This relationship dynamic becomes a bit weirder (and a bit mature for a "kids' cartoon") however, since Simon's crazy "alter-ego" the Ice King actually has/had an obsession with Bonnibel Bubblegum, and we all know how she and Marcy were/are a thing, but this is all for now.

Back then, we were rooting for Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable. Now, it's two girls named Luz Noceda and Amity Blight.
Back then, we hesitantly depended on extreme measures and other unthinkable acts. Now, we appear to be embracing them, whether we like 'em or not.
Back then, we only paid attention to singular events in cartoons. Now, we are expecting many Multiversal outcomes like another Weirdmageddon or another Cleaving.
Back then, animation was very much limited in fluidness and action due to many reasons. Now, almost every cartoon we watch has at least one or two superbly animated sequences every season.
I would like to answer more "back thens", but then it would make me a bit too tired of typing and thinking.

Every aspect of Marceline changes; her physical appearance, outfits, hairstyle, etc but also her style of music it goes from emo, talking about everything she resents, fears, regrets, to stuff which shows he’s more at peace with existence and accepts who she is. Truely the character who has grown the most since debut.
Honestly, Marcy and Bubblegum's relationship is easily one of the best-handled relationships I've ever seen on a TV show, especially one meant for a younger audience. Congrats on the creators for doing such an awesome job!
