The reality of it is this..... even if he was never able to remove the extractor, replacing it would have still been way cheaper than that repair otherwise
I’ve never used one so I asked because I thought it would be hard since it dug itself into the bolt essentially. Usually I break bolts trying to get them out so I have no use for this tool
Yeah when it hits that point you either start swearing or give it another half turn and let it be the next guys problem, and pray the next guy isnt you (always is though)
God video love the way you use xtractors no mercy as it shoud ,It is in very god condition but definitely not good as new ,and yes they are buit to take a lot of abuse
Probably won’t use it a lot, but it can definitely be a lifesaver. Let’s put it this way, you’ll never regret buying extractors (unless they’re cheap and break easy)
Frankly Im surprised the extractor didnt shatter. Ive had both Snap on and Matco extractors just explode when I tried to use my impact gun to remove them.
I'm assuming its because an impact gun uses its hammer mechanism to turn the extractor, while this setup relies on punching the extractor in. The only rotational force applied here comes from the person so its not enough to shatter the extractor.
@@JesseSeg84they’re the same exact extractor. All manufactured by Irwin/Hanson. You can get those same extractors all under the Icon, Snap On, Matco name and more.
@@kinglkd5102That’s because they try to make them look like their snap on counterparts. Not made in the same factory but there’s still nothing wrong with icon tools.
If you want a vice setup that won't budge as you use it . Look into an old peg leg vise and build a roll around base for it. I've made 2 for different purposes (1 I use to mount and build rear ends and differentials) and the other for on site repair that's a lot larger.
I’m so thankful I went to icon for either my first or second set of tools. Lifetime and it’s been five years with me not using it a single time. And for like a tenth of the price of tool truck brands. Also so thankful for dewalt/Milwaukee for exactly the same and always having some crazy good deal going.
those extractors are great. Used one to save me from redoing the shower tile when the renter broke the shower arm off at the threads. The piping was a non-secured setup (found out after). I only had 1/4 inch gap between pipe and hole in the tile. Had to use a metal coat hanger to hold onto the pipe from the backside through the hole so I could actually drive the extractor threads in.
I have to say, everything you've done in this video is a solidly pro move, I've had to use my extractor set a few times and watching this video just added like, 5 new tools to my mental tool box 😂
i snapped one of them exact icon extractors off into my cylinder head trying to get an exhaust stud out. glad yours worked lmao. the extractors are very very hard, and only came out via welder with nut.
That’s a mercruiser bell housing pivot bolt. There’s a special tool to remove it which is readily available, and won’t destroy the bolt head like that extractor. I’ve removed countless pivot bolts with it.
Aaah! Now I know!! I was the one who asked to see the extraction. I gotta say it was awesome!! But Now I have another request, Can the extraction be done by common hand tools? Most people would either have an impact or just use hand tools not many people would have air tools. It would be great to see the extraction by common hand tools and an impact or a drill driver. Cheers! ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah I think it would be pretty easy to get out by hand but the impact looked cooler on camera. 😉Also, using an impact is a little easier because the bolt is less likely to turn inthe vice.
As someone who spent a lot of time using bolt extractors with just hand tools and a cordless drill, it's usually not TOO bad. A crescent wrench and vice grips go a long way
Just use a pipe wrench to hold the bolt and leverage against the ground when you put a wrench or breaker bar, what have you onthe extractor. Not really an issue. People confuse me.
Nice, my extractor set have round sockets so the vice doesn’t grab it anywhere near as well (cheapest set I could find) I didn’t notice that yours have a hex in the last vid
If you get a stripped bolt out using an extractor....mission accomplished. If you have to, through them both out. All I really care about is getting the bolt out, I'll buy a new extractor if I have to.
This video made me elated. I popped a bone hammer. And I have not a dam clue / would never likely know what is going on other than he has a drill, extractor, and left handed bolt. Subscribed.
Just put a nut in the vice. If you think about it for a second, backing the bolt out of a nut, drives the extractor in. So if you hold a nut in the vice, or even hold it with a wrench, and TIGHTEN the thread into the nut, it will back the extractor out. And you don't have to stress your vice because it easily grips the nut.
All of this was great and all.... but if you had just heated up the hinge pin to begin with and melted the red locktite on the threads of the hingepin, the regular tool would have worked just fine. I've done 100s of hingepins, and I've always got them out after heating them up. Granted, some are harder than others.... but heat is your friend
Ya know that mercury marine makes a hinge pin tool for that and you are supposed to apply a light amount of heat because they are loctite in plus you just messed up your bell by ripping the threads off of it
that was a new hinge pin bolt.. wasn't stuck.. doesn't really affect this demo.. the extractor did it job and would be effective on a real stuck bolt.. would have been a better demonstration had you removed a real stuck 20 year old pin bolt, vs a new replacement one you had just placed there.. might have taken a while longer.. help to add heat on the old crusty ones..
The bolt is wrecked.... so yep it has an extracted stuck into it but why didn't you grind flats on the threaded section so when you put it in the vice it is easier to hold, requires less force to tighten and will have substantially higher resistance to slipping... don't make life harder in yourself if you don't have to!
Would spraying some penetrant, wrapping it in a paper towel or two, and putting it in the freezer for a bit not be an option for removal? Obviously your method was successful. Just curious 🤔
It chews its way out just like it chews its way in. I don't know why anyone thought it was going to be hard to remove.
Exactly
My dumbass forgot that vices exist

I usually just lay it sideways on a table and give the side of the head of the bolt a few light taps, and the extractor falls right out.
That is the newest 'old bolt' I've ever seen.
The outer rim of the bolt Did not look remotely shiny when it was in. When he took it out it was shiny as hell. Done in 2 takes. Not suspect at all.
Hardness of the bolt is probably also a joke.

Grind flats on the bolt and you won't have to abuse your vise with full body weight to keep the bolt from spinning.
