The biggest mith when discussing England is Harry Maguire. I laugh when these boxed-in pundits say he has never let England down. In big tournaments such as the last WC, who was the defender on Oliver Giroud when he scored the header and France beat England 2-1 in the QF. Get some sense of correct analysis.

England's biggest problem is sticking with southgate with the types of players England has available.

Walker is better at RB. Simple as that
Trent offers something different in that he's one of the best at progressing the ball with his passing from deep, finding players between the lines or with his delivery if he plays higher. There are several no.10s and someone needs to get the ball to them. Rice played better when Jorginho started playing, Arsenal didn't win for 4 games when it was Rice as a no.6 and two free 8s in Odegaard and Havertz
Trent is poor recieving the ball with his back to goal. So is Rice. A huge reason why Arsenal were better with Jorginho/Partey in the team is because they are both very good at recieving with thier back to goal and turning. When they aren't in the side, Odegaard tends to have to drop back to facilitate getting the ball out of defence.
So you can't really play Rice and Trent in midfield against the better teams who will press them, as we will just get pinned in defense.
That’s more down to Havertz being a bad player though. Rice and Odegard have been playing as 8s recently but Alexander Arnold can’t play as a 6 alone. He can’t defend

@@stretfordender11 Trent only lacks the pace to be isolated, it’s just like putting Jorginho at right back and asking him to defend in open spaces without much help from Salah. Trent isn’t that bad at defending in midfield, Liverpool actually had the best defensive record in the league by the end of January before he got injured, he was mostly in front of a back 3 when we were dealing with counter attack after counter attack. Of course the defensive record is not all down to him, but he wasn’t a liability either
@@GamerFlair Do you watch Trent play often? He has no problem recieving the ball, and he’s normally alongside Mac Alister in the 3-2-5 shape. Klopp wouldn’t put him there if he couldn’t do it. He got injured in early February while Liverpool were top of the league and conceded the least goals at that point

TAA has very similar stats that the gretest RB EvER! - R Carlos. Imagine brazil unable to put on Carlos. TAA, Bellingham, Foden- only real galacticos in this team. All 3 can start at galatico hq, madrid.
Trent not only walks into any starting XI in Europe but he has consistently been one of the best players in every game he's played for England.
There is room for Trent. People just don't want us to make room because they're tribalistic clowns that can't get over domestic rivalries. They'd rather sacrifice a top talent and have a lesser player starting the knockout games just out of spite. We really do have the most pathetic fans in international football.

I'm a Chelsea fan and to be honest Rory does not speak for all Chelsea fans on certain things and this is one of them. As far as Trent Alexander-Arnold goes, I would still take him as a backup option in midfield, he is not a rightback anymore as he is more attacking than defending and with set pieces such as free kicks and corners, he will be an extra option just in case one of the other right sided midfielders sustains an injury.

When I saw the headline, I thought Rory was on one again but he’s right - Southgate doesn’t know how to play with a player like Trent.
I suspect he won’t play Foden where he’s best suited either.
But the one thing where he says “we have enough creativity” is BS. Watched the game last night and him and Eze were the only ones who provided any sort of creativity last night in the first half. Palmer did NOTHING. Foden over Palmer all day.

The issue England will have is oh because he played well, let me use this formation. This is about winning the trophy. Yes let people play as substitutes, use what works, study the team , you are playing and use what works.
You don't just say because Palmer played like this, Grealish played like that, Saka played like this...... It's all about what gets you the goal. England had one of the best players in the world cup and also Brazil but it did not win it for them.
it's all about what will win it for you.
So if you have to bench a play, bench him, the goal is the important part. Like Foden and Bellingham plays the same position, though Foden can play other positions but if you need to put one and bench the other do it. The other can always come in as a sub.
He needs to sit down and think effectively not just about playing these players not just saying you plat here, you play here.

You can Fit him in a 3-2-4-1 with him as a double pivot with rice. Other option which is possible is put Walker as a CB next to Stones then have TAA as RB.

As far as Rory’s “team” is concerned, Shaw is injured and won’t play. Southgate won’t play one holding midfielder, he’ll play two, so Trent comes into play. Toney offers a physicality that even Kane doesn’t, and grealish also offers something different, an ability to slow the play down and chip a cross in. For example the cross to Trent against Bosnia. Imagine that chipped in onto Toney’s head. No team would like to defend that.
Trent won't play because Southgate, like his football, is spineless. Forget all the faf, I think England will make it to the semis this year and then lose to one of the top tier teams.
Kobe Mainoo at this point has a higher chance at making a first team appearance than Trent.
Strangely I agree with Rory, 3 at the back suits this squad of players,
Attacking fullbacks providing the width so Foden and Bellingham can play more centrally.
3 centre backs takes defensive pressure off the centre midfielders so rice and a another like Gallagher etc can be more attacking also
Stick walker CB next to Stones and TAA as RB. That covers the pace dimemma at the back and also allow stones to step up into midfield when need be

You could also play Saka on the left wingback which he has done before for England and Arsenal, which might solve our left back issue. Not saying it's a good choice, but they are discussing moving players out of position to accommodate TAA.
Gomez as leftback was good when Robertson was injured.TAA is better at rightback then he can come to midfield is best rather than starting in midfield.

I challenge anyone to make an argument to drop Rice, Bellingham or Foden for him. TAA should be in the squad for his diversity and ability on the ball but shouldn't be starting....which Isn't too different from what Rory is saying

Trent was THE generational talent for England. He has one bad season at Liverpool and the media dog piled on him for his defending forgetting the other 6 seasons where could defend while winning every trophy achievable by 23 whilst breaking multiple assist records. Tribalism is a nasty thing in football and tribalism is what has always cost England trophies. England won’t win anything without Trent.

Jack Grealish should play on the left, he doesn’t lose the ball, he wins free kicks, he get us up the pitch with control. His understudy should be Gordon. Saka on the right understudied by Palmer. Trent right understudied by Walker, he can create five chances for every one he might concede. Shaw left back or Gomez if shaw isn’t fit. Rice, Bellingham, Foden in midfield to start, and Kane upfront. Centre backs should be Stones and Branthwaite. And in goal should be Joe Hart. Sorted!!!!
Seen both games before the Euroes and honest opinion is that trent makes stuff happen. He creates for his team and against iceland he was the only player that created threat when he came on. I think Southgate would shoot himself in the foot not playing trent. He's got a chip on his shoulder as well to prove a whole nation that he deserves that spot. And he's in his prime.
It's fairly obvious to me that Konsa will be in defence probably beside Stones in the middle assuming Stones is fit. , Trippoer or Gomez will be left back until Shaw is fit enough for the knockout stages. Southgate wil alsol play Gallagher or Mainoo or TAA in midfield beside Rice and play either Palmer or Foden on the left. Southgate loves having an extra midfielder and moving around his attackers to the wings, and i can't see Foden in the middle until we are losing and need to score.

Ahh yes, I always value the profound opinion and insight of Rory. The experience he must have from the teams he’s managed and players he’s coached like… err… erm… somebody help…. Anyone??
The biggest problem TAA has is that of responsibility.
He is an outstanding football talent, when he has the ball. When he doesn't have the ball he far too often a defensive liability. Southgate knows this which is why Walker and Trippier are ahead of him for the right back spot. As far as midfield goes again he is an outstanding talent, at times De Bruyne esque, when he has the ball. He doesn't play central midfield often enough to warrant a place in what is an absolutely stacked midfield for England at the moment.
So whilst I really cannot stand Rory and the avalanche of pure nonsense that erupts out of his mouth on a near daily basis, I agree with him on this point. I cannot see a place for TAA in this England 11.

Tbh 9/11 of the England team picks itself. Pickford in goal, Walker Right back, Maguire and Stones Cb (some discussion around Maguire but he’s in decent form and like who else? Guehi and Branthwaite are quality but too inexperienced and won’t dislodge Maguire.) Then in midfield we will have 2 more deeper mids, one being Rice. Bellingham will then be in the 10 role with Saka, Foden Kane upfront. The 2 discussions then are left back and the second central mid. If fit, obviously should be Shaw, but could TAA take that role? I’d rather ham him there over Trippier. The mid role is very much up for grabs. TAA, Wharton, Mainoo and Gallagher all have a claim there. Equally could play Bellingham deeper and Palmer or even Eze in the 10. For me I think I’d shove TAA left back, maybe then give Gallagher the other slot.

Trent in every performance in midfield has been good. Just wait and see what happens to England when we shoe horn in too many attackers. We've built relative success with 2 sitting. We would get dominated with both goden and Bellingham vs big teams. Bellingham has to play 10 like he has for Madrid.

Trent is the best player we have for playing those balls through from deep that will win us games in a tournament. Not to take him will be suicidal. He can also shoot, by the way. Palmer is not the answer. Midfield of Trent, Bellingham, Rice. Front line of Foden Saka and Kane. Seems simple to me that this would be a great starting line up.

@sitaylor I will hold my hands up and say the formation hasn't worked for whatever reason. Hopefully, he will go with Gordon left, Kane middle Saka Right. With Foden no. 10 and Bellingham and Rice behind. We shall see. Trent is still ideal as a sub later on.
