    The point I live most about these vids is when all the chores are done, the tent is up... and it’s time to spark up the stove...

  • @redsorgum

    I love the simplicity of the stove fan. There’s nothing wrong with using a chain saw. I’ve also kept some of the habits I picked up from my army days. Crawling under barbed wire through mud in January while caring an M-16, that habit I no longer keep....😉🤪😬😬😬 That food looked great

    What a lovely little weekend. I was really entertained at Esme trying to bury her food in the sleeping bag. That was the highlight of the video for me lol I didn’t realize you got rid of the Argo but I don’t blame you. I just love that Can-Am. It just looks extremely practical for what you do. I have two winter camps coming up with my overland group at the end of February. You are a huge inspiration for me MICHAEL to do this. I’m going out of my box and pushing my limits just as you do. Get busy living they say. I’m doing just that. Cheers my friend.

      @@TheEmporiumOutdoors it’s not “my” overland group. Its Michigan overland that I belong to but I’m in the process of starting a UA-cam channel and branding myself. I have a couple names I’m throwing around and working on a logo. I’m going to have a Facebook page of the same name. But very early stages still. Lots of work and little ambition lol. And of course I will post pictures on Instagram of my winter adventures. I get excited when you like my stuff. Lol I’m like awww how awesome he likes it lol. I’m a dork sometimes. The UA-cam algorithm paid off again. I'm really enjoying your videos Michael. The Esme, Argo, snow, wood fire formula never gets old. The new UTV is obviously much faster so I get the appeal, but I see thousands of them around here, so there's no mystique like the Argo brings (just speaking for ME). One of my favs or your episodes so far. The sharing of your -40C episode and your thoughts around knowing your limits was really insightful. I share you desire to keep pushing oneself and know what you can and can't do. As I've gotten older what I've learned to be more careful about is understanding that the line between can and can't changes in sneaky ways, especially when doing solo outings. I've never dealt with any cold like what you regularly seem to thrive in, but deal in the opposite with heat/humidity in TX - have to be cautious as a bad situation tends to snowball (no pun intended) quickly to the point where like you said, you're in survival mode. I also liked the food section - I've never heard of bannock but will have to give that a try as it looked delicious. I googled it and see it is originally from Scotland. Curious if you have family ties to Scotland? Enjoy, keep pushing, but stay safe!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Rod - Thanks for the great comment and shared outlook! I, like you, but opposite, look at the heat and wonder how people cope with it and the humidity!!! 🥵 Give me the cold any day 😄 The bannock bread does originate from Scotland but it is a staple in Canada. Some of the first widespread settlers in Canada originated from Scotland and brought many of their traditions and food with them. "Nova Scotia" literally means "New Scotland". 🇨🇦 Bannock is an excellent camping food as you can carry it dry, never spoils and you can vary the flavour with other ingredients for longer trips. Best wishes Michael!

    So at minus 40, you did not exceed your limit but you found it, you had however exceeded your comfort level. Personally I have never been that cold, I prefer the heat hence now living in Queensland, but I do remember an old (to a late teen) Colours saying "if your cold put a hat on!". At those temp's you are way beyond a hat! Thank's for the video mate, having just been outside working in 34C and 80% humidity all day, it was a VERY enjoyable escape! PS. That was a scary close call. Really glad you made it. When you described what -40c was like, it brought back memories when I used to deliver bulk propane. For security reasons sometimes we could not bring the truck inside a heated garage. So the repairs were done outside. In addition to the cold, liquid propane is at -42c, so just a few drops on already frozen hands and it resulted in severe burn instantly. Anyway, that tent/stove set up sure seemed comfy and Esme trying to hide her food was so cute to watch. So the stove does melt the snow somewhat but it quickly soaks into the ground or evaporates. The heat is very dry from a wood stove and with the breathability of the canvas on the snowtrekker there is no condensations 👍

    Hi Michael. I enjoy your videos and appreciate your thoughtful explanations and opinions. I have the same insulated Klymit mattress. Do you use your breath or a compression bag to fill it? Mine tends to lose significant pressure in very cold conditions. Thank you.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Cory - Thanks for the kind comment! I love that mattress too! This is my second one, as the first one started loosing pressure. The NEW version has 1 valve not 2. I found the early version wasn't great for holding the pressure and Klymit replaced it under warranty. I use a dewalt tire inflator (DCC020IB) that I carry for my UTV that also has low pressure air too! 😉 I normally blow it up with the DeWalt then let it sit for a while to acclimatize, then put a few mouthfuls of air in. With the new mat I've had no issues at all, even when sleeping on the ground at -25c! 👍

    Great video. You selected a beautiful spot for you & Esme. One question: is there a reason you do not use a ground cloth? Thanks!

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  3 роки тому

      Thanks! 👍 In cold conditions tent floors don't work in hot tents. When the tent is warm the ice on the ground melts under the floor and then re-freezes binding the floor to the ice. Removing it afterwards in difficult and can destroy the material. I use a smaller mat by my bed to be able to step onto it but it never gets warm enough for the ice to melt it to the floor and its easy to remove. Plus you are going in and out with snowy boots that would accumulate lots of water on the top of the floor. Spruce bows are great for flooring but I prefer not to cut them and I leave the trees alone. Its not worth it for short trips and is best done in very remote areas in my opinion 👍 - Hope that helps!

    Nothing to do with this video, but I have a question about the Teton sleeping bags. Back on Christmas 2018, you posted a video where the zipper of your Teton Celsius XL broke (I believe it was the first use of the bag). Was that a one off? I’ve seen you using Teton bags in other videos. Have you had any other zipper issues with their bags? I’m asking because I’m thinking of getting one and I’ve seen other people write in reviews that the zippers can be problematic. If you don’t recommend them, is there a better brand that you’d recommend for the Teton Vista 1 Tent / Cot Combo? Thanks!! And I love the videos; they’re so relaxing to watch.

    • @TheEmporiumOutdoors
      @TheEmporiumOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Jason, I replaced the bag by returning it to amazon and I have not had the same issue again. I think the zips used on the bags could be better (metal rather than plastic coil) but they are very affordable and the XXL is a nice big bag. If you are in Canada these bags often go on sale for 50% off and are bulkier but a better option. bit.ly/2MYaR08 You can change out the 3 layers in the woods bag to match your temperature requirements. I own two of them and love them. The TETON bags are easier to pack and do the job just fine so I mix and match depending on how I feel that day 😉 Hope that helps!
