BTech GMRS 50X1 VS Wouxun KG-1000G - GMRS Mobile Radio Shootout - Which GMRS Radio Is Better?

  • I compare the Wouxun KG-1000G to the BTech GMRS 50X1 GMRS radio. Both of these mobile GMRS radios output 50 watts, but which is better? The BTech GMRS radio for $220 or the Wouxun GMRS mobile radio for $320?

    I am a "Know it all, been there done that" general class ham operator. Whoopie for me.. Seriously, i got my ham ticket 2 years ago and just got my GMRS License this week. I enjoy your informative videos, as they, along with others help me to decide which mobile gmrs radios I choose for my vehicles. I have 2m/440 radios in my personal vehicle, but I'm the only ham operator in the family........then I discovered GMRS. Now my wife and adult children have mobiles/handhelds in all vehicles. We live in a rural area, and this helps greatly around the farm, camp, and even in the family's vacation "caravan". Keep up the good videos!

      I'm not against getting a HAM license, and I probably will end up down that rabbit hole "eventually", because why not. It does seem the logical progression, even though GMRS suits most of my "practical" needs. But HAM seems like it will be more for my impractical needs. But *sigh* so many silly questions to push a PTT button. Soooo many questions. I like how GMRS fits in between FRS and HAM. GMRS is more accessible than HAM, since there's no exam. They chose to make HAM inaccessible to "normal" mortals for some reason, so there you go. The process is one predisposed to CREATING sad hams, and it will end up attracting only hobbyists and hard-core radio enthusiasts. And pretty much every conversation over HAM will be about HAM topics, and HAM equipment. Yes, there's the tendency for that on GMRS to, at times. And I have heard HAM-related conversations over GMRS. With GMRS you can use repeaters (which makes it head and shoulders above FRS). And there is only a MILD barrier to entry (the FCC web-site) which is probably not quite as bad as a HAM exam, but was a bit confusing (not very intuitive compared to most online applications).

    One more decision point -- the CHIRP programming software supported by BTECH works for both the GMRS-50X1 and all the Baofeng handheld radios, so it's very easy to make them interoperable by having the same channel/code setups in the same slots. With the programming cables and a one-minutes download time, it's feasible to give everyone in your group identical and compatible channel setups. We also typically use the dual monitoring capability to have both a simplex channel and a repeater channel monitored, so everyone can receive someone else in the group regardless of which they choose to transmit on.
    Excellent video, BTW. I've learned a lot from what you've shared, and watch for your new content. 😊

    Another nice feature of the KG-1000G is that 2 of them can be connected to create a repeater, if you should ever decide to run your own. Be careful though, this might bring you closer to being 'ham-like'.

    My KG1000 finally arrived in the mail and it is installed. It works well. I was not sure if I needed the dual monitor but am now glad I have it. You had mentioned to order it (they charge ones' card), and be patient and I would concur. It took me about two months for the unit to arrive. Of course, over 60 ships sitting outside of San Pedro and LA Harbor waiting to offload. Thank you, again, for the information on the KG1000. Enjoy your holiday week!

    This review is definitely top tier. I'm still undecided because i love chirp and its ease of use. I wish they could fuse these. I think having both licenses is good but in my area the ham 2 meter and 70cm is dead compared to gmrs. GMRS though is community supported unlike Ham. Also in GA 14 repeaters are all linked unlike ham i believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. I love the radio community and is a great hobby. Have a blessed day. Im clear on you guys final. 😎

    Just ordered the KG-805G today, and in time will order the KG-1000G. Watched a video previous to this from Buy Two Way Radios, and if you have the funds, you can hook 2 of the KG-1000G's together and make your own repeater, pretty cool. I also have 2 BaoFeng HT's, and a Vero VN-7500 mobile for the truck. Nothing wrong with having Chinese equipment, it gets the job done. Keep the videos coming, I really like the humor you add in.

    While yes, those radios both have 10w more power than Midland's highest power radio, it is worth mentioning that the extra ten watts will not give the additional range most people would think it will give them. One would be better off investing their time and money in an optimized antenna set up than trying to get the extra range from 10w of additional power. The 10w helps, but a good antenna helps more.
    (10x the power usually equates to 2x the range)

      Or better antenna and 50w!

    • @USAFJUNKIE
      @USAFJUNKIE 3 роки тому +1

      @@Lord_Stinkfoot yes, that would be ideal. My point was simply that the extra 10w might give someone a few extra miles to a repeater or over open terrain, not dozens more.

      I saw your comment on having a repeater, and have made a video on an inexpensive build for a weather-tight, solar-powered GMRS repeater. It's based around a type-approved Retevis RT97, which could meet your needs, depending on antenna height and line-of-sight considerations in your area. You can find the video on my channel, if you care to look for it.
      We use it for our own group very similar to yours, and it covers a similar area to what you described. It would also be ideal for a communications hub for off-road groups, or for group camping.

    Four days after receiving my GMRS license in the beginning of June 2022, I received a letter from a Ham with a pamphlet telling me why I should get my ham license. I don't want one. I am thinking of sending a slice of ham in the mail back to him. It was honestly kind of creepy that someone was watching the GMRS license list, and immediately mailing someone new.

      It showed out of stock yesterday. Last night I went ahead and placed an order anyway. Today I already received a shipping number and it shipped. Their website still shows back ordered on the radio if you click on. I would suggest just order it anyway no matter what it shows. Evidently they have them or get them in regularly and if you already have an order in it ships. I was very surprised it shipped the next day even though the website still shows back ordered.

    Dang, I'm pretty sure you could pass the Tech Ham test, superheterodyne is a big word LOL! :) I agree (you needed that for your channel) having a detachable face plate is a big deal in a vehicle, just velcro that puppy to a blank spot on the dash or console. I don't care for ceiling mounts because the mic cord slaps you in the face turning corners or doing fun tricks with mom. If intoxicated it can be a choking hazard too. The super Het receiver is a very practical upgrade for sure. It sounds 'techie' to talk about superheterodyne recievers in a conversation, but the only thing you need to know is that it delivers better receive range and better overall sound.
    I chose the Wouxun GMRS HT's mainly for this reason.
    Learning about the remote faceplate option on KG-1000G totally eliminated the Btech unit for me.

      I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on a KG-1000G now that I will have a proper base antenna going up today. Still going to try it out with a hand-held first (version 1.0 of the antenna I put up was terrible but I think version 2.0 should be great). Version 2.0 is a 450-470 MHz only antenna, not a dual band. I tried putting up a dual-band VHF/UHF magnetic antenna (yes I used a very adequate metal ground plane (and minimal length coax, just enough to reach where I was standing under the antenna mast) - I stuck a mobile magnetic antenna to a pizza pan and raised the antenna to over 20 feet in the air but all I was pushing out was static. Reception seemed great, but transmit was total garbage. I could not even open a repeater that my ducky antenna always opens standing on the deck 12 feet beneath that. *Sigh*. So I guess altitude does not make up for a bad choice of antenna.

    Appreciate the great videos. Very informative and convinced me to jump into a KG-1000. Don’t have it yet but excited. What I don’t know is what antenna I should pick that would utilize everything the KG-1000 can do. I don’t have a Jeep but instead a 91 K5 that I try and keep up with the Jeep’s out here in Michigan. Do U have what I should be looking for in an antenna for the KG-1000? I know u like the browning but does it pair perfectly with the KG-1000 since it just came out. If u had to buy a new GMRS antenna for your KG-1000 what antenna would you pick and why? Okay too many questions. :) u obviously know what ur doing and I respect your knowledge. U know WAY more than I do since I’m very much a newbie

      Any "GMRS" antenna will do fine. The Browning is "UHF" and not GMRS specific meaning it must be cut/tuned for GMRS frequencies which is a hassle - but when I got mine no GMRS antennas were shipping (quickly enough)..

    I’m a ham and gmrs license holder. I’m a happy ham. Do you see gmrs eventually becoming popular among the truckers?

    Great review, I have the 50X1 in my truck as I have a high end digital scanner as well. The 50X1 performs very well for it's price and has a lot of features, and I haven't noticed any issues using the SOC chip. I may decide to upgrade to the Wouxun for my other car down the road. Keep the funny HAM comments coming and the four letter words $#%@@@ lol

    You keep bringing up squelch issues with the BTech radios. Have you tried modifying the squelch settings in chirp. Once I did that, squelch seems to work great!

    • @TheNotaRubicon
      @TheNotaRubicon  2 роки тому +1

      Yes - on several different radios - it never made any noticeable difference.

    • @lokisullivan469

      @@TheNotaRubicon I set squelch from 0 to 90, but I agree 90 is still low.

    The 40 watt midland will not give significantly less performance then 50 watts, but the two discussed here appear to have better features. The TYT 9800 is much nicer then all of these, but is not especially legal on GMRS. Note however there are zero instances of citations by FCC for using non-certified equipment on GMRS where the service was used for its intended purposes. Going this route sets you up if you want to get a HAM license at some point in the future.

    What mobile antenna would you recommend for the Wouxun 1000g installed in a 2020 Jeep gladiator to take advantage of receiving all the bands the wouxun is capable of receiving along with transmitting over the GMRS frequencies???

    I would use my second receiver channel to look for a clear GMRS channel If my wife is on one channel but it is occupied, so I would find an empty channel on the B group and then go back to the A side and let her know to what channel to QSY.
