This version brings tears to my eyes, it's so lush and heartfelt.
I love Nimrod, but I think that even more than most pieces, it relies on subtle and exquisite phrasing to be wonderful. There's no bombast, no brassnastics, just long beautiful lines that ebb and flow like an ocean's waves. Long phrases like that are (IMO) much more difficult to perform well than quick, or punchy lines. Beautifully done, as always.
Simply awesome! Gave me goosebumps.
Vince Cichowicz’s arrangement of Nimrod was performed by The Miller Brass for his funeral in 2006. I was fortunate enough to have heard him discuss his ‘take’ on it as we sat in his living room here in WI. I recall (I think?) some discussion of something Bach once may have said about the poignant quality of descending 6th and 7ths. I will never again in my life hear this played (as beautifully as it is here) w/o those memories.
very beautiful -
- by the way, I guess, there's a hidden (not written down) melody 'behind' this piece, namely similar to the german (lutheran/protestant) chorale "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" (which could have sources in an older (roman catholic) chorale melody - which may be important for Elgar ...)
See, it is possible to get wind players to play in tune.
Wonderful arrangement! I recall "Nimrod" from my high school band days, but don't think we played it with quite as much warmth and feeling. ☻ Intonation for us was sometimes a challenge as well!
Gorgeous inspiring playing. Thank you.
Really beautiful arrangement, and everyone is so together and flawless it makes for an incredible listen, right from its very start. I shared with friends.
