Not sure I completely agree with this. After almost a decade years of GPU rendering I have switched back to CPU. I had been using Octane for going on 10 years - since way back when they were still with Chaos group. I was a die hard GPU render junkie and fondly remember building my first my first multi GPU 780ti setup back in 2013. For about 7 years I was all in with Octane for most of my work. I remember dragging some of my agency clients kicking and screaming into GPU rendering before GPU rendering had really matured with easy to implement AOV's and other tools necessary for a proper workflow. Then came Redshift and for the next 5 years I switched mostly to Redshift because Octane was a screaming crashfest the majority of the time and Redshift was so much faster at rendering clean volumes and specular materials even if it took a little more work to get the type of IQ that Octane had out of the box.
So what happened? Well I had one job about 3 years ago doing VFX for a feature film and had to use Arnold Render. My instant reaction was ... oh gross a CPU renderer. But after 1 day and seeing how speedy the IPR was and how absolutely gorgeous the renders were and how stupid simple it is to get CG to match real life lighting over a backplate I was hooked. You may be saying to yourself, well Jordan you indefatigable bastion of opiniated viewpoints, isn't Arnold also GPU capable and you'd be right but at this point Arnolds GPU renderer hasn't reached full CPU parity and is still missing some important features, trace-sets being an important one. That said I have been so impressed with the final frame quality of Arnolds CPU renderer that it has cause me to think in new terms about how to optimize to get Arnolds insane quality while also getting render times that are not crippling to a small company like mine. So last year I took the plunge fully and sold the 8 total 4090's I had and started building these little sub $1000 render nodes that all use Intel's 24 core i9 13900 CPU's. I have built a total of 8 and find that each node with its own 450w PSU is the cost, power draw and render speed equivalent of roughly a 3070-3090ti on an optimized Arnold scene. Big bonus is that I never go out of core, heat management is a lot less of an issue keeping my studio from turning into an oven and I get the production proven quality render that has been used to do some of the biggest VFX heavy films to date.
I think GPU rendering is great and for years was a huge advocate when people didn't take it seriously at all. I have however changed my mind about CPU rendering. I realize that at a certain point GPU rendering will be the defacto standard but on big productions, or jobs with huge data sets or where you need the absolute best quality it's hard to argue with the results a render engine like Arnold can provide.

I would love to have you on to chat about this if you would like. I would love to chat and hear about your experience in the VFX world as well as what CPU can do that GPU can't etc!

@@AwesomeBlackDudequite honestly it’s been a goal of mine to start a UA-cam channel for a really long time I just haven’t had any free bandwidth since I started working in the industry.
I was pretty fortunate early in my career as I was just starting to get comfortable with Houdini to have met a guy in the gym of all places who happened to be the west coast president of TV production at an agency. He gave me a shot on a very small job sight unseen as I didn’t have much of a portfolio at that time.
Lucky enough, they liked the work on that job and I got more of it. Between them keeping me busy / and word of mouth it allowed me to pick up enough gigs in some TV/ commercial advertising that I never really needed to build a reel.
That was over 15 years ago. It’s been a blessing it also limited me. Because I just sorta just landed on my feet and got comfortable in just one part of the industry. Because of that my portfolio isn’t as diverse as I would like it to be.
It’s only recently that I started putting together a reel. I have a number of jobs I’m reasonably proud of that need to be collected and sorted for a reel. I keep telling myself that when I have some downtime I’m going to get on it.
About that downtime tho - my wife and I are first time parents to a baby boy who is 18 months old which has been an absolute trip. We also have another on the way. Between my jobs, being a new dad and the fact that we sold our house 3 years ago Orange County CA and moved outside of the city to where we have now have 3 horses, 4 mini goats, 2 mini pigs and what’s has become more than 100 chickens on our little ranch… well … so much of my day is spoken for right ATM. I’m really going to try in 2024 to make some adjustments that will allow me to pursue some other goals though…
