Pendragon Cycle by Stephen Lawhead is a Celtic take (the love triangle is a weird rumor barely mentioned to only say it is a rumor as Gwenever truly loves Arthur). And she is not a damsel in distress.
I read in an interview with Juliet Marillier that she really loves Arthurian Legends and wanted to do a retelling, but felt there were too many out there when she came across the history of Bridei and his druid mentor and it reminded her a lot of Arthur and Merlin and so The Dark Mirror became her answer to a King Arthur retelling.
I love Arthurian retellings. My favourites are Lancelot and Camelot by Giles Kristian, The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell and I'm currently reading The Story of Silence with would be an adjacent retelling. Sistersong and The Lost Queen are both favourite reads with Juliet Marillier being a favourite author of mine :)
I want to read The Winter King and I’ve heard good things about Lancelot, maybe I’ll try it. They might be a little more focused on Arthur/Lancelot than I usually go for but I might give it a shot! I forgot about the story of silence!
Im on my 3rd Morgan le Fay book. Started with Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, then I read I am Morgan Le Fay by Nancy Springer, now Im reading Daughter of Tintagel by Fay Sampson which is an omnibus of tellings of morgans life from different perspectives. Interesting because they all take from different versions of Morgan but also similar ones as well. All really good honestly. Gunna hit up JRR Tolkiens retelling of Gawain and the Green Knight next.
Oooh I neeeded this video! I always wanted to dive into the Arthurian legend since it was not part of our curriculum in school, but sadly I never did. Weird, because I think I would really like it, especially the ~magical vibes~ For absolute beginners who know nothing about the legend (or who know only the old Disney animated film, like me :D), would you suggest to start with The Once and Future King to get to know the main characters?
For these retellings I don’t think you need to know too much about the legends to enjoy them. Especially since they are looser retellings. I found The Once and Future King a tough place to start. I think Sam from Sam’s Cozy Corner did a video a few years ago about where to start with Arthurian retellings and she’s more well versed in them than I am so might be a good one to check out!
oooh wait I didn't know Sistersong was loosely connected like that! unless you mentioned it to me and I forgot 😂 I think the only Arthur retelling I've read that's not the T.H. White one (which I didn't even like lol) is The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White. I really enjoyed the first two books but refuse to read the third, and I don't think you'd enjoy the series so....this is actually not a recommendation, I guess 😂😂😂

I hadn’t heard that! Well that makes a lot of sense haha!

@@badgerreads Oh wow what a great channel rec - I immediatly binged a few videos! I'm curious where my path to the arthurian legends will take me 😁
The Lost Queen and Sistersong are 2 of my all-time favorite books 😍. The other 3 are now on my TBR for sure!
I hope you like them!!
I'm currently reading Spear because of your earlier review and really enjoying it. I'd recommend The King's Damosel by Vera Chapman
So glad you’re liking Spear!
I haven’t heard of The King’s Damsel, I’ll look it up!

Thanks for the warning haha! From what I know I don’t think I’d like the Guinevere Deception either
you need to check out " Arthur of the Gododdin " , none of the French and Lancelot stuff in it , no love triangle , take care , Mike
No love triangle? Intriguing
@@badgerreads and Mordred is a hero
