    I find the Heartstopper book cover to be odd. They look like men playing at being little boys...and that is creepy..not cute. I know the books are popular..but I find that cover problematic.

    Always wonderful to check in with you! Yay for doing so well with the sci-fi goals, just take that win and forget the rest hahaha. Also, I love how you just set yourself up for guaranteed success with that loose reading goal of 20-80 books 🤣 I personally love The Bone Ships, so I hope it works better for you on re-read. It definitely requires some trust and patience in the first half! Happy reading 🥰

    I have started Child of the Prophecy (for the first time) sometime in April, as I usually save Juliet Marillier books for spring, have read about third of it and then had to put it down because I came upon that very detailed SA/borderline SA scene (and lets not even mention the age discrepancy 😳) and I am not sure whether I can get through it. I don't understand why Marillier chooses to depict SA scenes in such detail, while in comparison, her steamy scenes between loving couples are bare bones 😶 Also, since you rereading that series, I wanted to ask - is Fainne's childhood friend really the main love interest? He's really condescending towards her as well as possessive _and_ he's basically slut-shaming her quite often 🤬Is that really the guy she ends up with? 😨

    • @badgerreads
      @badgerreads 5 днів тому

      Tbh I haven’t read it in about 6 years so I don’t have a lot of detail to offer at the moment. In general I think the way she writes SA vs steamy scenes is somewhat a product of the time she was writing, and more recently she has said (I can’t remember if it was an ama or an interview) if she were writing Sevenwaters again, she would probably handle those scenes differently. And you can see in her more recent works she does handle SA differently and less graphically. But of course it will depend for each person if they are comfortable reading that

  • @thijsbos
    @thijsbos 20 днів тому

    Setting them all in the same world and fleshing out the world would undo the fairy tale vibe though. Sometimes you need things misty and only spot things vaguely. It's okay for not every book to have hard world building and magic

    • @thijsbos
      @thijsbos 20 днів тому

      You have the same with characterisation. I found a lot is there, but it's in between the line and not spelled out. It's a trick a lot of authors these days are missing, they want to spell it out because they think readers are stupid and create unnecessary doorstoppers along the way

  • @flowerpixel
    @flowerpixel Місяць тому

    Nice to see a spoiler review on UA-cam. I actually enjoyed the restrained romance and red. I understood the brothers behavior even though it was annoying. And red's mother, i understand her being suspicious of sorcha. I agree, i personally rate it 5 stars but technically it's in the 4 range bc the pacing is weird. But i was disappointed with Richard. He felt like a cartoon character villain. At one point in jail he was literally filing his nails! I think a more complicated or even grey villain would've been better.

    • @badgerreads
      @badgerreads 4 дні тому

      Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, Richard was a little two-dimensional as a villain. It didn't bother me but I see what you mean

However, I found that the app seems to no longer be available for download. Thank you, and I look forward to your reply.

    I gave it 4 stars too, mainly because there were some scenes where Caitrin was kind of dumb that drove me nuts. I love anulan. I feel like beauty and the beast retelling is a market gimmick bc of acotar BUT ewoyn Ivey has a retelling coming out in 2025 that I will totally read bc I just love her writing. I think you make a good point, it's almost like a euphemism for Stockholm syndrome themes

    • @badgerreads

      There are a LOT of beauty and the beast retellings. Although Heart's Blood came out before ACOTAR

  • @MissBookiverse
    @MissBookiverse 2 місяці тому

    I totally get your point about the pacing but I thought that while it was frustrating to know what had happened at Withywoods and having to wait for Fitz to figure it out, it also created a lot of tension for me, because I really wanted him to finally get to that point and react to it. I also thought it was smart to almost make him catch up with her and the Servants (because at first I expected him to get all the way to their island and that being the plot of this book) only just to miss them (and then not being able to follow them because he had dulled his Skill for good reason). But then again, I’m not the biggest fan of Bee and love following Fitz around 😅 Your comment on what the point of this trilogy is made me think though. It’s a good question and I hope we get more payoff in book 3 (haven’t read it yet), there are some hints in the world building that could lead to something interesting, such as The Six Duchies being overwhelmed by the Dragons, the connection between Dragon blood/silver/the Skill and maybe between the Servants and the Others? Because don’t both of these groups use dragon/serpent parts to catch glimpses of the future? Looking forward to the last book and things to hopefully come full circle but I also don’t want it to be over 😢

    I read the two first series as a child and loved them to bits, but I didn't read Protector of the Small till I was an adult and I just clicked with it immediately. I just love Kel so much and I return to that series often when life gets tough. There's something about Keladry"s stoicism and determination in face of adversity that I just so admire, as well as her principles and, as you said, self reflection. Ahh, it encourages me to be a better person also. There's something about the way she goes "well, this sucks, but I'm going to do it anyway" that's so inspiring. And I love that she doesn't have magic. Completely opposite of how I'd have felt as a child.

    I really disliked this book on a reread, so many problems, her brothers annoyed me very much and red was creepy, the way he wasn't on the first read. like he was waiting around, salivating over this poor girl who he knows experienced such a trauma. and I was bored. the first time I was really expecting her love story to be with simon so i paid little attention to red for the longest time :)

    • @badgerreads
      @badgerreads 3 місяці тому

      I loved the brothers but I did find them frustrating at the end when some of them didn't adapt to how things have changed. Especially the older brothers were very stuck in their mindset. Personally I would not consider Red's behavior at all "salivating" over Sorcha. I think he was very restrained, maybe to the detriment of developing romantic tension in the story. And overall he was very respectful of her boundaries. TBH every time I read it, I immediately forget about Simon the moment he is gone. I never found his character very interesting and never felt a romantic connection between them. I don't think he would have been right for Sorcha. But to each their own :)

    I'm reading, well finishing actually, a book that might appeal to you. It is cosy fantasy about a sorcerers' library librarian who runs away with many books from that library in order to save them from the fire ignited by revolutionaries. She arrives to her childhood home in a remote island where all kinds of people dwell and she starts a jam shop at her late parents' cottage, but her side business is selling spells to heal trees, merhorses, mermaids, fountains and crops. I can't reveal more, the title is "The Spellshop" and it comes out in the UK next July11th (I'm reading an ARC) I can't wait to read the next installment of Shauna Lawless' "Gael Song", please read the novellas when you can!

    Sounds like we had the exact same experience with the First Sister series, I had similar quibbles but also loved it a lot as a whole. And ooooh that romance series is going straight onto my TBR, I have been wanting to try a more sporty romance for a while now and this sounds like the perfect gateway!! 🤩 It's been a while, but the first quarter was quite odd for me. Normally I read 80% (dark) fantasy, but now it was all cozy fantasy, romantasy and just romcoms, which I loved! Some of my favourites of the first quarter were A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows, Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross, The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna, A Love Song for Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams, Breeze Spells & Bridegrooms by Sarah Wallace and S.O. Callahan, and Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver! 🥰
