this was recorded right out when he was diagnosed in early 2016
@ rutsey was not a great drummer. yes he was their first but this band never would have became what they were without neil. as much as i love geddy being a bassist and singer myself, and of course all of alex's great work, neil was rush. and i think the other 2 would say that themselves. without neil they probably would have just continued on doing brainless rock like the first album. he was the heartbeat of rush from fly by night through the end. no such thing as rush as we all know without neil.
Rutsey was a solid drummer. But it didn't work out for him. Neil was the man, though. Kudos to Geddy for respecting the wishes of Neil and his family to not disclose Neil's illness. Geddy is a great human being.
@@trenken With Rutsey, they could have been more popular earlier as his direction was more toward a standard rock band. A few more albums and they might have found that top 10 hit

That girl is the best interviewer I have ever seen. She was so relaxed asked all the right questions and knew what she was talking about and most importantly knew WHO she was interviewing. Fabulous job young lady

Neil lost his daughter (car accident) and his wife in the space of 10 months…He wrote lyrics and over 12 novels.

Geddy and Alex were so strong, being able to do all the PR stuff, and not let on about Neil's situation. The more I watch videos etc., the more I recognise what immense love and respect they have for one another. Sending heartfelt love and condolences to ALL the Rush family in this very difficult period. We have so much to be grateful for, we really do.

Geddy is seriously the most humble dude to be on a stage. Such a cool guy.
I think Geddy nailed it when he said, “ I feel like out humor is the 4th member of the band “ I have always felt that people see these 3 guys, and feel the friendship they have as a big part of the band, It doesn’t hurt that the music is amazing , but people can feel how much they care for each other and that is very clearly out in the open. I really think that is the key to why fans are so strong and loyal to them.
It's a strange kind of relationship wherein the band admits that humor is a huge part of their life, yet some of the fan base get so rigid and have a sense of self righteousness in their love for the band.
A little bit of me died when Neil Peart passed. He meant so much to me throughout my life.

Same here brother. I learned to drum because of him , read all his books , loved his lyrics and Rush themselves have gotten me through hard times since I was 15 ....42 now. I totally feel the same as you. Their music is part of our internal makeup....and part of us went with him.

My father played Rush for me in our car ever since I was 5 years old and I never looked back. He unfortunately passed away when I was 14, I’m 24 now and can happily say I’m a musician because of that initial shock of hearing Hemispheres. He was into bands like Yes, Crimson, Genesis, and Floyd as well, hearing all that stuff at a young age really made quite the impression.

Rush and ZZTop have two different musical styles and are two different bands but always admired how both bands have 3 people who are so down to earth with no egos and just enjoy making music together and respect each other.
As a huge fan of Rush, I have to say HUGE RESPECT to Kylie Olsson for being a great interviewer on this. Faultless! :)

It's painful I feel for Geddy having to sit through it.
This band NEVER disappoints me. I'm 69 years young and I've been a Rock fan since I was 10. They are the ultimate musicians and Geddy is such a special singer. For those that don't care for his voice, I suppose they don't and will never enjoy OPERA. I'm not saying that Geddy's voice is like an Opera singer but I am saying his voice is very special. His bass playing is simply spectacular and the fact that he can play the Bass Pedals and play the organ at the same time is terrific. Alex's guitar playing is like no one else's. He doesn't play Blues licks. He plays Rush licks. Again totally original. Neil as everyone knows was one of the greatest drummers of any era. Without Neil, they wouldn't have been the same band. He was a very different/special man who's last years of his life were horrible. It makes it difficult for me to believe in GOD. May the memories of the band RUSH live on.

That's going overboard. Rush was excellent, but I can find a better musician for each of them.
Their ranking as musicians is immaterial. The greater an artist gets, the more difficult it is to compare them, and the more useless such comparisons get. It's what they did as a unified force that matters. Were any of the Beatles the greatest on their instruments? Laughable. But were the band's contributions great? We all know the answer to that.
Geedy is just so incredibly likeable.
All my life I have been so enamored by the jack swigging, coke fueled, rehab riddled, rock n rollers and all along this dude is by far one of if not the nicest, coolest rockin' rollers of them all.

Just had to note how on top of it this Kylie Olsson is. She asks interesting questions in a natural progression, and never really falls back rote fluff like so many Music Personality interviewers. She seems more interested in Geddy Lee & Rush than just trying to get a slick interview package done. Well done Ms. Ollson.

Hey man, even if watching the doc and taking notes were all the homework she'd done, I still think that put's her in the upper 90%. However, to me it seemed like she had processed more of the band's history, but that could just be her chops.

It's not a bad interview at all, but the questions were pretty much presented to give a cliff notes version of Beyond The Lighted Stage. I don't mean to sound overly critical, but it is what it is.
Where she started to make it more interesting was when she asking "what's next".
i met Geddy Lee at the pilot tavern in Toronto in the early 80's. He looked busy so it was just a hello. and he was very polite. so the rumors are all true. Geddy is good boy !!

Geddy always so composed and collected he has to, I mean this guy sings, plays the bass, switch in a flick of a second to keyboards while playing the taurus pedals at the same time. He's able to do that in front of a ferociously fanatical live audience counting in the thousands almost evey night for well over forty years. Those other two guys really had it "easy".😏

Kylie did an amazing job. She really gained Geddy's respect as it continued. Bonamassa comment at the end was really the icing on the cake.
When I saw them in San Jose on this last tour and I realized they were working backwards in time and changing the stage each time, the music nerd in me thought of it as an homage to Haydn's "Farewell Symphony". Haydn and his orchestra had been working for a Prince at a rural palace, away from their families and the Prince had kept them way past when they were supposed to be back. During the symphony, each section completed their bit and then would blow out their candles at their stand and quietly leave the stage, until there was just a couple of them left. The Prince got the message and let them go the next day.
I agree with a lot of comments here, Olson carried out an excellent interview and Geddy, what a gem of as guy.

This is my fav of all interviews of Rush. The interviewer was terrifically conversational and genuinely curious. Sadly this interview could’ve taken place just months before Neil’s diagnosis. RIP Professor.
One of Geddy's best interviews.
It always strikes me as odd, this "dirty little secret band" ? I was a kid in Sa TX. We were granted the extreme goodwill to have been introduced to Rush in the early 70's. There was no secret, no blushing cheeks to have been a person who was moved by the music of Rush. They were ALWAYS on top for all of us. Rush rocked our world, and we were made better for it. Still today, I am moved by Rush as much as I was when I was a kid first listening to this awesome band. No matter the terribly awful "music" that has been imposed upon me from "main stream" crap since the inception of this phenomenal trio. Maybe because of this, I truly couldn't say. But I do know this, I was blessed to have been able to know their sound since I began understanding and growing as an individual in this awful society that I had to endure to navigate life. Like many other beings, Rush helped me to maintain, to have hope visited through their sound and lyrics that helped me to continue. Also, I know that you can't hear me Geddy, but Thank you so very very much brother.
Right i remember buying the first record in 1974 ,then fly by night in 76 on 8 track tape as a kid it texas.The rednecks gave me and my long haired friends shit over this band and we just laughed at them and called them all goat ropers and stuck our lips out at then ...
He's so laid back and relaxed, completely different from the energetic singing. Awesome singer! Awesome bass! Awesome band!

What a great interview. The fact that Kylie is lovely and has a great voice does not hurt; however, I loved her questions and anticipated Geddy's answers - which to me is the sign of a good interview.
The true concern, trust,friendship and overall compassion that surrounds the trio of Rush is such a wonderful amazing relationship. You can see and hear these emotions in Geddy's voice and face when he speaks about the tragedies that happened in The Professors life. I will be forever grateful I got to see Rush live on many occasions, and will be a fan until my final curtain call. Thank you for all the amazing music, Neil you are deeply missed by millions.

Never heard of her before but this is one of the smartest interviews I have ever seen. An actual 'journalist' rather than a "reporter" Genuine thought into the questions.
Rush were my first ever concert, and it was a mind blowing experience I'll never forget. These guys are nothing short of legends.
I caught this tour at the LA Forum. It was a great night.
This was an incredible interview. It caused me to reflect back on many aspects of what Rush meant to me as a musician. When I was a young Canadian kid in the 1970's I was given a charity benefits cassette tape where up-and-coming artists had donated their music to raise money for a charity. The first song on it was "Working Man" by Rush. Ever since then, Rush was my favorite rock band. They inspired all of us young musicians to really think outside of the constraints of how our music teachers taught us (not to dismiss the importance of fundamental theory, though!). Rush is a proud part of Canadian heritage in a way, love them or hate them, as a Canadian you know them, and as a non-Canadian, Rush makes you think of Canada. I remember getting together with a local drummer, as a teenager, who showed us 7/4 time and how to count it. Now, I'm in my 40's. I looked over at my old bass guitar that had not been played so much for the past 8 years (I spent more time with MIDI, in the home studio). I thought, "how did life get so busy for me to just let that bass sit there?" I had "Limelight" memorized from playing in cover bands when I was young, so that was the first song to really come back to me. I stepped up and got back to music lessons, now I'm playing every day and it's changing my life again for the better. My wife is learning guitar for the first time, and playing music is something that is slowly bringing us together. Rush has always been inspirational, their concerts fun, their music involved and intricate, even experimental. This interview was really excellent, made me really think about what's important, and how influential and emotional the medium of music is to people and how we can either stagnate and hold on to our past, or continue to evolve and progress like Geddy Lee talks about here in this interview. Thanks Kylie Olsson, fantastic work. And thanks to anyone who read this far, probably my longest youtube comment ever.

@@kathypiazza7228 I absolutely agree, I was being sarcastic. Especially, seeing it was us the music fans in Cleveland, who actually put RUSH on the map when nobody else would give them a shot really. Specifically a lady named Donna Halper, who was a radio DJ & music director for WMMS in Cleveland who is credited with discovering RUSH in 1974. When she played RUSH on radio spinning the song "Working Man" that is 7 minutes long, (unheard of in radio play) but did it anyway and immediately caught our ears, and loaded the stations phone lines by requests to play it again and again! Donna is still very close friends with Geddy & Alex, RIP Neil. "TIME MACHINE 2011: LIVE IN CLEVELAND” was the band’s first live album recorded in the US, and a deliberate nod of gratitude to the fans of Cleveland the first city that supported RUSH on radio & record sales in the start of their career. So, RUSH was never underrated here in Cleveland either. ++Peace, & Rock n' Roll++

In my opinion, Rushs' longevity and growing fan base is due to stellar musicianship, commitment to their fans, putting musical and artistic goals ahead of monetary gain, and the fact that they are first rate guys! RIP Neil Peart.

Funny that I stumbled upon this interview because I was out with a musician friend of mine talking about them last night. He mentioned how amazing it is to see Geddy lee in concert(I have but didn’t notice this detail) He would sometimes I guess more during the digital times be doing 4 things at once . That would be the base on the neck, the keyboard with the other hand, the foot pedal and also sing. As he mentioned Here he was glad To go back to analog songs in the 80s where he could just play base and not wear himself out. Talented guy.

Of course, we as fans want to know, but there is a time and place to bring something like that up. That interview was neither the time nor the place.

Kylie Olsson: fantastic job. Engaging, appropriately respectful yet very insightful while still leading the discussion into interesting and naturally fluid ways. Most importantly, always remembering to let the interviewee speak.
Of course, it never hurts when your interviewee is as well-spoken, thoughtful and open as Geddy Lee. :)

@Jeff Oliver I think that's the point Jeff. I'm not trying to be argumentative when I say this, but some saw the interview and others listened to the interview. I put it on while driving and very soon noticed that the questions didn't lend themselves to a very informative interview. It was equivalent to being asked to write about a movie and just reading the back of the DVD and solely using that information.
Rush is not atheist.

@@jms980 Different strokes for different folks. If you're a true Rush fan you'd likely try to live life a bit more emblematic of that mindset. Clearly your in-car listening of a videotaped interview colored your views, just as watching the video may have colored mine. Still, I absolutely stand by my initial opinion and assessment. You're of course free to disagree as I am equally free to disregard your opinion. Cheers....

What made this interview even better was the fact the interviewer was such a huge rush fan which geddy picked up on and it and I think he enjoyed it more.
Love the Band Rush ever since the first time of heard them which was back in 1978! I was the only kid in Junior High school who was listening to them and wearing their Tee Shirts! Still a big Fan to this day!
For once, the interviewer has good questions. And she researched too! My God, the last real journalist. Nice job.

Really? One of my least favorite (sonically) of their records.
Very thin, very plastic sound. There were some good songs... basically, all the even numbered tracks on the album. The odd numbered tracks I didn't care for as much. Except "Territories", that wasn't bad.
After "Grace Under Pressure" (also a bit thin but not nearly as bad as albums like "Power Windows", "Presto" and "Roll the Bones"), I think the next decent sounding one they made was "Counterparts". Though "Hold Your Fire" wasn't bad.
Color and taste are what they are. You should never think that you are a reference.
This band is good enough to allow themselves strong variations in their style, so some people don't like it all.
I am fond of Power Windows' vocals, lyrics, and Wal bass sound. Alex is sort of sidelined on the album though, and even in the remaster, there's an overall thinness. It's definitely one of the more divisive Rush albums; numerous diehard fans completely hate it. But many of us like it at least somewhat, and I was very happy with its revisitation on the Clockwork Angels tour.
It's amazing that we even have Geddy Lee, considering his parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors from Poland who had survived the ghetto in Starachowice (where they met), followed by their imprisonments at Auschwitz and later Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during the Holocaust and World War II.
And if thats not enough? They were separated at some point, where his mother was transferred to Bergen-Belsen and his father to Dachau. After the camps were liberated, his father searched for his mother at the Bergen-Belsen displaced persons camp...... And FOUND HER!
Like I say. It's amazing we even have Geddy!
