    On GMRS, the repeater inputs are the simplex frequencies +5MHz. So, you noticed the frequencies listed for channels 23-30(467.xxx)? Those were the repeater input freqs. The frequencies for channels 15-22(462.xxx) were simplex and repeater outputs.
    ETA: GMRS is not open. It's channelized.

      Correct! And just to add, that it is the PL (CTS or DCS) tones that differentiate GMRS repeaters. Not so different than ARS repeaters but limited to specific channels on GMRS with specified input and output frequency pairs, as you mentioned. So channels 23-30 are all you'll ever need to hit every GMRS repeater available (GMRS channels 15-22 with corresponding +5MHz offset). You'll simply need to change the PL tone on the corresponding 'RPTR 15-22' channel to hit a specific repeater. And it's all done through the radio screen/buttons without a programming cable. This Wouxun is similar to the BTECH-V1 GMRS radio, but perhaps with a better antenna that's tuned for the GMRS band...?

    GMRS, the gateway radio? Recieved two this week. Very powerful GMRS ONLY radio. Meaning, FRS cannot have a removable antenna. This one does. You can program other channels with LISTEN only. Which is cool, fire,police, ham bands, etc. You can put an antenna on a 60 foot mast and probably reach a 5watt radios maximum potential. Which an awesome value. Not to mention the high power FM radio built in. Emergency listening. I will be building a simplex(repeater) soon for increased range. Also has a Lithium Battery, hard to kill. This is NOT a bubble gum radio. Thanks for producing this radio. WRFZ615

    I think the amateur radio community can be a little quick to dismiss GMRS, but I really think it still has it's place in the radio world. Ham is my primary but I do have a valid amateur and GMRS license. I can't get my wife to get her ham license but I can get her to carry a GMRS radio. DCS and CTCS are not really private. In fact if you clear them out you can hear the conversations. They simply modulate a code at the beginning of the transmission. If you have 2 radios on one ctcs and 2 more on another ctcs they will not hear each other but if you clear them on a 5th device you can hear all 4 radios. Its done to have selective sub channels on the same frequency. Hope that helps.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  4 роки тому

      This is true on GMRS where the CTCSS is RX only, but with Ham Radio, you can also TX with CTCSS so clearing out the radio won't allow you to hear the transmissions.

    The 8 basic GMRS channels (15-22) are in the 462 MHz range and are used for simplex and repeater output with up to 50W TPO. The repeater input channels are DUP +5 in the 467 MHz range with up to 50W TPO. Channels 1-7 are located between the 8 462 MHz channels described above and 5W ERP is allowed. Channels 8-14 are located between the 8 repeater input channels and 0.5W ERP is allowed. Also 8-14 can only be transmitted by handheld radios, not mobile or base stations.
    GMRS base stations may be controlled remotely and antenna height restrictions have been removed by the 2017 rule changes. If you want to put your repeater on a 1000 ft TV tower, go ahead! There is no limit to antenna gain on 15-22 and the repeater input channels. In light of the current GMRS rules, I would expect to see shared ham and GMRS repeater sites with all radios operating into a single dual-band antenna.

  • @GStrecker
    @GStrecker 4 роки тому +1

    In GMRS the frequencies are fixed. What you can change are your PL tones. Many repeaters on GMRS require a specific tone to use the repeater, just as Ham repeaters do. The user cannot change the frequencies, they are fixed by the FCC.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  4 роки тому

      Correct but you can change what frequencies are where, if they're simplex or offset, and the PL tones

    • @wingsfromheaven8788
      @wingsfromheaven8788 3 роки тому

      @@HamRadio2 Yes but that becomes confusing, and even illegal, with GMRS. Everything is setup by channel number based on the FCC specs. Channels 23-30 on this radio (and the BTECH-V1) reflect the channel numbers 15-22 with the proper offset (+5MHz). So it's just a matter of changing the PL tone to hit a specific GMRS repeater using those channels (23-30) in all cases. Otherwise, it's not legal to use any other channels/offset/pairs for repeaters with GMRS.

    Great video Jason, thanks for checking out the KG-805G! I wanted to point out that the 8 GMRS exclusive frequencies from your list are allowed as repeater input frequencies only and they match up with channels 15-22, which can be used as repeater TX freqs. The KG-805G uses those frequencies on the repeater "RPT" channels. Also, the radio supports up to 128 channels if you use the programming software, but only comes pre programmed for the 22 standard frequencies + 8 repeaters. Sorry, we're not doing a good job of pointing this out on our web site.

    A minor correction on GMRS bandwidth:
    GMRS wideband is the same 25khz as 70cm amateur radio. In either, 20khz is the authorized or 'occupied' bandwidth and then you add 5khz for allowable deviation. If GMRS only allowed 20khz including the 5khz deviation, none of my old Kenwood LMR gear would be legal on GMRS(but it is I assure you).

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  3 роки тому

      I was reading the chart from wikipedia, which matches the FCC Part 95 page. It doesn't say anything about 25khz. And if you're LMR great isn't Part 95, then it technically isn't legal on GMRS but many LMR great is. Just depends on the model.

  • @mark12.31
    @mark12.31 4 роки тому +3

    Good overview. I do believe that the GMRS repeater frequencies and offsets follow a standard layout and are not just changeable on a whim - in other words, repeaters on GMRS will follow the standard input/output frequency pairs and then the tone is what is selectable/settable. I imagine, just guessing here, but I imagine that the software allows configuring some of the menu options and the tones for the channels (you can use CTCSS on simplex or repeater frequencies).
    Same thing happened to me on my GMRS license - it expired and I didn't realize it. For me, though, I did get something in the mail but it went to my PO Box because that is what is on my FRN info. I don't check the PO Box very often so I missed it; the notice only came a couple of weeks prior to the expiration date. Got a new callsign and all is well...

    The repeater channels are the same frequencies as channels 15 through 22 except they have a +5 MHz duplex offset. For example, when set to channel 15, the radio will rx and tx on 462.55. When set to channel RPT15 (which is called 15R or 23 on some radios) the radio will rx on the repeater output 462.55 and tx on the repeater input 467.55. 73 de N3TS/WRAT786

    The center simplex frequencies are low power and narrowband for both GMRS and FRS because the repeater inputs are between those frequencies. The repeater inputs are also not allowed to be use simplex for GMRS users. They are repeater inputs only with 15-22 being not only simplex but also repeater outputs.
    If you go back in to the frequency list on Wikipedia those 8 non FRS frequencies at the bottom are paired with 15-22 for "repeater pairs" So the first listed repeater input frequency is paired with 15, the 2nd with 16 and so on. All of the repeaters are setup for +5 offset.

    The software for this radio is ok and works well. But If you have a hamradio license, you can download a different software suite from Wouxun's website, and get the best of both worlds out of this radio. Put in your favorite GMRS channels-repeaters. Also, your favorite Hamradio simplex-repeaters on 70cm. Go to the Wouxun site and get the software for the KG-801E-703E. This will work on both the KG-805G & KG-805M radios. Disclaimer: If you are not a licensed Ham Radio Operator, do not attempt this.
    For those that are not LIcensed Hams, the ability to access ALL 128 memories of the radio means you can program many different configurations of the MURS & GMRS channels. Very useful to access many more GMRS repeaters. This radio beats the Btech GMRS-V1 in that regard. The Btech GMRS-V1 locks you into the first 30 memories to set TX channels. Channels 31-128 are RX only. The KG-805G allows all 128 memories to contain valid RX/TX channels. Filling the radio with many GMRS repeaters with different CTCSS/DCS squelch options (legally).

    There are 23 menu options in this radio. Menu #17 allows for one of three things to be assigned to the programmable PF1 function key. One of those things is the ability to receive the FM broadcast band which is the default setting. I have discovered that you can set this radio to whichever GMRS frequency you prefer to monitor, then enable FM broadcast reception. While you are listening to FM broadcast stations the radio continues to monitor your chosen GMRS channel and when activity occurs the GMRS will automatically override the FM broadcast station. After activity ceases it reverts back to FM broadcast automatically. I have also discovered that while listening to FM stations you can tap the A/B button and the radio will search forward for new stations. The green RECEIVE LED flickers rapidly while it's searching for new stations.

    Link is screwy. Says discontinued but says replaced by the same model number with a higher price. It sure is a lot nicer quality than the cheap Midland GMRS HT radios I have. $80 is a lot of money to pay for a single GMRS radio though.

      Thanks for pointing that out. Link is fixed. It depends on what kind of radio you are wanting - GMRS radios are usually better than an FRS radio and if you don't have a Ham license, this might be the best option.

      A GMRS license covers all your family members down to aunts/uncles and in-laws. I think it is worth the money for a 10yr license to be able to communicate.

    If you think this radio is cool, you will lose your SHTF over the new KG-UV9G (Google it), coming in a couple months. :)

      I'm going to be using this radio for communications while snowboarding this year. Might be doing a bit more backcountry compared to resort riding due to covid19. This radio does have it's place. I was leaning towards a couple of these with a UVD9P for myself but it might not have the durability I require. Ill be getting my GMRS license when the season starts and may soon move up to my ham license to setup a (HT) repeater to leave in my car. Thanks for video! It helped in my decision quite a bit.
