  • A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Lord's day morning 30th December 1855. Spurgeon was 21 years old.
Do you find that your whole life seems to be a round of toil and tasks? Here Spurgeon seeks to set us free to look to God for the supply of all our needs.
He several times preached that he disagreed with the prevailing view of Canaan. Many poets and writers saw the river Jordan as a symbol of death, and Canaan therefore as a symbol of heaven. Yet the Canaanites were still in the land, and troubles were not at an end. Spurgeon saw Canaan instead as a representation of spiritual dependence upon God: looking to Him for everything that we need.

I haven't listened yet to this sermon but right from the start, having been to where the site is that this happened, it struck me how they entered a land that was pretty barren and that can be quite hot. I don't know how hot it was when they passed through the Jordan, but the Jordan is cold and was colder and deeper back then and the area is hot and if you looked across the Jordan and someone said that's the promised land you would be laughed at: it's a rocky, hot desert! But pressing on a few miles you come upon a green patch out of which has sprung Jericho, high and walled and not an easy target. That must have been amazing and also scary back then, I drove the route, they walked it. But I did get into the Jordan and was baptized there afresh, and walked about the area, which was 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
