I am grateful we do have a well stocked pantry and I shop the sales, unfortunately my husband is not so budget aware. He goes down these rabbit holes after watching a few too many prepper videos. Hope and Larry I am so glad you have taught people to negotiate. I have an outside faucet I need repaired, live way out in the country, no plumber but one would consider fixing the faucet and wanted a ridiculous amount to fix the faucet. While in town today I actually went by the office and pleaded my case about wanting to use their services but needed a price break. They took 119.00 off of a cash price and I can live with the final estimate. The plumber is coming tomorrow to fix the faucet.
Yesterday, I had the opposite problem. I had to convince myself that I could buy a modestly priced dress just because I wanted it. I have an event to go to that requires being a bit dressy. I had decided what I could wear from my closet, but yesterday while looking for a clothing item I really need at a “reduced-price” retailer, I saw a dress I love - bright and summery and well-within my budget, but I had to stand there and tell myself more than once “sometimes it’s ok to buy something just because you want it.”
I have ADHD and one of my favorite impulsive/compulsive habits is dropping into the grocery store or Dollar Tree, etc. Something I love as a strategy is making a big outing of the weekly shop, and then if I want to do any extra pit stops, trying to make them $0 or a certain low limit like $5! Today I had 2 manufacturers coupons and gifted coffee to grind so I grabbed my 2 free products and used the grinder on my own coffee and left without spending a dime- best part was my reciept included a coupon for $5 of a $50 purchase for when it’s time to do the big grocery shop 😂
I have (usually) learned that if I overspend in one area, then I try to compensate by not spending as much in another or several other areas. My budget doesn't always work, but I still can put money away for those rainy days. I think I'm doing pretty good right now, even with inflation and living on Social Security.
What timing! I was having a pity party earlier, started crying and my automatic reaction was to start "window" shopping online. After prob 30 minutes I realized I was just scrolling- not finding anything I actually wanted. Plus, I already ordered some wants this week because of gift cards for my birthday. It was like a Pavlovian response to start shopping though! I ended up making myself get up and clean my kitchen. Not nearly as fun haha , but future me that does need or want something will be grateful for those gift card balances.

I will have to drop any expenses that I don't need at all. You are right about respect as well. Thanks for all you do. I am a car guy and used to buy cars and fix them up for myself but starting noticing that I was not able to catch up on my savings. The nail in the coffin was when I had to sell one of my nicest cars which lost so much value even after all the performance and aesthetic mods. As for status symbol, my status symbol is the ability to pay for things with cash and being able to negotiate cause of my current position while people of my family cannot pay for a car repair or unexpected events but they live in the nicest homes, drive the nicest cars and dress the sharpest. They are so used to plastic that I do not think they know how a paper dollar looks like...

Hi Hope and Larry. I’m pretty good with spending except for surprise bags. I just want to buy them all. I don’t , but it’s a temptation. I’m not sure why I find them so appealing other than they are really fun to open. After, I don’t care about them much because it’s rarely something I would have bought.
Your hair looks beautiful Hope! I overspend mostly on clothes/shoes/makeup/ that kind of stuff. It’s pretty bad because I don’t like clutter and I don’t end up keeping the same clothes. When I was a kid I was not allowed to have any toys or videos games, so I turned to clothing as my sense of creativity, putting outfits together and styling them became my toys. I still struggle today. I think the only thing I could do is a no spend challenge for a year to really force it upon myself, or else leaving all of my debit cards at home and only allowing myself to go around with $20 cash every week to limit myself. But that sounds too difficult
Hi. I tried the no spend challenge and found it way too restrictive. So, perhaps another way to tackle this is start in slow chunks. Take last month's spending and cut back 5% for this month. Next month try 7% less spending, then 10%, 15% etc. By doing things in small increments and keeping tabs on yourself, it may end up spurring you to do other things to help your spending. Now I find myself questioning things I place in my online cart with, hmmm is there something I already have that could do the same thing as this item? If yes, I delete that item. How many of this item do I already have? Am I down to my last one? No. Then delete that item. I still spend money, but am so much more willing to hit that delete from cart button. Hope this may help.
I used to shop, shop, shop and I think my best piece of advice to people struggling with that is to simply stay out of stores -- and stay off of shopping websites. If you don't see it, you won't "need" it.
I made so many mistakes. Buying silk pillow cover (supposedly anti aging). Expensive skincare - was taken in by PR. Buying a new fancy expensive mattress (supposed to get rid of aches and pains) - previous mattress was much better. The list goes on.
Regarding making a list before you shop, for impulse purchasers like me, that is crucial. I've also found that if I shop online & then do grocery pick-up, which is free (unlike delivery), I never step foot in the store, so I'm never tempted to buy things not on the list.
I never GOT cars as a status symbol.. to me it's about DEPENDABILITY and somewhat ...comfort. When I see someone with a 'prestige' car .. it makes me wonder about their personal self esteem.
Something I will say is our family learned a valuable lesson in purchasing a smaller sized car for our daughter. We usually purchase mid to large sized vehicles. She was in a major wreck and her car was totaled. We realized that she was hit in the only safe spot (the front tire) and be safe and basically escape injury. We instantly went back to a mid size car. Cost us more money than the smaller car. Money was irrelevant at that point. Some judge our daughter now bc she has a nice Lexus (and which was mom’s car with 90k miles). I’ve encouraged her to loving share her story and perhaps they will understand her position. Otherwise, it’s their opinion and nothing more.
One thing I learned about myself last year may help others. It is an awareness of the Diderot effect. Based on some historical story, it has to do with spending a little and then the item’s newness puts other items to shame and you buy more. Examples: 1) You buy new curtains….then you think you need to paint the walls…. Get new lamps… now the furniture looks shabby and you buy that and so on 2) You buy a new blouse, but you don’t have the skirt to go with it so you buy that….then shoes to complete the outfit….oh it needs a new necklace and earrings etc etc So one act of impulsive or even planned spending might snowball! Awareness to put on the brakes is what helps.
I find that after I buy something I need, it seems almost automatic to buy something that I want. For example, I went to the dollar store to buy 3 things I needed but walked out of the store with 5 additional things. I will use all of it and would eventually purchase those items anyway, but I didn't need them that day.
Julie Markham, I find I do the same thing. I do purchase items that I will eventually use, but I NOT need at that present time. I get irritated with myself for not keeping to my well planned out list. I wonder how I can keep to my list?
Such a timely video - this time of year, my spending tends to creep up (especially for “cute” outfits). But, I have a curated wardrobe; by going through and trying everything on, I realized there are only one or two things I want, not things I need. So I am sticking to my budget. Your video reminded me of this. Thank you so much for all you do. My boyfriend watches you too, we are frugal buddies. ❤
Hi Hope and Larry I was doing really well on not spending and sticking to my budget. I have noticed in the last 5 months my spending habits on things that I really don’t need mixed in with things I do need like food I some how have let stock piles get super low and can’t seem to keep money until the end of the month I find it hard to pay for items. I do live in Canada in British Columbia Vancouver and I am on disability which means I live off of $1,300.00 a month. I blessed that rent is $975.00 a month which super low I don’t have cable, hydro bill is $30 a month, tenant insurance $ 56 a month, paid laundry facilities $25 for second month, internet $60 a month that cheapest price those not the fastest,I don’t have a car so not spending money on gas, insurance or maintenance. Cheap cell phone service is $40 a month , $150.00 is groceries I have money put away for house cleaning $5 ,personal hygiene items $5 every month, It’s buy on credit card that gets me into trouble I was doing well and had it only for emergency I had card for years and never had a problem then Covid came and stores would only allow cards for that point on I have had trouble getting it paid off
Personally I know these dire times from Germany and might recommend to really cut down food for the time you need to pay off your credit card debt. Set a goal monthly to pay off (rates) and stick to it. You can eat from stored items and super low priced ingredients like oatmeal, wild herbs, pumpkin, banana, eggs or what you can find inspiring from low price recipes online and what your local store offers according to season. Do not cease from your set goal until you paid it all off. You can do that! 👍👍
Yes. I had the experience of going grocery shopping, spending a bunch of money, coming home looking at my purchases and wondering ‘where the real food is?’. I generally decide beforehand how much money I’m going to spend in total. This last time I tried something different that was helpful. Before I went to the store I first, like usual, decided how much I was going to spend in total, then I broke that down into categories, and decided how much I was going to spend in each category, and wrote that out on my list. $x for vegetables; $x for fruits; $x for breads and cereal; $x for dairy; $x for snacks; $x for meats, and $x for miscellaneous. It took a bit longer to shop, but each time I put an item in my cart, I subtracted on the list, it’s cost from its allotted category amount (I rounded up the amount): it worked so much better, I ended up getting more nutritious foods, stayed nicely in budget, and was actually able to afford some meat (I know you’re not meat eaters): previously I’d left getting meats to the end of shopping trip and was out of money by then, but not this time. I came in well under budget, got more nutritious foods and was very satisfied with my shopping experience. I also did my shopping alone, kids were at school, that helped too.
I have a cat and I use rolled oats ground in blender , next I grind salt and then I mix it altogether in a bowl and use a little cats pride flushable litter and baking soda and save a lot for cat litter I hope this is helpful
We recently paid off house and have good monthly income. What I realized now when I enter into a retail store is the level of disgust for the amount of unnecessary stuff that is for sale. I no longer have temptation to buy. If we didn’t have to eat I wouldn’t even grocery shop 😂😂 so over all the consumerism in this country!
Tupperware type parties. It is even worse when it is someone you barely know and they don't tell you the real reason for the party until you say you will attend. Oops, can't make it after all. I hate sales calls disguised as hospitality.
I think 20 years younger...Larry too.. What are you both eating? The hair looks lovely but it's also your face...you are glowing...about 35 years old and Larry looks 40
I can’t walk away from a house party without buying the item that the party was held to sell. Not because of want, need, or lack of self control, but guilt. So I don’t go.
Good video!! You mentioned being 25 years debt free. Can I aks what drives your frugal lifestyle? I was thinking when I'm 24 years debt free I woudl have a huge cash flow and not nees to be so frugal .
Some NEED to be frugal... others CHOSE to be frugal. I started out Frugal, but once I acqujred the money I began to accumulate so much STUFF... and that clutter began to drive me crazy... so I went a little bit 'minimalist' and it just felt so much better. A simplified life is much less stressful. I still have some nice things ... I love my hot tub, but I focus on keeping my day to day living pretty basic. I used to have an RV... now I camp in a tent.. in my own back yard! Talk about simple... and fun. 😊
I am a Jones prior to marrying. My section of the Joneses weren't worth keeping up with. I have a goal without a saving goals I can get sloppy. I also track daily on a calendar the number of days I spend and don't spend on.
When I go to the store, I have a problem of not following my list. I purchase items that I will eventually use, but I NOT need at that present time. I get irritated with myself for not keeping to my well planned out list. I wonder how I can keep to my list? Do you guys have any suggestions?
I agree, I am of that type myself. So If you really NEED to save your money I'd rather stick to the list. And if you're not TOTALLY SURE you will need the extra stuff at some point, better wait for the next special offer. Oftentimes you won't need it at all really.
Thank you!! 😁 We're trying out new styles to get ready for our son's wedding. I was VERY ready for an update with my hair and I wanted to have it done now so that when they get married in September the hairdresser can just trim it up for me. My hair was a mess and it took her over an hour to get it all trimmed and cut for me. I gave her a generous tip - and she definitely earned it.
I’m a sucker for sales. I bought a ring because it was 15 dollars off, then I decided to upgrade it and get a custom made ring, spending an extra 540usd. Now I am here trying to stop.

Regarding making a list before you shop, for impulse purchasers like me, that is crucial. I've also found that if I shop online & then do grocery pick-up, which is free (unlike delivery), I never step foot in the store, so I'm never tempted to buy things not on the list.
Ok off topic but I looooove your hair, Hope!
Thank you!! She cut off 8 inches and I love it!
Hope, white looks great on you, and your haircut is very nice as well.
Great information thanks so mych
One thing I learned about myself last year may help others. It is an awareness of the Diderot effect. Based on some historical story, it has to do with spending a little and then the item’s newness puts other items to shame and you buy more.
Examples:
1) You buy new curtains….then you think you need to paint the walls…. Get new lamps… now the furniture looks shabby and you buy that and so on
2) You buy a new blouse, but you don’t have the skirt to go with it so you buy that….then shoes to complete the outfit….oh it needs a new necklace and earrings etc etc
So one act of impulsive or even planned spending might snowball!
Awareness to put on the brakes is what helps.
Yes! I didn't even know there was a name for this phenomenon. Thank you for your helpful comment
@@katherinerichardson1767 Exactly!!
Before I buy something I need/want, I figure out if already own something that would work as an alternative.
Hope, your hair looks great in this video. (Coming from a hairdresser and an avid watcher of your channel)
Thank you! She took 8 inches off and I could not be happier with the cut.
Love your videos. Happy to hear more of your opinion about cars and transportation..
Love your hair!

Always such great information!Thank you🙂
Already hit the like button.😊
Thank you, Julie.
Hope, I love your hair!
Thank you. The hairdresser took off 8 inches and I love it!
Hope your hair looks great!!!
Inspiring video! Thanks ya'll
Pine pellets for liter is 8 dollars for a 40 pound bag at hardware store
Note everything. Oh God, I really like this gols.
Hope your hair looks exceptional beautiful today.
7:38 Actually blueprints have not been used for construction for many years. But yes, plans are still used.
Tupperware type parties. It is even worse when it is someone you barely know and they don't tell you the real reason for the party until you say you will attend. Oops, can't make it after all. I hate sales calls disguised as hospitality.
Do people still do that party sales thing anymore?
Hope you have beautiful thick hair 😊 Larry you one handsome guy and both funny.. love watching you guys. Learned a lot.
Hope, you look 10 years younger. 😊
Thank you so much! That's very kind of you to say.
Oh Hope I love your hair ❤😍
Thanks, friend! She took 8 inches off and I totally love it. I was very ready for a change.
You look very pretty today, Hope! 🌺
FOMO these days cause if you don’t buy it now the price keeps on going up with this inflation
Great haircuts you two 🙂
Hi,ware family!
Love the haircut,hope.
Thanks, Rochelle. I was really ready for a new look. She took off 8 inches and I'm super happy with it.
I’m a sucker for sales. I bought a ring because it was 15 dollars off, then I decided to upgrade it and get a custom made ring, spending an extra 540usd. Now I am here trying to stop.
