  • Let's get started on this Polo Coupe restoration. First thing is to get the car stripped to a shell, get it mounted onto the rollover jig and see how much more rust there is under the car.

    Welding…
    Off up the garage to do some in a short while. ‘Dragging on’ seems to be a theme at ‘this end’.. not long to go though.
    Looking forwards to seeing those panels getting out in (even in time lapse) don’t underestimate your skills/problem solving and how much your subbies enjoy watching/gain from doing so. It all adds up.
    Impressed with the multi tool sealer removal I have just gotten by using a big conical wire wheel on a large grinder. It’s brutal and gives you a pretty good work out. I may now have an excuse to buy one of this multi tool things now.

    20 years ago at a Scottish club gti event at kames track there was a red mk3 polo with a 1.6 16v engine on ITB`S.
    I think from an early polo gti or maybe lupo, it was the quickest around the track that day and everyone was amazed at how quick it was .
    When he lifted the bonnet there were hoards of people around it looking.
    There were loads of fast cars that day MK1 20V, golf rallyes etc.
    But for me the car of the show was Paul Horrocks from Yorks black ratty mk2 vr6 with 6 speed vw motor sport gearbox and schrick inlet manifold,
    I remember it had a dented door from him kicking it when he was building it because it wouldnt start i think lolo
    It was proper ratty and fast and the vr singing was great to hear, I think he was 3rd that day i think.
    I had a great talk with Bill Brockbank of badger 5 fame about his silver mk2 jetta with 2.0 16v. Hes a lovely guy and his wife is lovely as well, I think he was 2nd round the circuit.
    Im almost certain the boy with the red polo stuck a rear ARB from a Porsche on the back of his polo aswell.
    Polo ua-cam.com/video/7Cksl4C6txQ/v-deo.html
    Build thread, alot of pics gone unfortunately but there might be some info on the install that might help.
    www.clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/dogwoods-polo.157429/
    1.6 16v engine is 123 HP standard , there must be a cam for them now after all this time, maybe 2nd hand ? that and correct bike carbs and a 4 branch etc it would be a handfull with the polo being the same weight as a fag packet 👍
    Lot # 42152063 sell the rest and get the engine cheap cheap, you know the deal 😎
    You know it makes sense, get it did allready 🤣🤣
    Peace.

    Had loads of these over the years, broke loads of them for parts too. Many say the 1.4 16v engine is the way to go, but the small block 1.6 engines from the Mk3 Golf and Skoda Felicia go well with a few tweeks and are generally cheaper.

    Hi Dan what a fantastic episode mate it's really nice to see you finally working on a car in your new shop rather than building said shop, it must be a huge buzz to be using everything you have built and it looks like it's working as it should👏
    I've never owned a VW I was always a Cortina man when I was younger, think I owned about 4 or 5 of them back in the 70's and 80's but I have travelled to work in a mates Golf and I really liked it, anyway mate you are progressing really well with the Polo but please don't rush it to much or you will burn out and loose interest making it a chore rather than a pleasure to do, the old Polo isn't in to bad condition for it's age so I'm sure you will get it done, IMO you should get a nice big V8 and stick it in the back then 4 wheel drive it then make the old engine bay the boot👌🤣just kidding but it would go like a rocket😅👍

  • @paulcushnie

    Dan you are doing it the right way with saving the rear quarters as the ones you got are for the mk2f so different rear lights also slightly more round than your mk2 which is more crisp lines. I had the mk2f gt great car one thing is watch your seat choice with the 5 speed. I had a set of tartan recaro mk2 scirocco seats in mine and it looked great but If you set the seat to far forward on the runner you lost 5th gear

    Shared a polo coupe with my mum as my first car back in the mid 90's. Managed to pick a g40 up a few years back which I still have today, makes me laugh every time I drive it!!! I would say if you can find the parts it's well worth fitting bigger brakes from a 16v Scirocco, makes a world of difference! Lupo GTi engine would make sense.

    • @paulcushnie
      @paulcushnie Рік тому

      Jay it's the 16v mk2 golf brakes you need with a passat b4 or 5 servo. There was only 10 official 16v mk2 scirocco imported to the UK.

    • @jayperry3599
      @jayperry3599 Рік тому

      @@paulcushnie yeah sorry, I know it's the golf 16v discs and calipers but was pretty sure you needed the carriers from the 16v Scirocco or certain Audi 80's,(same part no?) as they have a smaller bolt spacing where they bolt on to the polo leg. Are the bolt spaces 75mm on the polo leg but 90mm on the golf, can't remember exactly. It's been a while since I did it! I swapped the master cylinder for golf 16v but wasn't aware of the servo swap! Not sure if a bigger one would fit on the g40 or not but might have to have a look, every little helps! I'm sure the left hand drive cars were fitted with a bigger one from the factory.

    • @paulcushnie
      @paulcushnie Рік тому

      Trying to mind the conversations myself. I upped my mk2 scirocco brakes cause they were awful but when I had my mk2f polo I just left the brakes as standard. Problem will be that guess since we are both trying to remember we are from a time that all these parts were available at local scrap yards now they are sought after parts and harder to find. I guess the new upgrade would be to use the lupo gti brake and discs and hubs and find a coil over that will suit the crossover

      @@paulcushnie yeah back in the day when you could actually walk round a scrap yard on a Saturday morning even though the cars were stacked 5 high on bits of old pallets and spare wheels!! Looking for the hidden gems and you could get pretty much anything off with a set of 8-19mm spanners and a big flat blade!!

    You should use dry ice to clean the underbody.

      Unfortunately that would wipe out a massive chunk of the budget and it would only remove dirt. It wouldn't remove the underseal
