  • As the jury return their verdict at the inquest into the lethal crush at Hillsborough in 1989, David Conn analyses the evidence with the help of recently released footage from the day, to build a picture of how 96 Liverpool supporters died at the Sheffield stadium, and how it has taken so long for the truth of their story to emerge

I've just watched this video and I must say as a liverpool fan who lost an uncle at Hillsborough reading some of the trolls comments is sickening. How dare you claim that boys at the age of 10 were drunk and at fault for dying. I hope somewhere in the near future you become educated, not just on the Hillsborough disaster itself but in life because one day you may feel the pain we felt when our loved ones never came home, whilst I do not wish the feeling on anybody to go on social media and hide behind your phone/laptop/PC or however you access the internet I hope your family sees your comments and disowns you very nasty unintelligent people.

This case pretty sums up why I am terrified to be stuck in crowded places, I attended one show back in 2011 with at least 30.000 people and I never forgot the crushing sensation as we were heading in line towards the arena's entrance, and inside there , the shock wave of people trembling to find space to stay on its feet and not fall down while thousands more are coming by our backs.

Simple but thorough explanation for those who may not know the story. I wish people understood the extent to which this is not a story about Liverpool fans: It is a story about being able to trust Public Safety officers to keep us safe and to admit when they fail in that duty of care. Otherwise, none of us can ever feel safe in a place of public assembly.

It's incredible to me that the city would accept that this stadium was simply a known death trap needing to be casually managed by random uninitiated police officers. Why not blow out that tunnel in the early 1980s after the first crush occurred?

the sad result of a perfect storm - an antiquated stadium with sub-standard entry gates that had been divided up into poorly designed "caged" pens due to past issues with football hooliganism - a police officer highly inexperienced on crowd control in charge on the day - a failure to assess and monitor the numbers of supporters entering the ground - all leading to a terrible tragedy.

As an American who doesn't watch football, this tragedy is absolutely heartbreaking. I hadn't heard of it before, but it's unbelievable that the city allowed this stadium to keep the original design that resulted in 1 (2?) previous crush incidents, and I'm also shocked by whoever made the decision to let 2 inexperienced officers be in charge of this game. The police blaming fans of one team for their own deaths, to cover up for police incompetence and negligence, is horrible and inexcusable.

Major disasters, when not terrorist, are often due to a recent, relatively untested, change and/or a catastrophic effect due to a gradual failure of a physical support or system as a result of many years of laziness, complacency, greed, or miscalculation or lack of knowledge and/or a complication that places extra stress on the first two matters. For instance, the Kings Cross Fire was really caused by complacency, laziness and/or greed in two respects - that flammable wooden escalators were deemed an acceptable feature, and that not cleaning underneath escalators for many years on end was deemed an acceptable feature. Also that the as yet then undiscovered 'trench effect' had not been discovered. With Hillsborough, the untested change is that someone who hadn't controlled a football match before was in charge and what had worked as well as could in the circumstances before didn't happen - guiding fans to emptier pens. The gradual failure is system related in this case - the potential danger of enclosing fans in high fenced pens, where fans can only escape through a few doors - and this danger had already been seen before at Hillsborough in 1981. Oh - and the ground didn't have a safety certificate. And the complication was that Hillsborough's Leppings Lane end was slow and bottleneck-like when there was a high turnout to process. And these are the matters before the ambulance services response, as much as they were allowed to respond, is taken in to account too.

On the day I had been shopping in town & on the bus home heard there had been trouble on Leppings Lane, I couldn't believe what I saw on the television in the pub, it looked like something after a wartime battle. South Yorkshire Police should have been disbanded, they lied about Orgreave & again at Hillsborough. I'm glad Liverpool got the justice they deserved, someone should have gone to prison, especially David Duckenfield & Margaret Thatcher should have been fired for spreading the lies.

I will also never understand people pusing in more to get in front. lets not forget that someone, somehow is pushing more and there are people unable to do anything. In short his mistake was that he opened the outer door so more people would go in so they won't get crushed outside, but he also forgot to close the middle indoor and make people go to the side areas, so they all went to the middle one.
There was a moment that people were being crushed while people in the back were still pushing to go inwards. You never push, you wait.

The people in back don't need to push very hard to cause a crush. I don't exactly understand the mechanics of it, but people in back pushing only a little adds up to massive pressure on the people in front. We all need to be aware of this when we are on the fringes of a crowd!

+Patricia Harte It also has similarities with the sinking of the Lusitania 100 years ago.... Admiralty trying to put blame on the captain, writing the crews statements, only asking those to testify who will say what they want them to say etc. etc.. And desperately anxious families waiting in vain at Liverpool train station for their loved ones to return. I believe that documents re final communications between the captain and the admiralty are still classified 100 years later. I have come to realise that 'CLASS-ified' actually means hiding the crimes of those in power and authority so they can avoid justice.

I am not here to blame police or the crowd. I blame who built the stadium with pens like that. The pens didn't just have fencing at the front to stop crowds running onto the pitch but the real blame lies with the person who allowed fences to be built in 3 parts along the goal crowd. Even with a rush of people crowds would have spread of been pushed further around the stadium. That one pen in the center caused the crush because people had nowhere to go.

Horrific! a few years later, your little bro/sister gets punched and killed by someone half related to the person who your brother kills. Ridiculous, no? I don't understand why people would bunch themselves up like that. I been to many sporting events and people naturally spread themselves out. Blaming the cops was wrong. It was the designed of the stadium. Now I don't know who owns the stadiums in England but this stadium was not built with public safety in mind. It should have been condemn even back then. How come that was never addressed? Just the idea of having the pens is absurd. Hopefully todays stadiums built in England have public safety in mind.

Pens were introduced due to football hooliganism, which was at its peak in the 80s
It was the perfect storm of an antiquated stadium with lack of turnstiles, Liverpool fans been given the wrong end, inexperienced senior policemen & metal fences to prevent football violence
FYI - the stand still stands today, albeit with seats on the lower tier, not terracing. The fences have gone though

    • @gmcxm211
      @gmcxm211 Місяць тому

@@thomasglover7937 Oh yea I understand you have to control the football Hooligans, but the police can't be blamed. They didn't build the stadium, they didn't own the stadium, and they were't responsible for any safety inspections. They were not the ones who made the decision to install the pens.
Now I know this was back in the 80's, no doubt there were safety standards back then for public safety.

Note the word lane, due to the river, the street into that stand is very narrow, so imagine 10,000 people funneling into a narrow lane. The police failed use known techniques of staggering the flow with police horses. Also you have the nervousness of missing the kick off. That's why one police officer said his biggest regret was not delaying the kick off. If they kick off had been delayed the crush probably wouldn't have happened, if the tunnel had been closed, wouldn't have happened. The problem in the tunnel was probably the people at the back had no idea what was happening at the front.

The truth about Heysel came out immediately and the guilty fans were rightly denounced and punished. There is a permanent memorial to Heyel at Anfield and a service is held there every year on the anniversary of the disaster.
After Hillsborough, the families had to live with the lies and injustice of having their deceased relatives blamed for their own deaths, for 24 years. Only after the largest legal challenge in UK judicial history, did the truth finally come out.

You can find it as unconvincing as you like but neither of us saw all the evidence the jury did and at the end of the day, the jury ruled that the 96 were unlawfully killed. From what was explained in the video, I think the evidence is pretty damning against South Yorkshire Police imo.

+Daniel Bradshaw The police tried really hard to find evidence of this mass of drunken fans but there was none (although they went ahead and said it anyway).
I'm not saying that some Liverpool fans weren't drunk, but not enough to have affected the outcome. I'm not saying that some fans tried to get in without tickets but again, not enough to affect the outcome.
It was lack of knowledge about crowd dynamics and some poor decision making that is to blame for the Hillsborough disaster.
If the crowd had been teetotal and fully paid up ticketwise, once the central pens were full but the tunnel was not closed off, the crush was inevitable. There were two near misses before this. This was not an unknowable fact.
That's why the officer in charge got the blame.
The evidence tampering and perjury that went on afterwards is of course an equally serious issue.
