's there.
they did get way softer in the 80s but their technique and creativity soared even more.
So it's interviews from the 1982/1983 Signals Tour.
they always seem to!
@MrPelicanPants How about Steve Hackett and Steve Howe? Didn't he write Camera Eye as a tribute to Genesis? I read that in guitar world once.
@ACEBAKER911 That whole album is the most underrated Rush song of all time.....
I don't get it, they're asking Geddy Lee about the 'new album' and that interview from 1979. At that point Rush were working on Permanent Waves. Yet the video shows clips from Countdown and Subdivisions from the Signals album released in 1982...

I liked a lot of Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte, which is what I think he made right after leaving Genesis. Lifeson loved that album, so I checked it out.
@gottarush Yeah, Countdown is also on the 1982 Signals album and that is featured too. The date has got to be wrong
Did anyone hear Jacobs Ladder for the sound check?
@MrPelicanPants that is true also the added in one interview they also like pink floyd another greatband
Agreed....and having met him a couple of times over the years, I would add he's quite the @sshole arrogant sob. Not a nice human
He also was directly connected to the demise of max webster. Kim mitchell dissolved it to get away from danniels
It all lies
Oh yeah, you're right, I missed it.
Some of that was kind of mish-mashed. The year is 1979, Rush hadn't released Moving Pictures yet, but some of the video footage includes songs from Signals. No, he's talking about Natural Science. This was just before Permanent Waves was released.
Ray really look like Fat Alex from the Time Machine spoofs lolololololz
This would have been a 82-3 broadcast if they show countdown from signals
@MrPelicanPants Do you think Genesis gave Hackett enough spotlight time? Lifeson is more prominent in Rush's music than Hackett was to Genesis to me at least. Neil Peart described Genesis as a keyboard dominated band, and Lifeson was the main melody in Rush up until signals. What do you think?
I wouldn't call Rush heavy metal. I would call them GODS though. prog / classic rock.
Rush is psuedo-metal, they feel of their music is metal, double bass, lots of low down bass parts, guitar is most on bottom strings, ect ect
good
This is from 1979? At 1:10 there is footage of the song Countdown from the album Signals....but that wasn't released until 1982...the soundcheck is from 79? Or the interview?
Why are they playing "Countdown" from Signals near the beginning if this is from 1979?
A look into the past at a Look into the the past.
how did JD Roberts get that wrong, Neil Joined after the first Album was released and they did a half tour with John Rutsy. Minor detail but John can not be forgotten. and has not been, I found a top ten list looking something else up.

Ray Daniels looks like he is out of Spinal Tap.
agreed
Jacobs Ladder? Did I miss something? Did they confuse Countdown with Jacobs Ladder?
countdown!
:36 PEART!
Love Rush.I have to say this though by the looks of the picture that heads up the post it looks like a muppet is being interviewed.Geddy would love this if he sees this reply here.Funny stuff eh?
What song is 1:10
@Kohntarkosz yeah it makes more sense, then
heavy metal band.... ha!
All hard rock back then was considered metal
How could it be 1979 if "Countdown" was placed? You have a time machune?
Where is Jacobs Ladder soundcheck?
"$10,000 a day to keep the equipment on the road"?
seems a bit high for late 70s
Perhaps but the show done @ Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, ON Canada on Aug.24, 1979 had ~8,000 fans paying $12.50/ticket. So do the math...that's $100G gross; therefore 10% ("$10,000 a day to keep the equipment on the road") wasn't exactly an unreasonable figure...no?!??
Btw, asg2112, where IS Jacob's Ladder in this clip? Wth?
Countdown rules.
It is heavy metal in seventies :)
The bootlegs exist :]
Very true... hmm... Rush rocks anyway!
Knell look at Terry ,tell he managed Van Halen lol
@MrPelicanPants man there first albums sounds soooo different then fly by night fly by night is more modern then the first one and carres of steel was underated but on of there most prog album next to hemispheres a farewell to kings and 2112 then permanent waves was not as prog but more modern short songs
REBUILD HISTORIC "LESTUDIO" CANADA YEH!!!!!!!!EH!
Even this guy says Neils Name wrong!
