Few days ago i was washing a wig for my mom. I applied the Tresemme conditioner and left it on the wig for about 10 minutes or so. I then rinsed the wig off and realised how unfair us black women with kinky textures need to wait forever but then i realised that maybe my hair didn't need be soaked in conditioner for 20-40 minutes. So on wash day i decided to use the same conditioner i used on the wig and kept it on for about 10-15 minutes and my hair felt very soft. My hair has been 100% better since I capped my deep conditioner to 15mins, technology has changed so much and we don't need to cook anymore. I also alternate deep conditioner with a rinse out! Great advice here!
I messed my hair up about 12-13 years ago leaving conditioner in overnight and 1/2 of the next day. Overnight was intentional (I didn’t know any better at that time and hadn’t had a problem yet). I generally only left it in 1-2 hours, max overnight every once in a while if I was tired, but not every washday. Well this time I was tired and left it in that night. I got caught up XMAS shopping and thought I would pop out and back home quick the next morning. Yeah no. I got into the shower at the end of the next day to wash it out and my hair started matting up like a spider web, falling out and was stringy. I had some shampoo and conditioner that had perfect PH and used that which immediately helped with the shedding and texture but it took some time to restore my hair, many many months. 🤦🏽♀️ I experienced some thinning but was honestly lucky that it bounced back at all.
You are correct, 💯. I am guilty. I start doing something around the house and leave it in longer than said directions. Although I'm a 9 yr natural you can definitely feel the difference to your hair. I'm here for your wisdom, every time. Thank you, Narada! ❤️❤️❤️
Wow!! I have been relaxing me hair for years. I started at 12 with absolutely no choice. After more that 40 years I am finally learning more about my hair and hair type. And with all the hair dressers and professional hair stylists I've had in my life, I learned more in this 13 than I have ever. Thank, thank, thank you!
I will admit I was one of those that had my hair wet in a ponytail and I did leave the conditioner on my hair for a long time. In 2019 I had this issue my curl pattern and it loosen up a lot and clumps of hair would come out. Over conditioning over steaming and I was dying my hair constantly. It took an awhile for my hair to recover and I had to be patient and I just kept it simple and left it alone. Now my hair is better I leave the conditioner in my hair for 5 min wash it completely out and prep it for blow drying . I haven’t touched dye since December 2021 . I am keeping it simple . I am glad you made a video talking about this .
This was so informative! And I’m glad I don’t over condition and I never will now ❤ Knowing what works for my hair and how to retain moisture has definitely helped me to retain my length 🎉
my hair got so much thicker and healthier when i did less to it. i think the deeep condition thing is to overall try to change the hair from what it actually is. type 4 hair will feel thick and coarse and never as silky soft as a type 2 hair wig
All people that have Type 4 hair don't have coarse hair. Coarse hair is tied to the diameter of the individual strands. Coarse hair can be straight, wavy, curly, or kinky/coily. I see plenty of type 4 hair that is fine or average/normal as it relates to individual strand diameter.
@@jdbailey442 i said the hair will 'feel' coarse not 'be' coarse. A coarse feeling means not smooth. I have many people in my family with very fine hair but the hair still feels coarse in texture (meaning not smooth) even relative to a very coarse (width of strands) strand straight hair.
Please understand our hair journey in this country has been harreling... give us a break! We're learning that it's okay to jump into a pool or the ocean, but we know WORK MAY COME AFTERWARDS. WE'RE LEARNING HOW TO SHAKE AND GO STILL😅😂 I recently interviewed for a promotion with an Asian male Director and his White female Assistant Director...i didn't straighten my hair for them and I know my Afro was scrutinized. It takes time for us to recover from our CROWN TRAUMAS! But...thank you so much for that information..SUPER HELPFUL
I too was doing to much, but I recognize I had possible product buildup on my natural thin hair. I'm looking forward to hair regrowth. I went ftom hair pass my shoulders to a small natural curly afro.
Recommended time on label plus heat has always worked for me………….actually as soon as i stopped the overnight and extra long time hair being wet (anything air drying or long term conditioning) my hair started looking a million times better and was way less reactive to humidity.
When i had loose natural hair i use to do overnight conditioning but onky sometimes i been stopped smh, I look back like why i did all that lol but you learn from your mistakes lol, now i have locs i only condition for 5 min, thank you for this!
I’m doing 40 minutes of deep conditioning under a heated cap once a month. I have that mushy texture with tiny bits breaking off on wash day 😩 I moisturise with water based products though!
Had a coworker who would deep condition during her shift smh. Do you think using those heated deep conditioning caps can lead to similar damage over time? I also noticed that these companies are getting rid of their co wash or overnight conditioning products. It was never something we needed and people always used naivety to capitalize. Also thanks for sharing this story because i am soooo tired of hearing “well my hair long so it works”. You can have damaged long hair smh
I think one of the ways to fix it would be to hold off on deep conditioning for awhile and to use a product that adds strength to the hair from the inside. I remember in one of your videos you mentioned products like olaplex, k8, protein and bonding products works on the hair different from each other. Some works on the inside of the hair and others coat the hair. Since she's breaking down the protein in her hair maybe the answer is to slowly reintroduce protein to her hair?
Hi ! So I watched your video and you mentioned you didn’t have any concerns about this but you said that your client wears twist/plaits monthly and takes them out every 4 weeks-6 weeks the most at a time. I do want to point out that her breakage could be from “over processing” with conditioner but it also could be the fact that hair sheds everyday. All hair types shed atleast 100-200 strands everyday. So if she’s keeping her hair braided up for 4 -6 weeks at a time and not combing her hair in between those weeks/days her shedded hair could just be building up over time. By time her wash day comes or she takes out her protective style she’s shedding lots of hairs, all the hairs that were being shed during that month/4-6 weeks. I over condition my hair, put it in buns to protect it and haven’t seen any breakage nor do I worry about length retention. My hair does shed naturally and I comb it damn near everyday. My hair is the healthiest and longest it’s been since middle school and the deep conditioning over night and keeping my hair conditioned with oils and water daily keeps my hair healthy. Also, I’m sure the less you manipulate the hair while it’s wet that can prevent damage or breakage as well.
I only deep condition long enough for my hair steamer to complete its cycle. I used to prepoo with my homemade prepoo overnight and it worked well for a while. But I began to see exactly what he’s talking about with the small wispy pieces of hair coming out when combing it and having breakage that I don’t know where it comes from. Once I started just adding heat to the prepoo for an hour and proceeding to my wash day, I have totally changed the condition of my hair and allowed me to reach my length goals.
So i think this is a problem I've been having... not from extensive deep conditioning, but wash n go's where my hair is wet from water and products for extended time.
Maybe you've already done a video on this, so disregard if so. But similar to your last video on where you addressed how people do not know the different between healthy and unhealthy natural hair, I'd love to know the different between normal shedding and breakage. 😬 I have been told by so many that it's normal to see hair coming off on your hand while styling because we shed our hair. You just don't want to see large clumps. What's true?
I think with breakage you don't see the bulb at an end of the strand. Shedding has the bulb. The difference between abnormal shedding and regular shedding is probably an individual thing.
Shedding is full length strands and breakage is short pieces, like you’ll know if it’s breakage cuz it’s literally the ends of your hair that’s why the hair isn’t retaining length. Shedding is normal, breakage is not
@thelashayway8250 with some illnesses, isn't there excessive shedding? The hair is lost from the root. While a long strand is usually shed, that can be breakage too--if it's combed or brushed improperly, for example. From what I've heard, the bulb is the indicator that the strand was released at the root, and that's shedding.
@@majikai9077 yesss you’re correct , some health issues can cause excessive shedding , iron levels, vitamin d deficiency etc. and yes the bulb does tell if it’s breakage or shedding
I did it one time years ago and never again. My hair turned to mush and did not recover and would not hold a style. I had to cut it off. Now I'm 20 minutes max with a heat cap.
Too much moisture or too much protein causes imbalance in the hair. Imbalance causes damage. It's a hard habit to kick because its supposed to be good for us. But too much of a good thing is bad. I needed to remember this. Thank you
I learned this years ago. I developed severe dandruff and itching from doing this. I realized I was having an allergic reaction and causing unnecessary buildup. Now I leave it on for 5-10 minutes while I bathe and my hair and scalp are so much better.
Hair is supposed to be dry by default, not damp, not moist. Some ppl are obsessed with softening their hair, changing their curl pattern and defining curls … keeping their hair wet almost everyday - thus weakening hair. I apply and leave deep conditioner in my dry hair once in a while for deep hydration and it’s fine because my hair is never slimy and wetty.
That's not necessarily true. Conditioner is made to be applied to damp to wet hair. It's about balance and understanding proper haircare. Water is NOT the enemy. It is a tool just like any product and any tool can be misused
@CharlotteMasonTT that's why I tell people to stop reading into hygral fatigue it's not an accepted scientific concept. Someone used it in a study and ppl just ran with it
Ooops thanks so much, if I were you client I would think you were talking about me 😅. This just happened to come up while I am meal prepping and I really needed to hear this. Thanks again ❤
I’ve watched your videos in the past, finally subscribed since I’m seriously trying to grow my hair. I have 4C with 4B in some places. I definitely have been paying attention to my hair since I stopped wearing wigs. I’m not afraid to have my hair get wet, and I’ve been trying to use water more when styling. Wash N Gos are a definite NO for my hair, and I don’t over condition because I noticed breakage a year ago (along with the dry ness from the wNg’s) I’m greasing my scalp again and trimming regularly. My hair hasn’t been this long and THICK since I was a kid!
With deep conditioning I've learned less is more. I typically only do 15-20 minutes and my max is 30 only if and when I need it. I don't deep condition every week just for the sake of deep conditioning either. My hair has never been happier 😊
Hi. I think I was confused by my former hairstylists leaving me at the shampoo bowl with conditioner on my hair for 30-40 minutes. I started correcting a few months ago, and now I am getting better results when I shampoo and set my curls.
Thank you for this video. It was so informative. I stopped the overnight conditioning years ago. I agree with you about some naturals not wanting to wet their hair or shampoo and clarify often. I've seen videos online, where some women said they go a month or more without washing their hair??? Omg, my scalp gets itchy after a week. Again, thanks for the info. ❤
I learned with my own hair that deep conditioning over night dries the hair out. So I quit doing that. 15 to 30 minutes is enough. I wash my hair once a week, avoid products with coconut oil, take hair vitamins, get regular trims and have noticed an increase in growth. I also just transitioned back to natural and I love it.
Wow that's exactly what I do and now I see whats causing my hair to feel mushy in the top and middle of my head and I now have thin hair strands in those areas and stronger strands on the sides and lower back which happens to be the areas that tends to dry out as I'm conditioning either longer than I should or over night. Those thinner strands pops off when combing so easy.
I deep condition but I never go past the required time it says on the bottle there is a reason why their is a time limit our hair can only absorb so much. Ever since moknowshair educated me on one of her videos about this I always read the instruction and never go past the time limit and my hair absorbs products faster so I go less than the time. The deep conditioning overnight and for hours is crazy
I went from one extreme of over deep conditioning to not conditioning enough with the no oils/butters (I never gave up leave in 😅). I’m learning I need to do things in moderation because I used to OD on oil and then over compensated with that no oils / butters thing.
My conditioning process is less than 5mins with a normal conditioner mixed with a hair mask and my hair is loving life. The less I do the better it grows.
I damaged my hair by sleeping in conditioner overnight or for several hours, weekly. My hair would not retain length and constantly popped when I combed it. I happened to mention to my stylist how I conditioned my hair and she said that was the issue. I tried to let it grow out but the popping went on for YEARS until I couldn’t take it anymore and cut it all off and started from scratch.
Thank you for this information. I've also found that hard water makes my hair so much dryer. I wasn't aware that this is a real issue. I'm looking into buying a water filter for my faucet
When I first started as a natural, my hair was really damaged from heat styling and my big brain thought that it was a good idea to DC for hours and hours. Yeah no, don’t do that shit. My hair still felt dry and gummy. Also, DC stops working after 30-45 mins so the rest is open for hydration fatigue.
Guilty as charged. I was doing an overnight pre-poo plus gobs of conditioner when I washed it. At first I thought it was great but then I noticed my curl pattern was disappearing. When my hair would dry it would just be a soft frizzy mess no matter how much styling product I used. But I noticed when I used a protein treatment the curls would come back. I also used my clarifying shampoo when I used the protein treatment and it would the best was day ever. It finally clicked that maybe I was doing too much with the moisturizing “treatments”. I didn’t notice breakage but it could have been that the pieces were so small that I didn’t notice them.
Yep, guilty of this as well. I’ve stopped and have realized you can get nice little steam treatment from the humidity in the air (if you live in the south) 😂
Great knowledge! I wish you were around when I lived in Atlanta 💙 You had me rolling on “just follow the directions” 😂😂 My hair is most beautiful when I just wet it and it gets curly, sometimes I just mist with water/ayurveda tea every morning and I love the turnout!!
i remember i took down some faux locs late at night a few years ago. I think i sprayed it with water along with a rinse out conditioner. I was too tired to wash it out so i slept in it. headscarf and all...no type of air getting in. washed it the next day...my hair was soo soft.. I thought that was fine but i got scared because its never felt like that... safe to say i never did that again..
Thank you for this you've answered 2 questions I've been asking myself for a while because I have no professional close to me to give me answers due to my geographical location
Question: What about henna treatments? I use it to cover grays, and it needs to sit on hair for several hours. I do this every 6- 8 weeks with washes every other week. Also, I mist each morning with As I Am JBCO spray.
A similar process is how I ended up with severe breakage on my left side. I would always rinse (not shampoo 🫥) my hair, put conditioner in, put it in a bun before going out, and then braid it at night. Then I would do the same thing the next day or every other day. I ended up having to cut half my length off.
@ No I just didn't know any better as a new natural. Did this routine for about 8 years, and it worked until it didn't. Did a fairly substantial chop in 2022 to start over and also get rid of extreme sun-in damage, and now my hair is mostly back on track. 😊
To Lady, Hi Jay here, where can I purchase the chebe paste. I'm using the chebe n kar kar oil as a hot treatment n my hair likes it. Thanks for sharing 😊
You're starting to sound like Cyndoll. She says the same thing about sleeping with conditioner and keeping hair wet too long. I like that you're honest
No... We both happen to be right about the same thing. A broken clock is right twice a day. We both understand that naturals do too much sometimes and it causes damage. You should also compare our reasoning for why we say the things that we say because her logic and understanding is very flawed and simple but I admit that she likes any other cosmetologist can be right about some things. Please don't tell me I sound like Cyn Doll.... That's so insulting to me

I never deep condition for more than 45 minutes because it makes my hair “mushy”. I found out years ago this can be an issue from reading natural hair forums. I guess people don’t go to the boards anymore.
I don’t know how to take care of my hair. Shea Moisture had a high porosity line years ago, that my hair did well with. Then I used an oil from Carol’s daughter and my hair was great. Shea discontinued their line and Carols Daughter changed the formula of the oil. My hair has been a dry unmanageable mess ever since. I just keep cutting it off.

I am guilty of this and the good Lord spoke to me about it and this video is a confirmation
You care about your clients!subscribed! Here for the results from your client. Thx!
I haven’t seen your videos in forever! I am so glad you came across my feed.
You said it follow the instructions on the product. They're there for a reason👏🏾
Welll dang its me, i was doing the overnight conditioning lol 🤣 well i guess i will stop that asap
I only deep condition when I've went swimming or have used heat. Regular conditioner works just fine most of the time
What are examples of regular conditioners? It seems that I only see deep conditioners when I search on Google
I have that mushy texture with tiny bits breaking off on wash day 😩
I moisturise with water based products though!
I don't know if this can be repaired depending on the severity of it. I haven't seen her again yet to confirm
All hair types/textures react to products and hair routines differently. So do what’s best for your hair and scalp! 💋
Thank you for that heads up. ❤ I've been guilty of this in the past. 💁♀
But similar to your last video on where you addressed how people do not know the different between healthy and unhealthy natural hair,
I'd love to know the different between normal shedding and breakage.
Thank you for this video. 🙏🏾

Not me seeing this with conditioner on my hair that's been sitting for 3 hours. I'm just lazy 😩. I'ma watch this and go wash it out 🤭.
@@dymondkittync 😅😅😅it’s ok…I’m so guilty of this
I'm going to try not to deep condition every week to see if my dense fine hair feels different.
Ok I will stop the overnight conditioner!!!!!!! Thanks❤
Teach us Sir! This was very informative. Thanks for the breakdown on conditioning.
Oh my goodness!!! Thank you so much for this explanation!!!
The longest i leave deep conditioner in for is about 15 to 20 mins
I use a heated dryer for 30 mins and go on about my next 2 weeks.
Love the bearded locs❤ and I was definitely a serial deep conditioner, my hair was so mushy
I've been leaving deep conditioner in my hair overnight for years and my hair has alwats been long healthy whether permed or natural...works for me
I needed to hear this bc I will condition sometimes like crazy
I went from one extreme of over deep conditioning to not conditioning enough with the no oils/butters (I never gave up leave in 😅).
I’m learning I need to do things in moderation because I used to OD on oil and then over compensated with that no oils / butters thing.
Thank you for this information. God bless you 😊☺️❤
My conditioning process is less than 5mins with a normal conditioner mixed with a hair mask and my hair is loving life.
Great video and glad you shared this information.
I’ve been doing exactly that. My reasoning is that at least it wasn’t dry. Well I’ve been debunked! Thanks for setting me straight.
Decatur where it's greater! Candler- McAfee
You just explained where I went wrong many years ago. Way too late now and the damage has been done
This is super helpful. Thanks!
Question: What about henna treatments? I use it to cover grays, and it needs to sit on hair for several hours. I do this every 6- 8 weeks with washes every other week. Also, I mist each morning with As I Am JBCO spray.
Thank you for clearing how to deep conditioning my hair.
this is good to know! i deep conditioned one, forgot i was, took a nap and woke up to my hair feeling mushy.
A similar process is how I ended up with severe breakage on my left side. I would always rinse (not shampoo 🫥) my hair, put conditioner in, put it in a bun before going out, and then braid it at night. Then I would do the same thing the next day or every other day. I ended up having to cut half my length off.
And can i ask why did you do this routine? Did you want to keep your hair moisturized?
@ No I just didn't know any better as a new natural. Did this routine for about 8 years, and it worked until it didn't. Did a fairly substantial chop in 2022 to start over and also get rid of extreme sun-in damage, and now my hair is mostly back on track. 😊
I use Chebe Leave in Paste and it is really growing my Natural Hair!

I see people on this here yt do the weirds thing. Olaplex say 3 says 10 minutes. They want to sleep in. They can’t read basic instructions.
What is the problem with the hair when it breaks off or sheds in lots of short little pieces?? This is what my daughter’s hair does.

Narada, can you do a video on Ase and SiSlays protein treatment routine please?
Everyone should do what works best for them and their own hair.
I never deep condition for more than 45 minutes because it makes my hair “mushy”. I found out years ago this can be an issue from reading natural hair forums. I guess people don’t go to the boards anymore.
At this point i dont even condition my hair in the normal washing process. I just put in a leave in.
The “to death”part 😂
I only use hydration shampoo and lightly dry my hair and use olive oil that’s it. Some women do too too much . I don’t see how their scalp holds it
Very informative 💪🏾
